Review

"It is well conceived physically, graced with both illustrations of historic prayer books and text boxes from the liturgies being discussed, which are a significant help to the reader. This authoritative guide to the Book of Common Prayer as it once was and has now become will well serve anyone interested in Anglicanism or the prayer book tradition." --Christian Century"To understand the phenomenon of Anglicanism we need to understand the Prayer Book -- in its original setting and in its many transformations. I cannot think of a better and more comprehensive resource than this collection of expert discussions in helping us learn more of what Anglicanism has given to the literary heritage of Christianity and culture alike." --from the Foreword by the Most Reverend Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury"Monumental and magnificent! This Guide makes clear why the Book of Common Prayer is both a religious and a literary masterpiece. To say any less than that of this volume would be to misrepresent it; to say more would be to diminish its stature." --Phyllis Tickle"Through the beauty of language, the Book of Common Prayer has nurtured a spirituality that has defined our very unity of faith and worship. The Oxford Guide is both timely and welcome. It takes us to the root of our common life and gives us a living word as we learn about liturgy, language, culture, tradition, and revision. I heartily commend it." --The Most Reverend Andrew S. Hutchinson, Archbishop and Primate, The Anglican Church of Canada"While the essays vary in length, all are thorough. The general quality of the writing and editing has made every page worth reading. It is a book that both teaches well and reads well." --Richard J. Anderson in Historiographer

This is an excellent history of the BCP and includes an overview of the history behind the revisions. It also gives a good background on various Prayer Books found throughout the Anglican Communion.

Terrific reference work.

This is a wonderful (if now somewhat dated by a few years--Prayer Book revision does go on) reference work about the history of the Prayer Book and about editions thereof. Reading it has expanded greatly my knowledge of my chosen religious tradition and of my denomination's siblings around the world.

This is the classic, and it is a thorough examination of prayer books throughout the Anglican Communion. A must-have reference for those seeking in-depth knowledge of their prayer book or a comparison among prayer books.

This is a very ambitious project and you get a bargain for your buck. The print is small and there is a lot of information packed into these fine print pages, but I was disappointed by the lack of detail concerning the Prayer Books of 1549, 1552, 1559, 1604 and 1662. I would have preferred some indepth discussions of the significant theological developments in these versions before launching into the variations of the BCP in the worldwide Anglican communion.

Excellent purchase. Arrived on time, and it's a fantastic resource when studying the Common Book of Prayer. I am so glad I bought it.

The book itself is wonderful on its own on content but the one I received was just perfect, just like the ad. Loved it and the vendor.

From one Book of Common Prayer to many over five centuries, this text provides an outstanding and excellent analysis of the historical and functional evolution of the current Books of Common Prayer currently in use. This Oxford Guide stands out as a primary reference for all.Richard W. Wheeler

Who Is Bono? On March 2, 2007, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)—an American organization that fights for civil rights and justice—presented a special award to a rock star. His name was Paul Hewson, but everyone called him Bono. He was being honored for the work he had done to raise money for the poor and sick, especially in Africa.   When Bono took the stage, he wore a dark suit and the oversize sunglasses he was famous for. His band, U2, was one of the most successful groups in music history. They played all over the world to sold-out stadium crowds. They’d won twenty-two Grammy Awards. Their records had sold millions of copies. They had fans everywhere they went.   But it didn’t start out that way. Bono was born an ordinary boy in the Irish city of Dublin, where people who went to Catholic churches did not always get along with people who went to Protestant churches. Bono asked himself what God meant in a world where people suffered and wars were fought. He had taken all his questions and doubts and put them into song lyrics. When Bono took the stage, he didn’t talk about rock and roll. He talked about people who had nothing. People who were suffering. People who needed help. And he talked about one of the most important forces in his life: God. After all his years of questioning, Bono had learned one thing for sure: God wanted people to help one another.   “The poor are where God lives,” Bono said. “God . . . is with the poor. And God is with us, if we are with them.” Bono lived the kind of glamorous life he could only dream about as a boy. He had become a star. But once he had that life, he discovered there were more important things he needed to do. Not for himself, but for the world.   Chapter 1: Dublin     Paul David Hewson was born in Dublin, the capital city of Ireland, on May 10, 1960. His parents were Bob and Iris Hewson. He had one brother, Norman, who was seven years older. His father, Bob, worked for the post office.    Bob and Iris were both Christian, but they were different kinds of Christians. Bob was Catholic, and Iris was Protestant. In Dublin, it was very unusual for Catholics and Protestants to marry. The two groups did not get along. In Northern Ireland, fighting between Catholics and Protestants often became violent. Even as a young boy, Paul wondered why Christianity, which taught that people should love one another, made people hate one another.   Paul did believe in fighting for some things. On his first day of school, a boy bit one of Paul’s friends. Paul shoved the bully into a nearby railing!   When Paul got a Batman costume, he walked around his neighborhood telling everyone he was going to fight crime. Some older boys laughed at him. They pulled his Batman mask down over his eyes so he couldn’t see anything.    The school that Paul went to was for Protestant children. He and his brother went to a Protestant church on Sundays with their mother while their Catholic father waited outside.   As Paul got older he started to think school was boring. Sometimes he didn’t go at all. He just walked around the city of Dublin. His parents started to worry about his grades. When Paul was twelve, a new school opened near his house. It was called Mount Temple Comprehensive School.    It was different from other Dublin schools because it accepted all kids—Protestant and Catholic, boys and girls. The students at Mount Temple didn’t wear uniforms, which was very unusual in Ireland. Paul’s parents thought this new school might be a good place for him.   Paul liked Mount Temple. He got to wear different styles of clothes and became more confident. He made friends with other students, both boys and girls.   When he was twelve, Paul started playing chess with Norman and his father. He fell in love with the game. He wanted to play it all the time. When he heard about an international chess competition in Dublin, he entered even though he was only twelve. He was the youngest person in the whole tournament, so he stood out among all the other players. He liked the attention, even though he didn’t win.    When he wasn’t playing chess, Paul was often borrowing his brother’s records. He liked a lot of popular performers, including David Bowie, the Beatles, and Led Zeppelin. He also liked Rory Gallagher, who happened to be Irish. There weren’t many rock stars who were Irish. When Bono finally shopped for his very first record, he bought John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s song “Happy Xmas (War is Over).” It was a Christmas song asking the world to end all wars.   Even though he didn’t live in Northern Ireland, Paul was still very aware of the Troubles there. That war was very close to home.   On September 10, 1974, when Paul was fourteen years old, his mother died. She hadn’t been sick, so it was a complete shock to everyone. Iris had collapsed at her own father’s—Paul’s grandfather’s—funeral. Suddenly she was gone. Paul, his father, and his brother were left alone.

