While many people are aware that Christianity is surging across the Global South (Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, East Asia), the deeper question is WHY? What's driving this phenomenon? In this well-crafted book, Brian Stiller pinpoints five major factors that explain a great deal. I won't steal his thunder here ... go read the book!

“For two thousand years, the rise and fall of Christian faith has had much to do with renewal and revival,” writes Brian C. Stiller. The last century especially has witnessed the largest sustained movement of people to faith in the Church’s history. In From Jerusalem to Timbuktu, Stiller identifies five “drivers” behind this growth: the Holy Spirit, Bible translation, indigenous leadership, engagement of the public square and holistic forms of ministry. “Living in the midst of this resurgence,” he asks, “we can’t help but wonder: will it carry on?” The only way to find out is to lean in to the Spirit even more.

Brian C. Stiller serves the World Evangelical Alliance as a global ambassador. He was President of Tyndale University College and Seminary, which is in Toronto, Canada. He also founded and edited Faith Today magazine.This book is about Christianity throughout the world, particularly the Global South, Asia, and the Middle East. Reading the book felt like a dream, in a sense, and that added to its appeal. The book was a bit meandering, but in a reflective way.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My review is honest.

“From Jerusalem To Timbuktu” by Brian Stiller is a good read on how Christianity has spread from Jerusalem to all parts of the world. Around 200 pages, the book covers such topics as:1. Definition of the public square and how Christianity has become more engaging in that area.2. Surge of Christianity in areas like: Asia, Africa, and Latin America.3. 3 factors at play in the Holy Spirit generating Christianity’s worldwide growth.4. Translating the Bible in many languages and making the Bible more accessible to billions of people.5. How Christianity has become more engaging in meeting peoples’ practical needs and thereby making them more open to hearing and receiving the gospel.Very readable, the book is an encouraging read on Christianity’s growth worldwide. Will enjoy reading this title again in the future. I was given a review copy by IVP Books in exchange for a fair review.

Maxwell is one of the most famous names in electromagnetic history and his writings are cherished and treasured, so any comments on the content of this book are redundant. However, one is warned that the Kindle book is a 'scan', which is to say that it has been scanned electronically by a device such as a computer scanner, and this process, while giving us a portable copy of this famous text, makes it almost unreadable. Each page comes through as a small yellowed sheet covered with tiny writing, not surprising as each page of the book was scanned successively and the book's page size was evidently small, so the scanned image occupies only about 1/2 to 1/4 of the page size appearing on the reader. I was not able to find any way of increasing the page size on my two readers, so reading the book was a real chore. I would recommend that potential buyers wait until a better version is available.

A very bad publishing (by Publisher) & sales ( by Amazon) job. Pages 271 to 291 are repeated; and worst of all, pages 326 to 348 and page 369 are missing altogether. No one seems to have checked it. I returned the first copy I got and pointed out the problem; Amazon sent me a replacement copy, which had exactly the same defects as the first one!!! No one at Amazon seems to have read the reason for return - though I had asked that they should check the book before sending the replacement, but people at Amazon totally ignored that!!! So the Publisher and Amazon made a very bad case of an otherwise Excellent historical and rigorous exposition of the the subject matter covered by Maxwell. I think it is a great disservice to the genius of Maxwell.

Instead it examines nothing less than our society itself by examining issues such as class, race, gender, individualism, competition, success, and how each of these influence and inform our views of the others. It also brings us along as fans and participants, rooting for our side in a kind of competition rarely noted outside its circle of participants. For readers who have only flipped through the cheerleading competitions on ESPN2, appearing betweeen skinny rowboats and frisbee dogs, this book will definitely bring an appreciation to the sport. The amount of athleticism, determination, and talent required of these young women is strikingly portrayed. One can't help but be drawn in by the spirit!

