About the Author
Maurice Pledger is an internationally-acclaimed artist known for his realistic and detailed illustrations of animals and wildlife. He's had no formal art training, but achieves the realism and detail in his beautiful artwork by spending hours in the field observing, sketching and studying his subjects in their natural environment. First published at age 17, he has since had his illustrations featured on greeting cards, prints, gifts, and books. He has created several successful series, including the Peek-and-Find series, the Nature Trails series, and the Pledger Sticker Books. We've had good luck with the Pledger books, and this was a nice entry; it has turned out to be the favorite of the various themed books. The books can't take rough use, (especially the flaps), but at least none of ours have been tetchy. Battery operated books can sometimes fade in and out between working and not working, but that hasn't been our experience. Even if the sound didn't work the pictures are engaging and the animals are "friendly" looking, so this still works as a picture book. The sounds, though, are the icing on the cake.
My son loves these books. I would honestly buy the whole series if I could afford it. The book is a pop out what has different ocean sounds for each page. I bought this for him when he was less than 1 year old and we still use it once a week. It probably will last him until he is even school age, or maybe older. The book has interesting and colorful pictures. The different ocean sounds are realistic and clear. Also, the book has very detailed information about the different ocean creatures so it's interesting to look at as an adult or older child.
We first purchased the ocean book & loved it. We then bought the rest of the books & they are all exceptionally fantastic. Each child has different favorites, but they are all really good quality & very educational.Our favorites are the ocean, night & safari. If you do have younger one's as others have noted the pop-ups are somewhat easy to pull out so be careful; however, the younger one's really enjoy them as well so I would still share them w/ them. I actually kept the pieces they pull out & you can use them in scrapbooking or arts/crafts. So, while they tear them out of the book at least you can find another use for them.The sound can vary a bit from book to book in the series & sometimes can be loud. This can be good/bad depending on your child. As an adult it is really neat to turn each page & have the sounds of the animals/mammals/species sound out at you (depends on which book in the series you buy - for example in the ocean book our favorite page with sound are the whales). If the adults find it enjoyable then the children must love it!!!These books are a very good find - the quality is excellent & there is so much to learn in them & they are fun!Highly recommend.
The sounds and pictures are fantastic with this book. However, 3 of the pages have torn pop-ups that makes the book look used. For example you turn a page and it won't pop-up because the left side of the pop-up has been torn from the backing and laying against the white page. I'll have to buy some strong glue to fix this. I ordered this book new so this was definitely a disappointment to have it arrive in the condition that it did. I'm not sure if I just got a used one or if the pages are too flimsy to hold together.
Bought 2 of these, one for each grandson for Christmas. One of them arrived with a dead battery. I ordered new batteries which would be needed anyway and the sounds are really realistic. This should hold my 2 and 3 year old grandson's attention. The pop ups are amazing and they move! Great price and could not find anything like this in a children's book club I am in, just on amazon!
My kids love these books... we have 3. The batteries die after about a year. The illustrations are great, as are the sounds and pop ups. Very educational as well as entertaining for little ones.
Bought this as a Christmas gift for a five year-old boy and his siblings. I would have kept it for myself if I hadn't had the children in mind. I've always loved pop-up books and this one's a beauty. Their mother said they haven't lost their interest in it yet.
Originally found this book at a museum in Key West FL. Loved it so much I paid full price for my first copy. I have since purchased 3 additional books for grandchildren and my sister, who is an elementary school teacher, doing a unit on Oceans. The pop up scenes are beautiful and the sounds are so realistic you would swear you are under water!