What a great resource for middle school physical educators. This book has ready to go instructional units and lesson plans for the national standards and outcomes. The 2nd chapter has a great review of how to teach a standards-based lesson. It also has some nice ideas on how to teach health-related fitness. I pick up this book any time I'm short on ideas and need some inspiration to teach better.

My job is to help teachers become better educators. I look for materials that meet state standards, will increase student engagement, and meet other teaching competencies in the teacher evaluation. This was to help a PE teacher. It was extremely well written and organized. Perfect for beginning or struggling teachers.

A great resource for the physical education teacher of middle school. Broken down into different grade levels this is a wonderful aid to helping your students learn some of the many ways that physical education can take place. I love how each lesson is broken down into smaller tasks to ensure the sport is taught well. 22 modules, 176 lessons. All that a teacher needs to see them through middle school.

Review

"American Girls is probably one of the most urgent conversation starters I’ve read in some time." —Psychology Today“Sales digs into every aspect of girls’ online lives, revealing myriad disturbing details…If you have a teenage daughter, read American Girls. Have her read it, too.” —Newsday “Adult readers will be shocked… [they] might be on Facebook and Twitter, but they probably haven’t even heard of most of the apps that teens use, let alone how they use them…What Sales makes clear is just how prevalent social media is in the life of an American teenager.” —The New York Post"Based on interviews with hundreds of teens from 13 to 19, this exploration of the hypersexualized, social-media-ruled world girls grow up in today is eye-opening and sobering." —People“Social media is life; social media destroys life. For “American Girls,” Ms. Sales spent two and a half years investigating this paradox…. and she’s exquisitely unobtrusive as she does it. Conversations that are not safe for adults seem to open like apps under her fingertips. She has sophisticated methods of infiltration.” —The Wall Street Journal"Sales forces us to face a disturbing new reality in a book that should be required reading for parents, teachers, school administrators, legislators and the boys’ club of Silicon Valley.” —The San Francisco Chronicle"Sales painstakingly draws on scholarly research and numerous interviews with girls from New Jersey to California to offer a harrowing glimpse into a world where self-esteem, friendships and sexuality play out, and are defined by the parameters of social media." —USA Today“In her new book American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers, readers are afforded the opportunity to understand what is really going on in the lives of teenagers, especially our girls. ..This book stands apart from other books targeted at understanding the concerns and current plight of teenage girls… A must read for all parents.” —Examiner"This book is an ice-cold, important wake-up call." —Kirkus Reviews"This is an important book... It’s an essential read if you have teenagers or tweens in your life...I highly recommend American Girls for anyone who wants to understand how our ongoing revelation is playing out for teenagers." —WebInkNow“This intelligent, history-grounded investigation by journalist Sales (The Bling Ring) finds dismaying evidence that social media has fostered a culture "very hostile" to girls in which sexism, harassment, and cyberbullying have become the "new normal," along with the "constant chore" of tailoring one's image for public consumption and approval… Parents, educators, administrators, and the purveyors of social media platforms should all take note of this thoughtful, probing, and urgent work.” —Publishers Weekly *Starred Review*

