Review

A "Best Book of 1998" Library Journal selection"This is the definitive work on Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa.... The work is exhaustively researched and scrupulously documented; it also makes for engrossing reading, as Latin America specialist Katz takes hold of the legend, gives it a good shaking, and comes up with something far more complex." (Library Journal starred review)"The lifework of a great historian, this book is without rival as a biography of one of the enigmatic figures of the 20th century. . . . With scrupulous detail and objectivity, and with a fluid narrative style, this is the book on Villa that has long been awaited by both scholars and general readers." (Adolfo Gilly Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico)"A towering new biography.... The research here obviously represents decades of devotion, and it is formidable.... Gives broader perspective on the revolution, one that is sorely needed." (New York Times Book Review)"A splendid work that can be enjoyed by the general reader and by scholars of the period on both sides of the border." ―The Journal of American History"Anyone with any interest in Pancho Villa will want to have this book. It is the last word on the subject and will no doubt be the definitive work. . . . You'll be hooked." (Publication of the El Paso County Historical Society)"Friedrich Katz's The Life and Times of Pancho Villa is a masterpiece of contemporary historiography. . . . Diligent, extremely well-documented, fluid and elegant at all times, Friederich Katz presents Mexicans with our ghosts―alive." (Carlos FuentesLos Angeles Times Book Review)

From the Inside Flap

Alongside Moctezuma and Benito Juárez, Pancho Villa is probably the best-known figure in Mexican history. Villa legends pervade not only Mexico but the United States and beyond, existing not only in the popular mind and tradition but in ballads and movies. There are legends of Villa the Robin Hood, Villa the womanizer, and Villa as the only foreigner who has attacked the mainland of the United States since the War of 1812 and gotten away with it.Whether exaggerated or true to life, these legends have resulted in Pancho Villa the leader obscuring his revolutionary movement, and the myth in turn obscuring the leader. Based on decades of research in the archives of seven countries, this definitive study of Villa aims to separate myth from history. So much attention has focused on Villa himself that the characteristics of his movement, which is unique in Latin American history and in some ways unique among twentieth-century revolutions, have been forgotten or neglected. Villa’s División del Norte was probably the largest revolutionary army that Latin America ever produced. Moreover, this was one of the few revolutionary movements with which a U.S. administration attempted, not only to come to terms, but even to forge an alliance. In contrast to Lenin, Mao Zedong, Ho Chi Minh, and Fidel Castro, Villa came from the lower classes of society, had little education, and organized no political party. The first part of the book deals with Villa’s early life as an outlaw and his emergence as a secondary leader of the Mexican Revolution, and also discusses the special conditions that transformed the state of Chihuahua into a leading center of revolution. In the second part, beginning in 1913, Villa emerges as a national leader. The author analyzes the nature of his revolutionary movement and the impact of Villismo as an ideology and as a social movement. The third part of the book deals with the years 1915 to 1920: Villa’s guerrilla warfare, his attack on Columbus, New Mexico, and his subsequent decline. The last part describes Villa’s surrender, his brief life as a hacendado, his assassination and its aftermath, and the evolution of the Villa legend. The book concludes with an assessment of Villa’s personality and the character and impact of his movement.

First of all, I must say Friedrich Katz deserves a standing ovation for the study and writing of revered Mexican revolutionary general Pancho Villa. This is THE book to get if you are interested in Pancho Villa and the Mexican revolution as was presented to him and his environment and dealings. A must be read book for every American born Mexican like myself who want's to dig a little deeper in our historical hero. Friedrich does an astounding job in separating the man from the myth and legend only to have us see that he WAS/IS the legend without myth in this book. Villa the villain and Villa the revolutionary Generalissimo seem to go hand in hand as Katz really does an outstanding job of portraying him as he was without being biased. I can say hands down at the very end of this book, it left me with tears and a smile on my face and gave me a GREAT reconnection to my heritage and deep respect for a national hero. May Friedrich Katz be blessed and wins my respect and may the man known as Francisco "Pancho" Villa rest in peace, Viva la revolution!! Y muerte a los que se rrobaron su cabeza!!

Nearly 20 years since its initial publication, Katz's "The Life and Times of Pancho Villa" remains one of the most important books on Villa and the Mexican Revolution. Any serious student of Mexico or the US Borderlands should have a copy and its frequently cited by other authors covering this period, even if indirectly. Casual readers take warning; this is not a breezy non-fiction read, but a serious, heavily researched study on a controversial historical figure and a conflict that for many American is a total mystery.

