On the positive side, this is an easy-to-read biography of one of the most significant figures in the history of exploration, who demonstrated an admirable drive and sense of integrity. Cook was clearly an unusual individual, and his accomplishments could be considered the greatest exploration in modern history.The book has a few weaknesses as well. The author gratuitously inserts himself into the narrative at times, so we are forced to endure a description of Dugard staring into the harbor at Newport, Rhode Island (where Cook's first exploration vessel was eventually sunk), and Dugard wandering through London in search of Cook's family home. Dugard is more of a journalist than a historian, and he seems to be one of his own favorite subjects. Dugard also fancies himself a skilled psychologist, claiming to understand Cook's psychological state at different points in his life with the sketchiest of supporting evidence. The latter parts of the book are surprisingly unsympathetic to Cook.Dugard also commits a few significant factual errors. He wrongly describes Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia as "kingdoms," when those terms were simply a misguided 19th century attempt to classify hundreds or thousands of distinct cultures into simplistic buckets. Similarly, he promotes the discredited theory that Easter Island (also known as Rapa Nui) was first settled by South Americans: it is virutally certain that the island was settled solely by Polynesians, and there is no archeological evidence that the famous statues were built by anyone but Polynesians. Perhaps Dugard was influenced by the crackpot theories of Thor Heyerdahl, or perhaps he was gulled by uninformed popular myths. The result is that the book contains "fake science" that would have been avoided by reviewing the current scientific literature.
Great Book (Almost)! A captivating and lively narrative of Cook's early life and rise to a most unlikely command of British explorations. This would have been a great read had the author been able to maintain the vitality of writing for Cook's final cruise that he had brought to the book up to this point. It's as if the author grew fatigued in his interest of Cook in the final chapters, and disappointedly so, for Cook's transformation from a noble Captain and Hero into a cruel, sadistic Hyde is worth telling with the same energy as the young Cook received. Nonetheless, highly recommended!
I've read quite a few books about Cook . I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dugard's. I'm a fan of all of his books. Dugard could have made this book tedious relying solely on Cook's logs. But he adds depth to the book by adding additional info about the times. He also doesn't sugar coat how Cook evolves over the course of his explorations. How someone could be so in love with his wife but leave her behind for years at a time not knowing whether his children were dead or alive is beyond me. If you read as a companion book Dugard's The Explorers, you'll find out more about why people, such as Cook, did what they did. The pressure that was put on a captain of a ship on this type of exploration had to have been immense, the scurvy, the potential of mutiny, drunken sailors, typhoid, venereal disease, cannibals, desertion etc. If you enjoy books of exploration, this is a must read.
Martin Dugard writes in a style that compels the reader to keep on page turning. His research is extensive, details are provided without becoming overwhelming. The reader feels the voyage unfolding as he reads. Great read, I learned many new things about Captain Cook, but more important the details of the way of life that existed in that era for the sea going leader was fascinating. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has curiosity about what motivates an explorer. No GPS, or communication ... wow all alone in the vast expanse of the oceans.
Not discovering but instead 'stitching together' the globe. This is a great book if you're into history, if you're into the Age of Discovery, etc. This book does a good job of showing Cook's mental state and personal thoughts throughout the three voyages citing his written logs. The first couple of voyages he seems like someone given the opportunity of a lifetime to live his dream, not meaning to harm whenever possible. Then finale voyage he devolves into an obsession and he snaps finally letting his self importance go to his head. An amazing story which made the world a bit smaller.
Pretty much obsessed with the historical narrative and Mr Dugard’s style. Last author of this genre I enjoyed this much was Michener. Discovered him while reading the “killing†series with historian Bill O’Reilly (read these if you have not.... do not be afraid of the titles). This book about Capt Cook was the book I read immediately after finishing Into Africa. Education and enjoyment at once!!!
This is a good biography of Captain James Cook, but it suddenly ends with his death. I was researching more than his voyages and this book was good information. However, I wanted to continue with history as it effected the United States in Alaska and Hawaii. To do that I needed to continue after his death with other captains and crew, especially John Ledyard.
When I think of James Cook, Hawaii and the Cook Islands immediately come to mind. I knew nothing else about him. "Farther than Any Man" explores the life of James Cook from his modest upbringings to his death in a faraway place. You learn of the things in Cook's character and environment that drove him to seek success and recognition in the rigid class structure of England. Hard and dangerous life aboard ship on a voyage of discovery, Cook's treatment of crew and the natives he encountered are brought to life. You can feel a change come over Cook on his final and fatal voyage. A fine book for one interested in the bigger than life characters who went out and faced danger in the unknown during the age of discovery.
