Review

“[R]omance, danger, and magic make for a winning combination that will keep readers glued to the pages long after bedtime.” –School Library Journal "A multifaceted scheme, mistaken identity, and a simmering romance will keep readers riveted and dying to know how it all unfolds. The exploration of the land’s religion and people’s conflicting understandings of it seems to be a reflection of the real world, lending the story a deeper commentary without sidelining the main plot. An excellent choice for fans of smart, independent female leads, intriguing fantasy worlds, and a race against the clock to defeat evil." –Booklist "The plot is breathlessly fast, complete with creepy spirits, a satisfying romance, and complex but clear political twists and turns....Political, romantic, magical, timely, yet also traditionally appealing." –Kirkus "[A] riveting read....rife with surprising twists....This novel is a well-developed page-turner that will have fans of both the fantasy and mystery genres rushing to finish." –Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books "Debut author Smith explores the power of sacrifice in this darkly romantic reimagining of the Brothers Grimm’s 'The Goose Girl.'" –Publishers WeeklyEarly praise for Bloodleaf: “Enchanting, visceral, and twisty, Bloodleaf  is a phantasmagorical wonder that will keep you guessing until the very last page.”–NYT bestselling author of Ash Princess, Laura Sebastian   “Eerie, immersive, and fascinating, Bloodleaf  feels like a classic in the making. I've read a ton of Young Adult fantasy. More than 90% of the books I own/read are in the fantasy genre. Which comes to mean that I see a lot of the same elements over and over again in fantasy books. It's not a bad thing, not at all, but it's also refreshing when I read a fantasy book with unique elements. Bloodleaf is one of those books. Bloodleaf has many unique fantasy elements that I absolutely loved. This dark and luscious tale will have you hooked from the first page. Smith’s writing blew me away. It was breathtakingly beautiful and nevertheless bewitching. I was captivated by the words that flew off the pages and made the world feel so real. The world Smith has built is phenomenal and deadly and all the while enchanting. It’s a fantasy world I could easily picture myself living in. The world is illustrated in such beautiful prose. And just to be clear, this isn’t a fantasy world where happy endings come naturally. It’s a dark world filled with daunting dangers and betrayal. But the way Smith describes the world is what makes me love it so much; the descriptions are not too much or too little and they make it feel like the world is alive, which is always a plus for me in fantasy novels. What I also loved about Bloodleaf was the magic system. The magic system in Bloodleaf is incredible. To enter the second kingdom, Renalt, you must have a stamped invitation with the king’s blood to enter, or else you risk the possibility of death. This experience that Aurelia has to go through is so well-captured that I felt like I was right there seeing her cross into the kingdom. Actually, that’s what it was like for the whole book. The story, the characters, the hardships, all felt real and that is something I look for in books. I want the worlds to feel real to me and this world and the characters did not disappoint.Princess Aurelia is a wonderfully flawed, yet strong character. She doesn't want to do the blood magic oath, where her and three people she loves bound themselves to her with blood, where in order for Aurelia to die, her three protectors will have to die first. She would rather die than risk the lives of those she loves. But then the blood oath is completed and Aurelia goes on a daunting journey, using the name of one of her maids, to escape the Tribunal after she uses her forbidden magic to save someone. She fights for her old life, for her destiny, and for her kingdom. She learns so much throughout her journey, and I can't wait to see where her journey takes her in the second book. And then there is Zan. Zan is a character I was easily swooning over. He's intriguing yet mysterious and though he hides many secrets from Aurelia, he becomes someone she can't live without. He's charming even when he's trying not to be. He overall fights for a good cause and wants to see the world change. And he sees Aurelia as being that person, with her magic and her will to change the outcome of her life.Overall, Bloodleaf has easily become one of my all-time favorite fantasy novels. I loved the world, the character development (even the sad moments), and the uniqueness Smith brings to the fantasy genre. I’m one of the readers that is patiently (well, really, impatiently) waiting for the second book. If you are looking for a fantasy read that is gripping and intriguing with multiple fantasy elements, then Bloodleaf is a great book to read!

