About the Author
Willard Ikola is a legendary figure in the world of hockey. His successes as a player and coach are matched by his disarmingly courteous and folksy manner. Jim Hoey was born and raised in Taconite, Minnesota, on the Mesabi Iron Range, and graduated from Greenway High School in Coleraine, where he played for three years on the varsity hockey team. He played collegiately at St. Mary's University in Winona and later was a head coach at Shakopee and Farmington High Schools. A retired secondary social studies teacher, Hoey published his first book, Minnesota Twins Trivia, in 2010. A second book, Puck Heaven, on the Minnesota State Boys Hockey Tournament, was published in 2011, with a revised edition coming out in 2015. His third book, Minnesota Vikings Trivia, was released in 2013.

I was from South Minneapolis, my dad an Irishman from Boston. He worked night and day to move us up and out to Edina, where Ike was already becoming a legend. As my dad became involved in coaching youth hockey, he befriended Ike, and I got to be very close to his son Matt. Any kid like myself coming through the Edina system dreamed of playing for Ike and the Edina Hornets. When my family moved back east I was depressed a bit, there was never anyone who could match-up to Ike for high school hockey. He set the standard for coaching that level of hockey, teaching and cultivating future NHL and Division One players. He was born for it, and knew in his bones at a very early age that this would be his calling. I love hearing about guys my dad knew, and legends of American hockey like "Maroosh" and the coach of Richfield, Gene Olive. Ike's record speaks for itself, and his early life is fascinating for anyone who loves the game. Only fitting that the American Hockey Hall of Fame is in Ike's hometown, Eveleth, MN.
