From Library Journal

James Bond is one of the few characters who has enjoyed a loyal following in print and on the silver screen for over 30 years, a feat rivaled perhaps only by the Star Trek crew. He has endured through several authors and a slew of suave British actors?even James Bond-lite Roger Moore couldn't detract from the super secret agent's popularity. Bond also has the distinction of being one of the few action heroes who with equal vigor has attracted men, who fantasize about being him, and women, who fantasize about being with him. Rubin here offers an A-Z listing of everything you always wanted to know about James Bond films but were afraid to ask. Beyond merely stating the facts, he also punctuates the listings with his own commentary on characters, actors, bits of trivia, etc. The text is further buttressed with hundreds of black-and-white stills. In sum, this is a rich resource for all Bond fans who will be both shaken and stirred by the multitude of factoids and photos. Recommended.?Michael Rogers, "Library Journal"Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

What can I say... If you are into 007 you must have this book. Alphabetical listing of all kinds of James Bond trivia, plus a lot of photos. A new addendum has info on the first Brosnan 007 film. An updated edition would be nice.I still think Moore is the best Bond of them all. The classic British gentleman...

My main beef with this encyclopedia is the ratings that Rubin gives the movies. I COMPLETELY disagree with him on how he rated each film. His rationale is also inconsistent to put it mildly. A few of my issues with his ratings include: "License to Kill" only got 2.5 stars. Give me a break! Dalton was incredible in that movie! It was bold, took Bond on a different road---revenge! He went rogue, plenty of plot twists, Robert Davi was superb, and it was intense. That movie deserved 3.5 stars bare minimum! He gives "the Man with the Golden Gun" one star. Come on! It wasn't one of the best films by far, but it wasn't THAT bad! He pokes fun at Roger Moore's Bond and gives most of Moore's films super low scores. He blasts them for not being very serious, that there are too many goofy gadgets and silly moments....AND YET Rubin lauds the "Spy Who Loved Me" as this masterpiece? Spy Who Loved Me had Bond in a Lotus Esprit that turns into a submarine, Bond coming out of the ocean in the car onto a beach dumping a fish out of his car, the plot was basically a rehash of You Only Live Twice only under water, Jaws survives having an Egyptian temple falling on him, falls off a cliff into a house and lives, and defeats a Great White Shark, and Bond is as goofy as ever in that movie and yet Rubin acts like this is Moore's magnum opus? He also really rips into a film I think is pure garbage---"Never Say Never Again." He rips it, AND YET he gives is a high rating? Why? Just because Sean Connery was in it....sigh. The book is fairly informative, but ignore his ratings.

The James Bond Encyclopedia is what it claimed to be, an Encyclopedia of the James Bond films, which featured entries from Dr. No all the way to Licence to Kill, as well as Casino Royale (both the original and the spoof) and Never Say Never Again. A later edition included a preview chapter on GoldenEye.As fascinating as reading the entries, some get a little bit repetitive. For instance, when you look up a characer's entry, and then to the entry of the actor who played him, you pretty much get the same info. Rarely do you get some background info on the actor in question. And Steven Jay Rubin wasted no time trashing three of Roger Moore's movies. Especially A View To A KIll.So Christopher Walken's Zorin is bland and stupid. Okay, so back it up with some facts. Grace Jones was said to be too androgynous for mainstream audiences. Perhaps his idea of mainstream is back in the 1960s, which he is seem to be stuck in.He also said that no one care about the plot because no one care about Silicon Valley, and the film dosesn't explain why Zorin's monopoly on micochips will be so dangerous to the free world. Hello? Are we watching the same movie? As Stacey said, "He'll kill millions" with his man made earthquake; the danger does not lie in Zorin's monopoly, but in his plans to obtain it.That said, the Encyclopedia also ommitted any mention of Chrissie Hynde and the Prentenders and their two fabulous songs "If There Was A Man' and "Where Has Everybody Gone" for the Living Daylights....but he was sure to mention Phyllis Cornell, who was Tania Mallet's double in Goldfinger. It seems that if a James Bond Encyclopedia is to be written, it should be written by more than one person....and someone more objective.

We have, first of all, truth in advertising: Steven Jay Rubin's THE COMPLETE JAMES BOND MOVIE ENCYCLOPEDIA is exactly what it says it is, providing information on the series' actors, characters, locations and gadgets. It provides reviews of the first seventeen movies, and the history of the rift between Ian Fleming and Kevin McClory. There is a lot here. So much, in fact, that the book becomes wearisome. Mr. Rubin's entries about the various Bond searches are interesting, as are his reviews (and, no, I do not agree with half of them), but the quality of these are inferior to the same information presented in his much better THE JAMES BOND FILMS. In addition, Mr. Rubin has seen fit to include some trivia that may tickle the diehard fan but is fairly worthless otherwise.I was also annoyed by the GOLDENEYE updates. We get few stills from the movie, and the review doesn't provide much in the way of commentary.Still, if you are a diehard fan, or even a low key one, you'll find this book pleasing and often informative.

The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia is exactly what it says, a complete listing of many things that have been a part of the making of the the James Bond films from Dr. No to Goldneye, including the two versions of Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again. Packed full with a personal review of each film and a list of cast and credits. Many people who have been a part of the movies is included in the films. From Adams, Maud to Zorin, Max, the relentless information doesn't stop coming. You will learn about all the directors, producers, stars and everyone that is a part of the Bond Family. A very long read with everything in order, many fans will be amazed with the large length of this book. (one note: fans of Roger Moore, (like me) may not be pleased with the quite terrible reviews of 3 of his films.) Hey everyone has their own opinion. All in all a fantastic Bond book that every bond fan should own!

When I order this book I hope a very good Bond book with great pictures. But it was very disappointing. The all black and white pictures look old and some have bad quality. You may think that of course a picture form the movie Goldfinger must look old because it's a movie from the early sixties but, you know what I mean. I have seen pictures from Thunderball and other movies in full color and look spectacular but not in this book. And much of the info seems like "I don't care at all about this fact" Anyway, if you are a very big Bond fan, you should try this one, but if you don't, forget it immediately.
