A folk tale has been described as a short story that comes from oral tradition. Folk tales often deal with everyday life and characters are animals with human characteristics. The first publication of Ukrainian oral folklore was at the beginning of the 19th century; by the 20th century, an impressive number of folkloric collections and studies were produced in Western Ukraine. Ivan Franko wrote numerous articles on folk oral traditions and a six-volume edition of Ukrainian proverbs. During this period, Volodymyr Hnatiuk was the most productive ethnographer and folklorist. This book is copyrighted 1996; Ukraine gained independence on August 24, 1991. Reference to Ukraine should correctly have been made to "Ukraine" (one word) and not to "the Ukraine" (two words).The phrase "the Ukraine" should read as one word "Ukraine." This error may take decades to correct, but a public platform such as this (with its vast audience) is ideal for the edification of people, which is why I point it out here.An explanation appeared in Arnold Berke's article "Ukrainian Dawn," Historic Preservation, March/April, 1993, pp. 31-32:"Ukraine is a new country but an old nation--a fact often lost on foreigners, who remain largely ignorant of this land of fifty-two million people, Europe's second largest in area after Russia. Ukraine to them has always been "the" Ukraine--no more than a region of its powerful northern neighbor, Russia--and Ukrainian culture a mere variation on the Russian national theme. Russians used to call Ukraine "Little Russia," a sobriquet that Tchaikovsky`s Second Symphony earned for its use of Ukrainian folk themes. Even the Ukrainian language was downgraded as a dialect of Russian, although Ukrainian differs from Russian as much as does Polish."The nineteen Ukrainian folk tales within the 160 pages of Ukrainian Folk-tales are retold in an engaging/enthralling manner by Christina Oparenko, who originally heard them from her Ukrainian grandmother. Oparenko relates that in ancient times, since people often could neither read nor afford to buy books, the learning process often took place by means of repetition--and, it was thus that folktales developed. Folktales weren't only used to amuse children, they were used to help people remember bits of history, to explain why people behaved in certain ways, to give rules for living in a community, or to include other information that the storyteller thought should be passed on.Following the engaging, educational Ukrainian folktales, is a Notes section. Since the first folktale is entitled, The Wise Tsarina, the first note aptly references the word "Tsarina"--it states, rightly so, that there were no Tsars in Ukraine. Oparenko further states: "Originally it (Ukraine) was ruled by princes and although there were a couple of kings in the Ukrainian provinces of Halych and Volhyn (Galicia and Volhinia [Volhynia]) this was not a form of government that the Ukrainian people liked. The idea of a Tsar only came to Ukraine once it had been taken over by Russia in the eighteenth century. However, I have kept the name of Tsar in some of these stories partly because that is how the stories came to me and partly because it adds a rather more exotic feel to them."A second note in the book explains the word Rushnik (in Ukrainian rushnyk). A rushnyk (Ukrainian plural is rushnyky) is a ritual cloth. As The Ukrainian Museum in NYC states on its website: "rushnyky (ritual cloths). The ritual cloths have a long history in the Ukrainian folk art tradition, dating back to pagan times. These textiles, as well as their designs are deeply symbolic. While most of the symbolism and magic surrounding their meaning has been lost with time, nevertheless enough information has been passed down through the centuries for people to still utilize rushnyky even today in various religious ceremonies and passage of life rituals."The final explanation in the Notes section describes stoves since several of the stories mention them. In addition to the explanation given in the book, please note that a large clay oven is called in Ukrainian a pich; and, above an indoor clay oven was a sleeping area, an oven-bed.Following the Notes section, the last entry in the book is entitled Recipes, and here we find several recipes for foods mentioned in Ukrainian Folk-tales; a nice touch is that each of the recipes includes the title of a folktale so that the reader may refer to it. These recipes are written to an audience of young people, and rightly so, since the reading level recommended for this book is ages 9-12. Recipes include: pancakes ("called nalysnyky in Ukrainian"; see note in paragraph below), filling for pancakes, bortsch (borshch), varenyky ("these are a bit like ravioli"), kissel/kysil pudding, and bread.Some personal notes: In her book, Traditional Ukrainian Cookery, author Savella Stechishin explains that the Ukrainian name for simple griddle cakes is 'mlyntsi'--the name refers to plain and yeast-raised cakes. "The richer, wafer-thin cakes that are filled, then rolled, folded or layered are called 'nalysnyky.' There is a clear distinction between the two, both in the method of preparation and in the finished product. The dainty and elegant nalysnyky have always been a great favorite in Ukrainian homes." (Savella Stechishin was born in Ukraine. A graduate in home economics from the University of Saskatchewan, she worked as a home economist for women's services of the university, lecturing to women's groups in the field of foods. During the war, she wrote articles on food and nutrition for Ukrainian language papers in Canada on behalf of the Consumer Informtion Service, Ottawa. She's the author of a book on Ukrainian embroideries, a pioneer of the Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada, which she headed for many years, and was a columnist in the Ukrainian Voice, Winnipeg at the time of publication of her outstanding book, Traditional Ukrainian Cookery, which is sold on Amazon.)The stories are engaging, written with a larger font, and in a style sure to appeal to young readers. The recipes and notes are, again, written in a style that will appeal to youngsters.Addendum: Children may enjoy other books on Ukrainian topics, which I've reviewed--many of them have images/photos taken by me in Ukraine. I didn't even bother to read more than 30% of the mess. On the plus side, it does provide a short list of names to use for further research, if that's your goal. Though the Amazon picture gives the impression of a 15 volume anthology, in reality, it might contain information from 15 short magazine articles. The editing appears to be near nonexistent, likely no one even proofread. Just... sad.