I went into Crystal Smith’s Bloodleaf with very little knowledge on what it was about, other than a magical YA fantasy, one of my favorite kinds! Not only that, but it’s also a retelling of the fairy tale The Goose Girl. It’s been years since I’ve read that story from the Brothers Grimm, so I basically went into this one with no clue to what the general story was about! With a bit of rough start, it wasn’t too long before I became engrossed with the words flowing off the pages as I journeyed with our heroine, Aurelia as she tries to save her kingdom.Aurelia is a princess with magical talents, and in this world, magical talents usually leads to a quick and painful death, but since she is the princess, her mother has been able to hide her talents over the years. But now it is time for her to go to her betrothed across the lands and marry him. Aurelia was forced to reveal her powers in order to save the life of someone dear to her and basically exposed herself as a magic user. So she with her brother, and guard, ex-best friend and her father flee into the night. But more trouble and chaos ensues and it’s not long before Aurelia is left for dead, her guard gone, her brother taken by her ex-friend and father. She is left with no one.Aurelia isn’t the type of princess to wait to be saved though, she ventures onto the kingdom where she is supposed to be headed. She wants to rescue her younger brother despite his animosity towards her. Aurelia assumes the identity of her maid who she was fond of and it’s not long before she meets Zan, the cousin to the crown prince, the man she is supposed to be marring. Zan needs her help with something magical as he was soon to learn she possessed such abilities.Something is happening in the kingdom and Zan is trying to keep the barriers in place in order to protect it and everyone inside. He believes that Aurelia is the one to do just that.I’m really wanting to go back and read The Goose Girl now! I know I read another version of a retelling of that one years ago, but it’s been sooo long since then and I don’t even have that particular book anymore. But I’m always curious about the fairy tales that retellings come from, especially when they are unfamiliar ones. I love knowing the origins behind a retelling, no matter its form.Bloodleaf was an interesting read. I will admit, I got off to a rough start with trying to understand the new world I was entering and the history that I would eventually learn played a key part in the story. While I can’t remember all of it in the beginning real well, it was nice that despite that, in the end, things were made very clear. There were just a few magical aspects that were confusing for me in the middle of the story, mostly pertaining to what Zan needed of Aurelia in regards to the magical wall. Even though I struggled to grasp what things were, I was able to follow along fairly well in that regard. This story wasn’t without it surprises either. Oh my goodness, there were surprising reveals and events left and right! It was mind-boggling! But in the best possible way! I love a story that will keep you guessing ad take you utterly by surprise long before it’s over! This book definitely kept me on my toes, that’s for sure1And what’s a fairy tale without a little romance? Naturally, we see something happening between Aurelia and Zan. I liked that it wasn’t a love at first sight kind of deal, which is common in fairy tales. No, these two were actually not overly fond with one another when they first meet. And I have to say that that is my favorite kind of meetings! I love it when they don’t love each other right away! But it’s not long before the animosity turns into friendship, and then later on, something much more, naturally! The ending was quite the surprise as well! I naturally, forgot key details when something was happening and was completely blindsided by the end that happened! Just wow! I kept telling myself that this was a trilogy, but even that didn’t help because trilogies can sometimes involve other characters, as we all know! I will be curious to see what Crystal does next with this particular trilogy though. I felt like we were practically at that beloved "happily ever after" even though the words didn't appear, but it was fairly close I felt like. Perhaps the tiniest of threads that might be considered loose, will be the catalyst for the next two books. Only time will tell of course!Bloodleaf was a unique and thrilling tale all on its own, but knowing that it stemmed from a fairy tale made it even more delightful! In true fairy tale fashion there was quite the heaping of darkness throughout the tale. The Brothers Grimm would truly be proud to have inspired such a remarkable tale from debut author, Crystal Smith. This is sure to be only the start to an amazing trilogy to come and I for one cannot wait to see what will happen next! Bloodleaf is the perfect read for fans of such fairy tale retellings or readers of the fantasy genre in general!Overall Rating 4/5 stars

Meh. It was super predictable - the big plot twists, how it was going to end, all of it. The character’s relationships with each other didn’t ring true, and their motivation was generically self interested, unless they supported the main character’s action to move the plot forward. The two different kingdoms weren’t really different - except one was tolerant of “magic” and the other wasn’t. Unless I was missing something. The first third of the book held the most potential, then it just didn’t keep my interest at the same level, which was disappointing.None of the characters really stood out, the indignation that should have followed specific parts of the story just weren’t kindled in me. The treatment of the first death of the main character’s closest friend, after professing love for her, didn’t ring true. Nor was the fact that the main character just easily moved on... or question that fact that she never saw his ghost...Overall, the story had a lot of potential but the execution was meh...

Love the world building...incredible story....could not putdown, ended up reading the entire book in one day! I read alot of YA Fantasy books....and this one was a very rare treat! Imagine my surprise when I found out this beautiful written book was written by a fellow Utahn! Can not wait for the book!

Best book I’ve read this year. Wow! I can’t wait for the next book to come out. This author is amazing. I bet it becomes as popular as the Harry Potter series. A must read.

I'm frequently baffled by high reviews of mediocre books. This book deserves its full 5 stars. The plot alone was a breath of fresh air as an avid reader who is aways looking for another compelling read. THIS IS IT. Best book of 2019.

The Rabbit Who Wants to Fall Asleep: A New Way of Getting Children to Sleep, by Carl-Johan Forssén Ehrlin

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—Roger the Rabbit cannot fall asleep. His father has nodded off, as have his siblings. His mother suggests that she and Roger take a walk to visit Uncle Yawn, "who was the world's kindest wizard and who lived just on the other side of the meadow." Written with a specific language pattern based on psychological techniques, this rather verbose picture book offers harried and desperate parents the promise of a magical story that will soothe their children to sleep, while offering relaxation and mindfulness techniques to help children take control of their thoughts and prepare for slumber. The artwork is mediocre and does not enhance the text. But according to the author's note in the front of the book, the artwork matters little; Ehrlin tells parents that "it is best if the child is lying down while listening, instead of looking at the pictures, so that he or she can relax even more." Ultimately, the book is instructional and didactic, specifically written for children who experience great difficulty winding down at the end of the day. VERDICT Most people should stick with the bedtime classics that soothe and calm, such as Margaret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon, Mem Fox's Time for Bed, or Peggy Rathman's Goodnight Gorilla.—Lisa Kropp, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY

This is a really interesting book. Apparently, the sounds and emphasis on certain words is supposed to be soothing. I know that my five month old daughter loves when I read it to her, I am not sure if that is the sound of my voice or the words that I am using.