As a journalist and a woman still smarting from trying out for cheerleading seven times without making it, I have read Mr. McElroy's book several times and keep going back to it. Many of the reviews you will read here are of the "Harper Valley PTA" variety, which may satisfy some primitive gossipy fascination with the individuals in the book, which is unfortunate.This is not about any stereotypical cheerleaders - nearly all of the girls on the Greenup County Kentucky squad know poverty or are just above it. They are not Daddy's princesses. They don't drive sports cars.Yes, we do want to know what happened to the stars of the Greenup County Cheerleading team. This was their chance to escape a section of the country where women's opportunities are still limited. And in Greenup County, cheerleading is and has been a ticket out - a place where being able to land a standing back tuck (a relatively difficult tumbling stunt) can be the ticket to a college scholarship and dreams of a bright future.Another update, nearly five years after the original printing, would be welcome, except I sure hope that all the girls don't all have babies and are working at Wal-Mart, that they haven't lost their dreams. I want to know that they made it, but according to the reviewers here, only Rachel Brown made it to continue to cheer in college. Right now I am using the first edition of the book for reference as I lent out my newer edition with the update, so please forgive my lack of clarity with this part.I hope that Mr. McElroy, for all the abuse he has taken, is proud of the in-depth masterpiece he produced. Yes, he has a few facts wrong but when you consider the amount of comphrehensive information that he consumed and put forth, especially for a first book, I think it can be forgiven. I only say this because of the huge amount of criticism reviewers have blasted him with - people took this book real personally!Some of his critics believe that he took advantage of the confidences of the girls. I think he was doing his job. If he were to go and do an in-depth story in any place - a ghetto, a debutante ball, the same technique would be used. As a journalist, I understand. He was right. Anything less would have not been this great book. It was necessary and right.This book is a study in sociology. Mr. McElroy is going in-depth on a group of young women in a place that that probably no one else would bother with and does it with great insight and compassion. I hope to hear more from him in the future.I have read both the original hardback and the paperback with added foreword. If any additional editions are published, I would recommend a different cover because the cover makes the book look like fluff. It is far from that. Also the title, "We've Got Spirit" is somewhat misleading. This book is no Afterschool Special. Another minor annoyance is the captions for the pictures are in the back of the book rather than with the pictures, making me have to work a little bit too hard. : )Unfortunately, I doubt that many cheerleaders will read and discuss this book. It would benefit them to do so. I think that many teenagers would benefit from reading this rather than "Antigone," but please don't tell the people at my kids' school that - they will probably run me up the flagpole.

Why is it that people like this "writer" (I use the term loosely) have to descend to the level of the most common divisior? How dare he insinuate that Greenup County is somehow inferior to other areas. Does he think it impossible to leave the area and achieve what he thinks is success? Ask Kathleen Battle, who grew up a stone's throw from Greenup Co. across the Ohio River. She never managed to escape the "hick" culture as we all know. There are world renowned authors from the county. There are scientists, lawyers, doctors, athletes and the same mixture of humanity you find anywhere with some notable exceptions that are rarely matched anywhere. The cheerleaders fit that mold. They have achieved exceptional success. But they aren't the only ones. There is a dance school that produces just as many modern dance success stories as the cheerleaders do in their pursuit. Yes the county is part of the rust belt. What a terrible fate for the residents. But there is far more to life there than the city success the author values so much. I wouldn't trade life in that area for any city existence. The arrogance of people like this author is enough reason to keep me away from urban life. I prefer people who's first instinct isn't how they can profit from your destruction. And speaking of destroyed lives. The author should visit the facility across the river from Greenup Co. where New York City and Boston dump their "hick" children that grew up in closets never learning what soap or toothpaste is until they are shipped off to the woods where they are out of sight and out of mind. It's called Edgemeade Of Ohio. Do your own research. So much for the theory that people in the country have some monopoly on uncivil behavior. There are no gangs there either. The murder rate is nothing like those precious cities. Oh yeah I can't wait to move to downtown Detroit and live the urban high life. This author destroyed his own credibility trying to create controversy where none existed. He sullied the good name of a group of children that have garnered far more success than that loser author ever will. These girls are the equivalent of Olympic athletes in their dedication and success. And don't be surprised to see a gold medal gymnast come from the county some day because there is a factory for the production of that talent as well located in the county. That's where the cheerleaders learn most of their skills before they reach high school.The book is a disgrace. It's an attempt to create a scenario that matches the cheap and cheesy garbage we see on tv where country people are portrayed as lunatics and dopers. This author is just what the county needed to bolster their failing economy. Convince the kids their lives are meaningless because they can find more churches than fast food places. How typical of an urbanite to value junk food over service to an honored religion. I imagine the author would never realize that turning people from the ways of sin (you know, murder, robbery, illicit sex - those things are surely worthy of avoiding) is a far better pursuit than stuffing yourself with fat, salt and sugar so you can be 200 lbs. overweight by the time you're 20. My guess is the hard work of cheerleading does much for the self-esteem and physical fitness too. The author could use a good dose of religion too. It might teach him that life isn't measured by how many people live within 100 yards of you. Life in Greenup Co. can be mighty good in fact. It's far better than life in any city I ever had to endure.