I am a true crime junkie - I've been reading true crime books since I was 10 and read "Helter Skelter" and I thought I'd heard/read about every serial killer there was. Nope - I read about quite a few cases I'd never heard of before in this collection. While Jack Rosewood doesn't go into depth, he tells you all the important points about the case. I've read other "snippet" books, where the author has done nothing but regurgitate information you can find out yourself by doing an internet search - not these! I truly enjoyed this collection and I think you will, too :)

No real background on the serial killers. Books very short. It felt like this could have been just one book, with a chapter devoted to each person.

A decent brief overview of a number of serial killers. I received a free download of the book in exchange for an honest review. I do not wish to discourage an aspiring writer especially since I hope to have some things I have written published and I'm sure my writing isn't perfect either. Unfortunately, The Serial Killer Books suffered from awkward attempts at nonlinear storytelling and a number of factual errors, including dates contradicted one paragraph to the next. A good editing and fact checking would greatly improve the book as many of the errors are just a need for a good reread of the work before publication to fix obvious typos, incorrect autocorrections and very awkwardly phrased passages. The author is obviously knowledgeable and interested in the subject but would be well served by a professional editor.

If you like true crime stories then you will enjoy this book. The stories are short but give you the information that you need. I had no idea there were so many serial killers in the world. I must admit I have found some typos in the the book but not enough to make me stop reading. Can't wait to start reading my next Rosewood book. Enjoy.

I enjoy reading true crime & try to read everything I get my hands on. This set of books was well written & researched. It talks about how the killers started out in life all the way to being caught & the punishment they received for the crimes committed.

I've been reading true crime novels since I was in high school (in the 80s), when one summer's day, I needed a book to read while suntanning by the pool, and my best friend handed me The Stranger Beside Me by Anne Rule. I assumed I'd pretty much read at least *something* about every serial killer - either by way of a book, or just falling down the rabbit hole of late night Wikipedia searches. I was surprised, and pleased, to learn how very wrong I was in this assumption! Jack Rosewood writes in a straight forward manner which I found very appealing, and at the end of each section there are smaller entries about others in the same genre (stranglers, spree killers, cannibals, etc.) including some lesser known serial killers, several of which I'd never heard of at all. I definitely and wholeheartedly recommend this box set for anyone who's interested in the grim, dark, and often incredibly sad (Eileen Wournos) side of human nature. Two thumbs way up!

