Review

After years of anticolonial and post colonial theory, Feraoun's journal is truly refreshing to read. -- The New Republic, November 6, 2000Feraoun's Journal reads like a message in a bottle.... [It is] such a timely and timeless historical, political, literary, and human document. -- The Village Voice, January 10-16, 2001

From the Back Cover

Mouloud Feraoun was assassinated by a right wing French terrorist group, the Organisation Armee Secrete, just three days before the official cease-fire ended Algeria's eight-year battle for independence from France. However, not even the gunmen of the OAS could prevent Feraoun's journal from being published. Journal, 1955-1962 appeared posthumously in French in 1962 and remains the single most important account of everyday life in Algeria during decolonization.Feraoun was one of Algeria's leading writers. He was a friend of Albert Camus, Emmanuel Robles, Pierre Bourdieu, and other French and North African intellectuals. A committed teacher, he had dedicated his life to preparing Algeria's youth for a better future. As a Muslim and Kabyle writer, his reflections on the war in Algeria afford penetrating insights into the nuances of Algerian nationalism, as well as into complex aspects of intellectual, colonial, and national identity. Feraoun's Journal captures the heartbreak of a writer profoundly aware of the social and political turmoil of the time. This classic account, now available in English, should be read by anyone interested in the history of European colonialism and the tragedies of contemporary Algeria.

I gave this book five stars--I should point out that even in English it is difficult--perhaps the translators intention. For example often it is difficult to find the antecedent to a particular pronoun.I read this book first because it is one of the few I could find in English written by an Algerian (Feraoun was Kabyle and spoke no Arabic ironically) second because it is nuanced and though pro-FLN is not propaganda. I should state that after what my father told me he had witnessed at Setif in 1945 I am perfectly content with the most extreme condemnation of the French whose conduct makes any sanctimonious condemnation of "the brutality of Islam" a farce. (I should add the US follows the French --even to the point of having former French torturers train US army soldiers--this is verifiable ((see latest editition of The Question--by Alleg for verification)). Nevertheless I felt that the views of a "moderate"--and at the time one of Algeria's greatest writers should be respected--and indeed they complicate the whole problematic of the war--though not for me. I do not like propaganda and am not oblivious to the savagery of the war on both sides. But now more knowledable say about FLN's "brutality" my support for them has not wavered only grown. Anti-Colonial fighting is not a sentimental business and the FLN did things it should not have in my opinion. Having said that however it is well to remember that NONE of this would have happened had the French not decided to invade Algeria in 1830--had they not locked up whole communities in caves during the 19th century --and let them starve to death. Even Pontecorvo's great film does not present the real savagery of the French who are in the end responsible for ALL of the deaths of the Algerians between 1954-62 (1/9 of the whole muslim population) WHETHER OR NOT "indigenes" were killed by the liberation forces. It is the same in Iraq Afghanistan and Palestine.Feraoun--friend of Camus, lover of French culture--a man who deplored the few French "improvements" destroyed by the Liberation forces--a man who loved France and Algeria was murdered by the OAS three days before the war ceased.