Do not be a dinosaur and think because you don't use or value social media means it has no power on your child. Do not think this doesn't affect you if you don't have a tween or teen. These are the kids that will be in the workforce in twent years or less. If you expect to be alive then, this affects you. Peer pressure has ALWAYS been an issue. I'm an Xer. I remember peer pressure. Social media takes peer pressure and makes it the thing that gives kids their value. Saying NO doesn't feel empowering to a lot of kids anymore. Feminism has become all twisted into girls feeling forced to be sexy when they should still be children. Remember as a tween how you might notice a boy or read a bookmarked passsage in someone's mom's romance novel but then you might be playing with a Strawberry Shortcake doll or battling with a pretend lightsaber the next minute? Sexuality came about gradually and naturally. Not for these kids. They have access to porn at age eleven or twelve. Much of porn online is violent or fetishist which isn't what you want your child to think is typical sex. I'm not saying porn is bad. I'm saying it has no place in the life of a kid. Especially when they see this stuff daily and unfiltered. They become desensitized. They focus on how they LOOK and how many likes they get. It's a real mess. Girls in middke school photoshop their pics to look thinner & prettier. Intelligence does not get likes. The kids idolize the Katdashians and the number one life goal is "Be famous." Remember how it used to be that was a goal for the few kids who wanted to be an actor/actress and fame just was going to mean they were good at the job they loved? These kids are unhappy. They talk about how hard it all is. I began reading this book because of worrisome things I've noticed going on in instagram accts etc of teenagers I care about. This book explained what I was seeing, why, and that it's not an isolated group of kids. They are mostly all affected. Worse, the age that this is happening is younger each year. Everyone needs to read this book. Whether you have kids or not. Boy or girl. Male or female. It's not just the girls who are affected. The boys are just as affected. If you think this doesn't concern you, it will when these kids grow up and run the country. We need to have a dialogue in this country about what we value and what our hopes are for this youngest generation. I love technology. I got an iphone one the day it went on sale back in 2007. Loving technology does not mean we don't need to use our brains and think. Kids are not adults. Period. It doesn't matter that they are growing up. They are not GROWN. They need to be protected. People need to be parents and not best friends. Please. Please. Read this book. Easily the most important book you'll read this year. As a nation, we need to talk about this. Kudos to Nancy Jo Sales for such excellent research & exhaustive interviews. We need this book to educate us & start us talking.

I am a Teaching Pastor at a large evangelical church in Texas. I read this book after hearing Nancy speak at a Technology and Faith conference, and it inspired crucial conversations and sermons in our church. I can't recommend it highly enough for parents of both girl and boy tweens and teens. We've buried our heads in the sand long enough. We need to understand the dangers our children face in the online world BEFORE we hand them internet connected devices so we can help them navigate this brave new world in a safe and healthy way. Nancy's book provides the data and stories we need to make informed parental decisions. Her book is brutally and explicitly honest, and therefore not appropriate for younger children (the language and stories are rough). But that brutal honesty is exactly what parents need to face. May this book inspire life-giving conversations in your own home, ministry, or church.

The book is full of scenarios of what a lot of teenagers are into. I was looking forward to the conclusion after a while since the scenarios never seemed to stop. I wish the author also delved on what adults can do to help these kids or what adults can do to become more a part of the kids' life.

This book is the most important book I have read in a long time. I haven't been able to talk about anything else while reading it, and am truly sad that it is over.Nancy Jo Sales' journey across America to examine the effects that social media has on teenage girls from the ages 13-19, is terrifying. She paints a clear portrayal of why girls feel the need to share every waking moment with their followers, and why they feel that they owe their bodies to boys. She states that girls are "in need of a set of critical tools with which to evaluate their experiences as girls and women in the digital age". Navigating social media needs to be a conversation had in every classroom, and at every dinner table. If you have kids, like kids, think that kids deserve to be safe and happy, you need to read this book. You'll hear stories that will break your heart, and realize that now is the time to lift girls up to ensure that they are not lost in the current political narrative. It starts from birth, and we can reverse negative external factors with good parenting and proper sexual education.

As a Christian woman, mother and grandmother of girls, and a teacher at a typical American middle school, I believe every thinking adult should read this book. I witness firsthand, with sickening frequency, how social media is stealing girls'self-worth and leaving them personally and emotionally vulnerable. This book is an explicit, unflinching, carefully documented investigation of how social media 24/7 is shaping the lives of girls. Nancy Jo Sales has written a book everyone should read--and talk to one another about. Face-to-face. In person. Phones off. Because we "realize how dear girls are." It's time adults start paying attention, get a plan, and act.