Growing up fat is complicated, far more complicated than it needs to be. I was a fat kid and I am now 56. At some point in my 30's I realized that the endless dieting cycles of losing and gaining and losing and hating myself was much worse for me than the extra weight. Everyone who was a fat kid, has a fat kid, works with fat kids (hey teachers and DOCTORS -- I'm talking to you) needs to read this book. While the emotional aspects of the book were indeed heartbreaking, I was really pissed off by how, in some instances medical problems unrelated to weight (asthma, Type 1 diabetes) were overlooked because the problems were blamed on solely on weight. In the last 15 years I've had a couple of doctors neglect to address some important health concerns because my extra 30 lbs was like a fire that needed extinguishing. I will be sending them this book with a note attached.

This is a really, really great book. It gives so much insight into what life can be like as a fat kid and how those experiences affect so many aspects of people's lives. It also gives a great deal of science about being fat and things that I think a lot of people would rather ignore. It's a must read for anyone who was a fat kid, or who has fat kids.

Like salve to my wounds from a war on obesity, I didn't want to put this book down. This war did not just start recently, I've been feeling it's effects for a lifetime. Only now, in my 50s, am I beginning to heal. If you were a fat kid, know a fat kid, are fat right now, or would just love a good read, don't hesitate. You will love it.

Opened the book not knowing what to expect. I couldn't put it down. The heart breaking stories brought tears to my eyes. Being fat is not an easy life to live in this society. Reading the book helped me see that I Thank you Rebecca for writing a very insightful book.

Fat Kids: Truth and Consequences is a must-read for anyone who works with children, whether parent, teacher, doctor, nurse or other care-giver. Insightful and well written, this book compassionately highlights the need for more sense when dealing with kids and weight. I highly recommend purchasing this book.

So much of what passes for "helping" fat children consists of throwing them under the bus and blaming them for getting tire tracks on their clothes. This book is testimony to what happens when parents, teachers and even doctors try to protect their children by taking actions that damage their kids way more than the thing they are trying to protect against. This is a collection of experiences and interviews, plus one very useful perspective from psychologist Peggy Elam, Ph.D on how a whole industry grew up around "fixing" fat kids--“Collateral Damage in the ‘War on Obesity’.” Many of the experiences were heart-rending, but I strongly believe that it's important to respect and listen to what actually happens to people, particularly when their experiences are consistently devalued. I would urge reading through to the end because the interview with Daniel Pinkwater rounds out the collection (pun optional) with a delightful attitude that made me smile. I was given a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review, and I can genuinely recommend it to anyone who wants to really understand this issue that causes so much hysteria.

I went through a wide range of emotion as I read this book. I was a little nervous as I started reading because I have my own “fat kid stories” from when I was a child. I do believe that most of it was me being hard on myself, but they range from having my best friend in Kindergarten tell me that her mother said I had an eating problem to my ex’s grandmother saying to her husband “My, Rebecca has certainly plumped up.” I think many of us have our stories and it stems from living in a society that puts so much focus on the subject of weight, and more importantly, ideal weight = health, fitness, and beauty. But by the end of the book, I found more of an acceptance of myself than I thought I would. The underlying message is a strong one, and one that we don’t hear very often: what we weight should not define who we are.Weinstein does an excellent job of expressing all the emotion and heartache that people go through as they struggle with this topic. I was very appreciative of the teaching attitude she presented as opposed to attempting to prove some point about weight. I felt that I learned more about this societal attitude and about my own attitude towards myself thanks to this book.The stories are heart wrenching and are well told. Bullying is a problem that many of us deal with while in school (and even in the workplace now) and one of the common targets is weight. I think that’s because our media, entertainment, healthcare system, and even government put such an emphasis on it.I strongly encourage you to read this book, regardless of your opinions on the subject matter. Not only is it educational, but it encourages empathy and acceptance from yourself towards yourself.