Meticulously researched, beautifully written, very well organized -- an authentic view of a complex and controversial figure. Lots of background on the Mexican Revolution and its major players, the state of Chihuahua, economic and social relations during a time of amazing change, and Mexican-US relations. Helpful summaries of various points of view, so even though the author's own definite opinions come through, you also get a sense of the wider debate. Thoughtful comparisons of the Mexican Revolution with other revolutions and insights on the dynamics of revolution in general. Incredible level of detail. I don't know where else you could find a book on this topic that is this thoughtful, balanced, and sensitive -- and readable. It is also over 900 pages long. That's 900 pages of solid content -- it's not verbose, and it's not a data dump, it's all good stuff -- but daunting all the same. Sometimes I felt the author got too far down in the weeds and lost the big picture, but this was definitely the exception rather than the rule. If the length bothers you, (1) do not try to read it in a hurry and (2) pick and choose (guided by the well-written headings) if you want, there's no law that says you have to read the whole thing. Definitely a thing o' beauty and worth the trouble.

This has to be the most comprehensive treatise of the enigmatic Pancho Villa written. Friedrich Katz spent years of forensic type research to bring to life in immense, but highly readable detail, the life and times of one of Mexico's greatest historical figures. Replete with all the intrigues, humour, battles and politics of the those heady times, I can definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in powerful charismatic men who have shaped the world we live in. The book store delivered it well within the time quoted and the book was in excellent condition.

Katz provides the best biography of Pancho Villa. It is lengthy but is thorough and covers the relevant times in his life. Villa was a thug and a thief and Katz shows that well. His attacks against the government and the United States are clearly laid out and Katz analyzes the surrounding characters very well. If you are interested in the Mexican Revolution this is an essential book to have. For those looking to build up a library on Mexico history this is a must read. I loved every page of this book and have read it several times and each time I unlock a new level of knowledge about the revolution and Villa. Highly recommend.

We were a little surprised of the number of pages!!!! However, about 200 of the 985 pages are conclusion (had to read it first), notes, appendix, etc. We LOVE IT!!!As a Mexican, I say ... It is a GREAT BOOK, full of details and adventures of the Centauro del Norte, Doroteo Arango!!!

A long and insightful read.

This book gives a view of Mexico and Pancho Villa and President Woodrow Wilson and Germany before WWI that I never knew. Friedrich Katz wove a beautiful tapestry of words. The book is over 600 pages and I would read it again.

National Geographic Student Atlas of the World: Revised Edition, by National Geographic

From Booklist

The goal of this colorful atlas is to help students in grades six through nine "better understand basic geographic concepts and compare and contrast information critical to making global connections." National Geographic atlases are known for their excellent introductory material, and this one is no exception. In fact, more than 50 pages of introductory material precede the maps. These pages cover an array of topics organized under "Physical Systems" and "Human Systems" and expose students to a variety of thematic, political, and physical maps. By comparison, the map section of the atlas seems a bit skimpy. Arrangement is by continent, and information is presented in fairly broad strokes. A box containing "Facts and Figures" and a satellite map kick off each continent's section, followed by a physical map, a political map, and thematic maps covering climate, precipitation, population, and economic factors. In "North America," there are also elevation and political maps specific to Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. Political maps show little more than major divisions, capitals, and a few other cities. Each continent section concludes with a two-page feature that homes in on a particular theme, for example, the Great Rift Valley in "Africa" and World Heritage sites in "Asia." Following the atlas portion of the volume are a "Countries of the World" section with statistics and flags, a glossary, and a list of Web sites. There are two indexes: one for themes and one for place-names. If the goal is simply to find a location, this atlas is not the first place a student should look. Since its emphasis is thematic, it doesn't take the place of a more generally useful tool, such as The Kingfisher Student Atlas (2003). However, it provides a good introduction to different mapping concepts. Mary Ellen QuinnCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

The political maps are oversimplified. They show only country outlines and major cities. I have noticed several errors in thematic maps. The precipitation map for Australia on page 115 shows more than 80 inches of precipitation in Southwest Australia, not possible In a Mediterranean climate. The climate map for India on page 94 incorrectly shows an extensive arid climate in the Deccan. On the elevation map of the United States on page 64, none of the rivers draining into the Atlantic Ocean are labeled.

I work with 2nd graders through college level students and find this "Student Atlas" wonderful and very resourceful to maps and information of the world! The colorful pictures and maps make it more exciting then other atlas's. The extra conversion charts and charts with pictures of all the country flags are useful for students too. I like it for the fact it has everything within the 144 pages, such as even time zone charts, earth and space information, about the different kind of maps, and the Human Systems. I highly recommend this for families or for resources in a classroom for all age levels.