That sentence from Mouloud Feraoun's JOURNAL, 1955-1962 summarizes the Algerian War of Independence as he experienced it. JOURNAL is one of the major, if lesser-known, eyewitness accounts of the political atrocities that marked the twentieth century. It belongs in the same group of books as Primo Levi's "If This Is a Man" and Eugenia Ginzburg's "Journey into the Whirlwind". Hitler's Holocaust and Stalin's Gulag are much better known, but for many Muslim Algerians caught up in the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962), life was almost as hellish.Feraoun lived through that maelstrom as a Muslim Berber from Kabylia. In November 1955 he began writing a journal from the maw of the War of Independence. He was one of the most respected writers in colonial Algeria and a friend of such noted figures as Emmanuel Robles and Albert Camus. He also was a schoolteacher, living in Fort-National, in the middle of Kabylia. In July 1957, due to the death and mayhem that had overwhelmed the Kabylie, Feraoun and his family moved to a suburb of Algiers. (That was during the Battle of Algiers, but still Algiers was safer, less violent, than was Kabylia.) Feraoun continued to live in the vicinity of Algiers until March 15, 1962, when he was assassinated by the fascist OAS just days before the cease-fire ending the French-Algerian war.Reading JOURNAL, 1955-1962 is profoundly depressing. It contains a litany of barbarities; it is a testament of inhumanity. Time and again, it documents physical torture. Example: A friend tells Feraoun: "What got me talking more than anything else is the spring * * *. It is a tool that is introduced into the anus and that increases in size when they push on the spring. Then they pull it out brutally, and you feel your entrails tear." Torture leads to false confessions, which lead to more arrests and more torture and more deaths. JOURNAL also documents psychological torture, both of individuals and of entire towns and, indeed, of all native Algerians.Who are the native Algerians? The French wanted to think that Algeria was part of France and that there were such people as "French Algerians". Feraoun would have none of that. "This people of eight million men is not French, and on its soil the French * * * are battling for the sole purpose of deciding the manner in which they are going to continue to impose their will upon it, to continue to live there, to continue to exploit and despise it, in the name of imperishable principles, in order to fulfill a highly civilizing mission."But Feraoun's world was not an either/or world. His implacable anti-colonialism did not place him in the camp of the FLN. In January 1956, he wrote: "The rebels' expectations are both excessive and disappointing. They include prohibitions of all kinds, nothing but prohibitions, dictated by the most obtuse fanaticism, the most intransigent racism, and the most authoritarian fist. In a way, this is true terrorism." In March 1956, he asked: "Can people who kill innocents in cold blood be called liberators? If so, have they considered for a moment that their 'violence' will engender more 'violence,' will legitimize it, and will hasten its terrible manifestation?"Curiously, JOURNAL, 1955-1962 was written in French. (Feraoun, who was born in 1913, was one of the Muslim elite of Algeria and he was educated within the French system. He also spoke Tamazight, the native Kabyle language, but he did not speak or write Arabic. There was, in fact, much friction and some violence between the Berbers and the Arabs, but Islam and anti-colonialist sentiments tended to unite the two groups. Certainly, the French looked down on and exploited both of them.) JOURNAL has long been known to be one of the seminal documents of the Algerian War of Independence. Alistair Horne lists it as one of his sources for his classic account of the War, "A Savage War of Peace". But it was only in 2000, with the publication of this volume, that it was made available in English.James D. Le Sueur, a French professor of history, contributes a useful forty-page introduction. In it, he compares Feraoun and his JOURNAL with Frantz Fanon and his "Wretched of the Earth". Le Sueur discusses how Feraoun and Fanon "held antithetical views on violence." "For Feraoun, the question was not whether violence could be used, when need be, as a response to colonial oppression but was a matter of when violence should stop and what the effects of violence were." Feraoun feared that the unrestrained, often unprincipled, violence of the FLN would result in a new "colonization" and a social environment that would breed yet more violence after independence. In this regard, Feraoun was prescient. Le Sueur concludes: "Because [Feraoun] was alive and writing throughout the war, his insights into the apocalyptic violence of decolonization are far more revealing than theories written about the conflict out of harm's way, especially the observations written by Fanon in 'The Wretched of the Earth' and celebrated by Sartre in his preface to that book."It is not always easy to follow Feraoun. Often his reactions to events happening around him -- in his town, outside his house on the street, to people he knows -- are raw. Sometimes his writing is impressionistic. Sometimes he is not altogether logical, and occasionally he contradicts himself. He often refers to people by a single initial, and one also has to deal with a kaleidoscopic alphabet stew of organizations -- FLN, SAS, ALN, CRUA, MNA, SAU, OAS, etc. But the book is not inordinately difficult, and it is very rewarding. Certainly any student of the Algerian War of Independence should read it.

There are a few important works on the Algerian Civil War available for the English reader. Franz Fannon, Alistair Horne's history, the film "Battle of Algiers, and recently Feraoun's diary are the ones that readily come to mind. Feraoun was a western educated Algerian and well accquainted with the French. His desire for an independent Algeria was strong, but tempered by a strong sense of historical reality. He reveals the day to day impact of the violence. It is in this respect that the work is most moving, and reveals the senselessness and degradation that occurs to all people involved, Feraoun eventually a victim himself. An essential view of the psychological costs of guerrilla and anti-colonial war.