I just heard about the book and ordered the hardcopy.A short while later I was informed by my spouse that my two little ones were still up and amped for their first day of school (tomorrow), so I added the Kindle version and downloaded it for immediate help.Note: Reading on an iPad in a dark room created its own distraction. Not recommended. I'll use this version when we travel and use the hardcopy at home. The book has you insert your child's name in, so I used the more active and harder-to-sleep one's name. The forward suggests that it might take a few reads to get the pattern down and warns of unusual phrasings in the book which is certainly true. The book is a lot longer than I thought it would be and the way the iPad breaks it up I kept thinking the book was over, when a new section would start. This should allow easy stopping points on later to check on the kiddos and end the book if they are out.It took almost the whole book, but mine were out - and the one that never falls asleep first (whose name I was using throughout) was sleeping first.I downloaded the book while they were running up and down the hallway, 20min later I typed this review.

I started this book for the first time a week ago. It not only DID NOT WORK AT ALL, but it pulled the energy out of my 7 yr old. She was highly annoyed by the book and said it was dumb, made no sense, and stop saying my name!!! It really is written in a weird way but I don't think it's poor grammar or bad translation, I think it's just worded in the best way to lure kids into sleep. I was really upset, I want my free time back! But I told myself I didn't give it a fair shot.. we were very busy leading up to it, she had just watched tv and then listened to me frantically try and hunt down this book in a pile of holiday stuff with bright lights on and shouting from room to room. Of course it didn't work. Tonight though, it worked immediately 3 pages in! She was sound asleep! We didn't do screen time before bed just a movie night till 30 min before bed and then she snuck on her kindle for a bit. I had to literally pull it from her!! She insisted she wasn't going to listen to my stories. I read her a new Amelia Bedelia book (chapter book)and then moved to the bunny book. She said NOOOOO and covered her ears and said she was not cooperating. I said if you're still awake at the end I'll toss you in your own bed and you can do what you want in bed. So she had incentive NOT to sleep really! Well she did. It was a miracle and I kissed the book. I seriously kissed it.

I have this in cd form for my son's room, and the audiobook downloaded so we can take it with us when we travel. It is amazing. I think the actual book itself would not be as magical, since it would mean I have to open it and read the words, which means a light on, and my voice, which may or may not be as soothing. BUT, the audio versions - 5 stars - or 10 stars - or 100 stars. I have done yoga over many years, and this book is basically a meditation but using a basic children's story. I use this audio cd for my son at night for the past 2 years (started when he was 3, now is 5.) It puts him to sleep, but more so - it calms him down. If there is a lot of hyper going on in the room, I can turn this on and it immediately mellows him out and any other child with him. It's magic. I use it also for myself if I am having trouble falling asleep, lots on my mind - I turn this on and it's magic. I don't think I've ever gotten to the second reader (the audio version has the book read twice - first by a man, second by a woman.) It is very mellow. The first narrator is better, in my opinion, because he speaks more calmly and in a deeper voice. But that might be personal preference, and it's great to have both options on the same cd and on the audible download. I have recommended this cd to many people for their kids, and even for themselves. It's magic.

This book was amazing. Granted, I have only used it once so far, but it was even worth the price for one blissful bedtime routine. My kids have NEVER fallen asleep while we read to them, not a ONE. They usually fall asleep after a couple stories, another trip to the bathroom, a sip of water, etc etc etc. It can take a while! Last night all THREE kids fell asleep before I had finished half of the book. Amazing!

This book is so over the top contrived with its "I'm going to make you fall asleep" storyline and its condescending "sleep now, child" tone that, even if it worked on my crazy 3 year old, I may have still taken it out back and beaten it for talking to my child the way it did.But I didn't even have to choose between sleep and dignity for this dumpster fire of a book since it ended with my son adamantly refusing to buy into it's message and running around his room yelling, "no sleep!" like a mad man.Save your money and just read a book your child actually enjoys in a slow, creepy, douchey way. If it works, cool, you can just do that from now on. If it doesn't, and consequently pisses your child off, I'm pretty sure this book is going to do that one hundred-fold.

My 2 year old struggles with bedtime. This was certainly not a magic bullet the first few times we read it... but that changed. After the first few nights, he started asking for it at bedtime. Now he's out like a light by the end of the book. It seems to be more effective as he understands more and more of the language used in the book, and also gets better as we have become more accustomed to the book's tone and rhythm. My biggest complaint is probably the book's biggest strength - it's boring. The artwork is minimal, it's very wordy, and the paperback version is not easy for my kid to hold himself. Those are all probably good things, though, for a bedtime book.**UPDATE**After a month or so the magic just stopped. Like dead stop, no taper, no warning, just POOF. Now it's just a boring book that neither entertains nor tires out my kid.