So....I have written a book review before maybe...never. But when this book came I felt like sharing. I had literally been waiting by the door for Fed Ex to bring this book, I wanted detailed maps of some of the islands and countries around the world that my girls and I had talked about visiting. This book may be interesting, if what you want is page after page of world maps showing languages, religion, climate... followed by some continental physical maps. I was looking for an atlas of the world, like a road atlas I guess, something that showed maps of each country individually with more detail, maybe a few interesting facts, but mostly where the country was in the world, maybe some geographic features of the country, major cities (airports)...hard not to be disappointed with this book. It's going to take a lot of page turning to learn about any particular area. We will keep it, but just wanted to give my own perspective on the book, I thought I had researched it well enough before purchasing-the mistake is mine, we will keep searching for our dream travel idea book. Ok book, just not what I was hoping it would be...

I wanted to buy an useful and not too expensive Geographic Atlas. I dedicated quite a lot of time to evaluating my options, and ended up deciding that this Atlas was likely to be a good choice, basing my decision on the sample pages that Amazon offers. Fortunately, when I received my purchase, I discovered that I had made the right decision :)I guess I was lucky. I thought that this Atlas was probably good, so I took the chance and bought it... However, I could have been wrong. The problem is that this Atlas had no customer reviews, and I generally make my decisions regarding what to buy in Amazon based on the experiences of others who have already purchased the item I want. The reason for that is that an editorial review can be inaccurate, and the back cover can (sometimes) provide inexact information, but other customers generally tell the truth...Now, I'd like to correct the lack of reviews on this Atlas by writing one. I really don't need to say too much, basically that all that the back cover says is true. You can read that back cover in the sample pages, and you can also read the table of contents and an excerpt. Anyway, if you don't want to spend time doing that, I can repeat to you some of the facts you could read there :)First of all, I want to highlight the fact that there are 90 detailed and colorful maps. Those maps include physical and political maps, maps about climate and precipitation, and about population. In addition to that, the maps are separated in different sections, and at the end of each section there is a chapter that centers on a particular problem. For example, at the end of the section dedicated to North America, the focus is on natural hazards, and in the section dedicated to South America the focus is on the Amazon Rain Forest. There are other chapters that focus on special themes in the sections regarding Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania, and Antarctica. As if that were not enough, you can find many charts and graphs alongside the maps. What is more, the organization of the information that accompanies them is clear and didactical. You will also be able to find country flags and facts, and some web sites where you will be able to find updated information, even after buying this Atlas. There is also a Glossary that defines some terms the average reader might not be familiar with, and a thematic Index. On the whole, my opinion is that this Atlas is great. It probably isn't the finest Geographic Atlasyou can buy, but I think that it is likely to be the best you can buy at this highly reasonable price. I strongly recommend it, if you need an Atlas that is useful, not too big (so as to carry it with you) and specially not expensive. I think that you will enjoy reading it, and that you will learn a lot :)Belen Alcat

I was in quick need of world maps but didn't have the money to buy one of those giant atlases, so I bought this one which came in very handy. It's not exhaustive; it wasn't meant to be. Seriously, I don't know why this atlas was given so many bad reviews: it isn't bad at all. It really is great if you are a middle to high school student for those geography classes.

Good quality book. Awkward division of continents for those of us trying to draw each continent. Time and time again we wish there were a page with political boundaries that included a whole continent, in addition to the broken up well-detailed pages.

Excellent student desktop resource! My 4th graders are fascinated by these and many request that they use them during free reading time. Even though we use virtual resources too, students enjoy the convenience of lying on the floor with a buddy to flip thought the pages of these great books. Sadly, they are no longer being printed.

This is a must have for every middle school and older student. Colorful, well-arranged, and well-illustrated for ease of use. Can't go wrong with this atlas. A good resource for adults also, in a world where borders and political alliances are rapidly changing.