I knew going in that this story was going to make me go through all the feels! The heroine, Anne had endured so much heartbreak in the past I was not sure how much more she could take. After six years, she was back in Oak Creek, Wyoming, divorced, broke, and just plain tired. Since she had nowhere to go it was a blessing when her late best friend’s mother left her a home in her will. She also had a fulfilling job lined up for her. Only two weeks in town, she is face to face with Zac, the person who basically ran her out of town. Years ago after her best friend’s funeral, after a night of drinking, Anne and Zac end up having sex. That night nearly destroyed her, the reaction from Zac was so heartbreaking, Anne had to leave the only place she knew and start over elsewhere. When the two meet again, Zac does not react well and Anne is reminded of all that occurred six years prior. Zac does not fully remember exactly what happened but he was horrified of what he might have done to cause such fear he saw in her face. When finally all is revealed, Zac knows he cannot erase what happened but wants to move forward with the “now Zac and now Anne.”As difficult as it was for me to get passed what happened between Zac and Anne that night, I loved how patient Zac was. He had a terrible loss of his wife and son and he has not had a fulfilling relationship since then but he was ready with Anne. Even though he was happily married with Becky, he always had a soft spot for Anne. So when he realized what had happened in the past between them and what she was going through currently, he did everything he could to make life a little easier for her. As for Anne, as hard as she fought to hide her feelings for Zac, it could not be contained after such a painful loss of her only true friend and family. As I read this story, I found that they really were destined for each other. I think Becky would have given her blessing, there was one particular scene that really resonated this. The suspense portion of this book really kept my attention, I swore I knew who the bad guy was in this, but I was taken by surprise when the the villain was revealed. Anne comes across as weak on the outside, but she has this inner strength that shines through, especially when it is really needed. This book was a great introduction to a new to me author. I cannot wait to read the next books in this series.

I love military book, or private security books, what can I say I’m a sucker for a hot guy with skills. This isn’t exactly a second chance romance, but close enough to work for me.Zac used to be in the military and is now one of the owners of Linear Tactical, a company that teaches all kind of security skills and tactics and survival skills. He’s a good guy, good friend, hard worker. He has a sad past, his wife and young son both died in a car accident. By the time this book starts a lot of time has past and he’s managed to move on. The thing is that is something that haunts him. Anne. The woman who was best friends with his wife, who he slept with after she died. When Anne shows up back in town as the new ER doc she’s more than a little broken. Her husband left her for a younger more personable woman. She’s back in the town where she was invisible. And oh year she knows at some point she’s going to have to see Zac, the man who really broke her. Zac never expected to find that Anne was afraid of him when they see each other again but she is. I felt so much for Anne. I wanted her to get a happy ending, to feel loved and accepted. Frankly I just wanted to wrap her up in a giant band aide. The thing I loved about this book is how Zac is a good guy, and he seriously wants to fix whatever happened with him and Anne. I love that he’s not afraid of it, that he doesn’t want to leave it unaddressed. Throughout the whole book he’s patient and kind and sweet. He never tries to force her into anything, he’s never overly pushy, he just wants to be around her in whatever way she is okay with. He really is a great hero in this book.I will say there is some serious triggers for people is violence against women is hard for you to read. I didn’t feel like it was over down or gratuitous, don’t get me wrong it was hard to read, but it was necessary for the story and I felt like it was well done. This book had everything I wanted: a great love story, good secondary characters, solid storyline, just a great beginning to a series. I look forward to the next one.

J: This one was just OK. 75% of the story was mostly relationship drama and way too much sex. The main characters jumped back in to bed too soon. Annie did a "too stupid to live" when she knew about the rapist. And the real action didn't start until the last 30 pages. I read Eagle first and loved it but this one, not so much.

Love this story of second chances, grief, loss, coping, and hot, sexy love!Anne is back in her home town after a divorce that left her broke and scarred. She's a brilliant doctor, but with low self confidence due to her stutter, and also because she knows she's going to run into the one person she doesn't want to see again, Zac. He's her deceased best friend's husband, and they had a falling out that she still hasn't recovered from.Zac has built his life back up after losing his wife, but when he sees that Anne is back in town, it throws him for a loop. He knows they didn't part on good terms years ago, but he can't remember exactly what he said or did to her b/c he was wasted. Now that they live in this tiny town together, he wants to make things right with her. Easier said than done though b/c Anne is super skittish. Oh and for extra drama, there's a violent criminal haunting the small town that Zac and Anne must avoid (love it!)This book had me hooked from the first page. The backstory and history b/w Zac and Anne was so moving. And their journey to getting to know one another again and developing something more was crazy good! So much heat and tension and hesitation and steam. And the added element of the mystery criminal was so compelling. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading. This book is full of twists and turns, as well as heartwarming moments and sexy scenes. Definitely recommend to any romance or romantic suspense lover!