This book is fantastic! The images are spectacular, it reads like a well-written magazine article, and it provides enough information to really understand what's going on, without feeling like a textbook. It has a solid backing in scientific and practical information, and I recommend it to everyone - just know what you're getting before you buy:1. This is a wonderful book about the human body. If you think the human body is offensive, do not buy this book. Yes, it has pictures of women giving birth. Yes, they're naked. If this offends you, I question your need for this book in the first place, but you might be happier with Watch Me Grow, which is sweet and informative, without subjecting you to the harsh reality of the human form. It would be quite a sacrifice in image quality, though. 3D ultrasound just doesn't compare to real optical photos.2. This was not written for your 5-year-old. This book assumes that its audience already knows where babies come from. This is a fantastic book that the whole family can enjoy together, but you may not want to leave the younger ones alone with it or you'll have some serious explaining to do. The more adult sections might help with "the talk" with your teen, but if your child believes a smiling stork will fly by and drop off a new sibling, keep this book in the top cabinet with the cleaning solvents.3. Some of the photos are old. This book has been in print for a long time. Lennart Nilsson has been doing his work for even longer. I was surprised at how many new images there were, but don't be alarmed when you see a few classics as well. No need for reservations - they are some of the most amazing.4. You are not supporting abortion by buying this book (as implied by some 1-star reviews). It is not a gallery of dead babies, it is a gallery of life in all its glory. On pg 326 it is explicitly stated that there are "no photographs of embryos or fetuses aborted by medical or surgical means." Some of the photos are indeed from miscarriages. Of course miscarriages are very sad, but what better way to honor these poor undeveloped individuals than to immortalize them in such a spectacular setting? In a way, these unfortunate souls accomplished more benefit to society in their few weeks of life than some do in many decades.If these five concepts do not bother you, you will fall in love with this book. It is everything a pregnancy book should be. It's a great buy not only for expectant parents, but for anyone who has ever been a fetus. Buy with confidence.

I received the original book many years ago when I was having my first child. I have been giving it as a gift ever since to colleagues, relatives or friends who are expecting. The new version has amazing pictures and excellent information on the growth of the baby. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the growth and development of a baby.

When I was a girl, my mom had an earlier version of this book. It was fascinating! There were so many pictures of the different stages of development. This newer version has fewer pictures. I bought it so my grandson could see what his baby brother “looks like” as he is growing in mommy’s tummy, but I think he will be bored with this book. I’m somewhat disappointed...

I absolutely loved this book! I feel like there are so many "novel" type pregnancy books out there but this is more of a science book. With photos and interesting to the point facts. It goes through every aspect of pregnancy, from start to finish. It was well written and beautifully documented. I highly recommend it!

This is a book I grew up with. As the oldest of six children there were lots of babies and baby books around the house. A Child is Born was a book I pored over as a child, exploring the miracle of birth as we excitedly awaited a new sibling. When I became pregnant with my first child this was the book I wanted first. My mother's original copy is long gone so I found this new, updated version. It has the same wonderful and updated information and beautiful photos. I only wish it were as big as the original copy we had as kids. This version is a bit smaller than the coffee table sized book we had. The larger scale just gives greater justice to the beauty of the photographs. This is the only book I've found that gives a full understanding of your baby's development at various stages without overwhelming detail. It's a great resource that I pull out regularly as we enter each new stage. It isn't full of baby advice, but rather follows the miracle of birth from a scientific point tracking development with beautifully detailed photographs.

I bought this book back in 1980 when I was pregnant with my daughter. She just found out she is pregnant and I gave it to her. Although the edition is a bit dated, 2003, (things like blood tests etc. aren't current), the photographs are amazing and facts are interesting. My daughter loves the book and I (still) do too.

I truly adore this book - back when my first son was born in 1982, I used it as a guide as to what was happening inside my body. The pictures are incredible and instructional; my three-year-old granddaughter is expecting twin siblings so we were looking through/discussing what was happening in mommy's body. It was great to have photos to show her/teach her with. Bodies are awesome - from conception to death. Enjoy!

Fantastic book. Had it during the 80s and it's still good today although upgrades have come to the market place. Better everything so more can be shown. I ordered one and received a kind of ratty copy of the original from that era. That's not what I had in mind when I ordered it. I'll wait a bit longer and order another one, better than the original. Doesn't pay to cut corners in some areas of a marketplace. :)

The sequences jump abruptly from the present to the past, unfolding careers through sometimes confused chronologies of competitions.