I agree with the other reviewers. This book starts with the basics and is very clear, easily understandable. I've just started teaching Mechatronics at a community college and reviewed several textbooks. One that the previous Program Director selected was way too complex. They were talking about baud rates in the 1st Introductory chapter. That should be like Chap 8 or 9. This book does not do that. Mr. Petruzella starts off simply, using every day words. I've selected the newer 5th Edition to teach my students, both high schoolers and 1st year college students. I just wished he had written a book for Introduction to Mechatronics. His writing style is very good, very understandable.

Clearly written, accurate and well illustrated, this high quality textbook is an excellent resource to teach yourself the fundamentals of PLCs. Mr. Petruzella has even added photographs and descriptions of the inner workings of commonly used I/O devices, which is especially helpful for novices. Based on Allen Bradley's SLC500 series and their RS LOGIX programming software, it covers enough ground to enable technicians to understand how they work, how to troubleshoot I/O problems, understand, modify and even originate programs found in typical industrial applications.Having moved from the power generation field--where large scale distributed control systems do the vast majority of control and PLCs handle packaged auxiliaries--to the manufacturing industry, I encountered I/O devices and motion control applications I wasn't familiar with. Mr. P's book filled in the gaps.It would have been nice if answers to at least the odd numbered review questions had been included to help quickly test my understanding, but when in doubt, I go back to the text where the answers can always be found.I also purchased the LogixPro PLC simulator (Mr. P also wrote a lab exercise manual that comes with the simulator or you can buy the simulator by itself). It gives you the ability to write, test and debug programs using the RS LOGIX instruction set and programming interface--in fact it's very close to the real deal. I really could have used that when I first started programming PLCs because learning to program using a real PLC hooked up to lights and switches is too limiting (and prohibitively expensive for many of us). And I'd rather not test and debug my programs using live machinery if I can avoid it.

This was required text for an Electronics Course. I have read the author's textbook on Motor Control (Electric Motors and Control Systems)and just like it, this text is a great overview of the subject. The text is well written and formatted. If you have read his motor control book then Chapter 6 of his PLC book will look very similar, Déjà vu will overcome you. Well, he pretty much copied alot of the info from Ch 4 of his Motor Control Book (illustrations and all)! I can't fault Mr. Petruzella for that since the same material crosses over and he did an awesome job of tackling it the first time, if it ain't broken, don't fix it. This caused some good banter in class. Anyways, this is a great text on the subject matter and once again I Aced the class it was required reading in.

For a college book, I suppose it works. The instructor is constantly finding errors in this book, however, especially when it comes to the ladder logic diagrams. These aren't small errors, but rather code-breaking issues that, while not visible to someone like myself who isn't used to working with PLCs, would normally be seen by someone well-versed in this software and logic structuring - which I had expected at least the author to be.

Don't buy if you're not a student. More specifically, you won't have access to the solutions for all problems unless you're an instructor.All I wanted was some structured information to help me learn about PLCs outside of the classroom to increase my skillset for my career. After spending over $300 for the three books, I find out there's no way to verify that my answers are correct. There isn't even a solutions section with half of the answers in the appendix, which is typical for a classroom textbook. Not cool McGraw Hill!

Excellent coverage of electrical circuits and how they relate to PLC's. This book explains everything you will need to know to jump into using PLC's in manufacturing, production, and industry. If this book doesn't work for you, none will. Very well organized. Great explanations for the experienced and newbie alike.

2.5 chapters into this textbook, and I think that it's only slightly easier to read than the newer version. It's cheaper than the fourth edition (go figure), but I ended up getting the international 4E to compliment this. Differences I've found so far are less pictures, and less end of chapter questions (my class assigned homework by question numbers, which did not match). I'll probably keep this for my library after I finish the class since it's so cheap, and also hardcover.