PreSchool-Grade 2-The alliterative, rhyming text features each letter of the alphabet in sequence and is accompanied by attractive watercolors of racing scenes. Each page's text focuses on some aspect of the sport and an often-repeated letter (e.g., "Helmets holding heads"). While clever, the writing is occasionally stilted due to the requirements of the setup. Realistic, double-page paintings depict a variety of authentic racers, including Formula 1, Indy/CART, sports cars, and stock cars, which progress chronologically, with early models at the start and modern ones following. Almost all the drivers and officials are white men, but spectators are a diverse crowd and the doctor treating an injury is a woman. Endpapers illustrate each of the machines depicted and identify them by year, make, and model. Similar in concept to Anne Miranda's Vroom, Chugga, Vroom-Vroom (Turtle, 1998), Floca's book is more appealing due to its superior illustrations and their faithfulness to real racecars.Jeffrey A. From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. Floca's picture-book tribute to auto racing looks simple, but many things are going on at once. There is, of course, a race. Also, the alphabetical text often uses alliterative phrases, providing functional fare for phonetics fanatics and fun for everyone else. And finally, each turn of the page represents a time shift. Although a single race appears to proceed throughout the book, the cars, drivers, tracks, and spectators change considerably from the book's opening in 1901, when a Ford chugs along a country road, to the conclusion in 2001, when a Ferrari takes its victory lap around an immense racetrack. Large in scale, the ink-and-watercolor artwork is bold enough to share with a story hour or classroom group, yet young racing fans will find the details absorbing. Floca's introductory note on the history of racing may interest them as well. The clean, spacious book design is thoughtfully planned, right down to the end papers, which show different views of the cars and drivers. An appealing picture book on an unusual subject. Brian Floca is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors! His books are wonderfully illustrated, and my two-year-old son seems to love them! We have this book and Moonshot, and I plan on adding the Lightship book, as well.Even thought Alphabet is in the title, Floca doesn't follow the A is for... that you find in most books. Instead, he takes a very alliterative approach (i.e. Curves across the course cause cars to careen and crash...). Any boy (or girl) that is into cars would LOVE this book. I highly recommend it.

My son is only 10 months old and I was a little reluctant to get this book at first because I thought it would be too much of a "let's learn the alphabet" book. However, it is nothing of the sort. While not a rhyming book its clever mix of consonance, assonance, onomatopoeia and surely other literary devices that elude me, make it seem almost poetic.Leaving the high-brow behind, this book has numerous strengths -- it has an above average size which makes for big, dramatic illustrations; it has a fantastic read-aloud quality due to its profoundly thoughtful word choice; it has a lot of subtle things going on with the evolution of the racecar, etc; finally, it is just plain fun. If it didn't have alphabet in the title you might not even notice the whole alphabet thing going on -- it definitely doesn't try to be an educational book or to force feed kids learning.I couldn't recommend it more highly for children no matter how young.

Kids love the illustrations, and parents love the different take on a alphabet book. Each page also has cars numbered 1-26 to go along with the corresponding letter of the alphabet it's on. It's a fun addition on each page that kids like looking for. Overall great book.

Bought this for my race crazy husband for fathers day. It's accurately and beautifully illustrated, uses creative vocabulary and is a cohesive story. None of this A is for ____ crap. My daughter loves it because it's beautiful and fun to read. My husband loves it and I love it for it's accuracy to racing legacy. We have even ordered a couple as gifts for friends.

Grandkids love this one for reading before bed.

My son brought this home from his school library so many times I bought him a copy. He's in kindergarten and loves race cars. This is not your average ABC book but rather a beautifully illustrated, fun book about racing that just happens to be ordered by letter.

The Racecar Alphabet does a clever job of showing a racing scene for each letter. Scenes are of historic races, cars, and people, so this is a book that I enjoyed as well. Each letter's phrases are as alliterative as possible; some work better than others.I recommend this as a cute book that fathers can read to their children in order to start them on the road to becoming the Formula One World Champion!

I was delighted when I received this book. It is big and beautifuly illustrated and perfect for my three year old grandson. I wanted a book to go with the race are and plastic helmet we picked up for him at the Indianapolis Speedway museum and this is great. They should sell these in their shop!