Yo Soy Muslim: A Father's Letter to His Daughter

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—A lovely and lush celebration of intersectionality and identity. In this lyrical letter, a father shares with his young daughter the different questions she will encounter as she grows up as a Muslim and a Latina—some positive and some negative. But, he tells her, "No matter what they say, know you are wondrous." Her father highlights the aspects of her multicultural heritage and roots that she should be proud of. As the pair fly across the night sky, they see angels and hummingbirds, majestic skyscrapers and mosques, and the fields of the girl's ancestors. In times of tribulation, the father advises his daughter, "Say it with me: Yo soy Muslim. Our prayers were here before any borders were." The connection between the girl and her parents is apparent, and the warmth reverberates off the page. Gonzales's inspirational text is matched perfectly by Amini's vibrant, jewel-toned illustrations. The images are rendered digitally but have a patchwork, mixed-media feel, adding to the dreamlike quality of the artwork. Muslims of different racial and ethnic identities are pictured throughout in prayer, emphasizing the diversity of the community. This exaltation of identity will resonate with fans of Patti Kim's Here I Am and Hena Khan's Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns. It would also fit nicely in Father's Day displays and as a world religions curricular tie-in. VERDICT A strong choice for all picture book collections.—Shelley M. Diaz, School Library Journal

Review

"A poetic celebration of heritage and faith, past and future, this book is unique for its blend of indigenous, Spanish-speaking cultural content with Muslim religious identity. This book will be cherished by Muslim families seeking to boost their children's confidence and intriguing for non-Muslim families seeking to learn." (Kirkus Reviews)"A lovely and lush celebration of intersectionality and identity. . . . The connection between the girl and her parents is apparent, and the warmth reverberates off the page. Gonzales’s inspirational text is matched perfectly by Amini’s vibrant, jewel-toned illustrations. . . .This exaltation of identity will resonate with fans of Patti Kim’s Here I Am and Hena Khan’s Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns. . . . A strong choice for all picture book collections." (School Library Journal)*"This startling introduction to faith captures the inclusiveness of Islam as do the following spreads showing children of different races and colors juxtaposed against scenes of nature and art. Using collage-style techniques and featuring bold characters, Amini's joyful, boisterous art soars, and readers may well feel they’re flying, too. A special book that truly seems to “dance with the wind” and “smile at the sun."" (Booklist, STARRED REVIEW)"This intensely personal book is not meant as an introduction to Islam; instead, it speaks directly to Muslim children growing up in a place where they may be marked as different—children in need of a voice to recognize and speak for them." (Publisher's Weekly)"Gonzales pens an honest, heartfelt text about the beauty of cultural identity, a loving, compassionate reminder to his daughter to embrace all that she is. Although written in simple, lyrical verse, the text conveys a weighty message." (The Horn Book Magazine September/October 2017)

The book is beautifully illustrated and the overall sentiment is sweet but it sort of seems disjointed. It lacks a flow with content going from general folk-type statements to statements about ancestors to how to cope when people aren't kind to you. It's meant to be a letter from a father to a daughter but it just reads like random statements that don't really feel like they work together or even communicate a point. For this reason it makes it difficult to engage in the story. I had hoped for a little more substance that would help introduce my daughter to a different religion and culture but unfortunately this book doesn't do that.

I loved reading this book. It is so simple, yet poetic. I do not have kids yet, but I plan to read this to them when I do iA. I also enjoy that this book highlights that Latinos can be Muslim, too. I have yet to see another book like this that makes Muslim Latino youth feel included and that they belong. Excellent work, Mark!

A gorgeous, gorgeous book. I bought it to read to my 5 and 8yo. We are neither Muslim nor Hispanic, but you don't need to be either to appreciate a beautiful book that celebrates the fact that strength and beauty come from diverse experiences and perspectives. Highly recommend to anyone looking to expand their kids' minds and universe.

This book is something rare and special indeed. It speaks straight to the heart in a simple yet profound way. I loved this book. I loved this book probably as much as my kids loved it. And they really enjoyed it. I found a home in its pages and in its sweet words. The pictures are beautiful and take you on a journey. Yo Soy Muslim is a refreshing book that I have no doubt will become a classic that we can go to when we need to be reminded about self-love and the beauty that exists within. And you don't need to be Muslim to appreciate the message of wonder, love, renewal and healing. I bought several copies of this book to gift to the children in my community. It is a gem!

This book is so beautifully illustrated and absolutely lovely to read out loud. I'm basically buying one for all my friends with kids. Words can't express how thankful I am to the author & illustrator for making a book that my 2nd generation American Muslim daughter can relate to.

A beautifully written and well thought out book for a young child. Tackles the harsh realities of Islamophobia that young Muslims are witnessing more and more.Empowering and enables the child to see all of his/her qualities as a Muslilimm not only as a human being.I wish there was a follow on book for an older child!

This is an instant classic in our family. It carries such a profound message alongside breathtaking pictures. The message of love and hope leaps off the pages. While we live in troubling times, this book is a wonderful reminder that we all belong. I am so grateful a book like this was made and I hope to see more like this to add to our home library.

Great book with a great message, our daughter loves this book.
