From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—Roger the Rabbit cannot fall asleep. His father has nodded off, as have his siblings. His mother suggests that she and Roger take a walk to visit Uncle Yawn, "who was the world's kindest wizard and who lived just on the other side of the meadow." Written with a specific language pattern based on psychological techniques, this rather verbose picture book offers harried and desperate parents the promise of a magical story that will soothe their children to sleep, while offering relaxation and mindfulness techniques to help children take control of their thoughts and prepare for slumber. The artwork is mediocre and does not enhance the text. But according to the author's note in the front of the book, the artwork matters little; Ehrlin tells parents that "it is best if the child is lying down while listening, instead of looking at the pictures, so that he or she can relax even more." Ultimately, the book is instructional and didactic, specifically written for children who experience great difficulty winding down at the end of the day. VERDICT Most people should stick with the bedtime classics that soothe and calm, such as Margaret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon, Mem Fox's Time for Bed, or Peggy Rathman's Goodnight Gorilla.—Lisa Kropp, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY

This is a really interesting book. Apparently, the sounds and emphasis on certain words is supposed to be soothing. I know that my five month old daughter loves when I read it to her, I am not sure if that is the sound of my voice or the words that I am using.

I just heard about the book and ordered the hardcopy.A short while later I was informed by my spouse that my two little ones were still up and amped for their first day of school (tomorrow), so I added the Kindle version and downloaded it for immediate help.Note: Reading on an iPad in a dark room created its own distraction. Not recommended. I'll use this version when we travel and use the hardcopy at home. The book has you insert your child's name in, so I used the more active and harder-to-sleep one's name. The forward suggests that it might take a few reads to get the pattern down and warns of unusual phrasings in the book which is certainly true. The book is a lot longer than I thought it would be and the way the iPad breaks it up I kept thinking the book was over, when a new section would start. This should allow easy stopping points on later to check on the kiddos and end the book if they are out.It took almost the whole book, but mine were out - and the one that never falls asleep first (whose name I was using throughout) was sleeping first.I downloaded the book while they were running up and down the hallway, 20min later I typed this review.

I started this book for the first time a week ago. It not only DID NOT WORK AT ALL, but it pulled the energy out of my 7 yr old. She was highly annoyed by the book and said it was dumb, made no sense, and stop saying my name!!! It really is written in a weird way but I don't think it's poor grammar or bad translation, I think it's just worded in the best way to lure kids into sleep. I was really upset, I want my free time back! But I told myself I didn't give it a fair shot.. we were very busy leading up to it, she had just watched tv and then listened to me frantically try and hunt down this book in a pile of holiday stuff with bright lights on and shouting from room to room. Of course it didn't work. Tonight though, it worked immediately 3 pages in! She was sound asleep! We didn't do screen time before bed just a movie night till 30 min before bed and then she snuck on her kindle for a bit. I had to literally pull it from her!! She insisted she wasn't going to listen to my stories. I read her a new Amelia Bedelia book (chapter book)and then moved to the bunny book. She said NOOOOO and covered her ears and said she was not cooperating. I said if you're still awake at the end I'll toss you in your own bed and you can do what you want in bed. So she had incentive NOT to sleep really! Well she did. It was a miracle and I kissed the book. I seriously kissed it.

I have this in cd form for my son's room, and the audiobook downloaded so we can take it with us when we travel. It is amazing. I think the actual book itself would not be as magical, since it would mean I have to open it and read the words, which means a light on, and my voice, which may or may not be as soothing. BUT, the audio versions - 5 stars - or 10 stars - or 100 stars. I have done yoga over many years, and this book is basically a meditation but using a basic children's story. I use this audio cd for my son at night for the past 2 years (started when he was 3, now is 5.) It puts him to sleep, but more so - it calms him down. If there is a lot of hyper going on in the room, I can turn this on and it immediately mellows him out and any other child with him. It's magic. I use it also for myself if I am having trouble falling asleep, lots on my mind - I turn this on and it's magic. I don't think I've ever gotten to the second reader (the audio version has the book read twice - first by a man, second by a woman.) It is very mellow. The first narrator is better, in my opinion, because he speaks more calmly and in a deeper voice. But that might be personal preference, and it's great to have both options on the same cd and on the audible download. I have recommended this cd to many people for their kids, and even for themselves. It's magic.

This book was amazing. Granted, I have only used it once so far, but it was even worth the price for one blissful bedtime routine. My kids have NEVER fallen asleep while we read to them, not a ONE. They usually fall asleep after a couple stories, another trip to the bathroom, a sip of water, etc etc etc. It can take a while! Last night all THREE kids fell asleep before I had finished half of the book. Amazing!

This book is so over the top contrived with its "I'm going to make you fall asleep" storyline and its condescending "sleep now, child" tone that, even if it worked on my crazy 3 year old, I may have still taken it out back and beaten it for talking to my child the way it did.But I didn't even have to choose between sleep and dignity for this dumpster fire of a book since it ended with my son adamantly refusing to buy into it's message and running around his room yelling, "no sleep!" like a mad man.Save your money and just read a book your child actually enjoys in a slow, creepy, douchey way. If it works, cool, you can just do that from now on. If it doesn't, and consequently pisses your child off, I'm pretty sure this book is going to do that one hundred-fold.

My 2 year old struggles with bedtime. This was certainly not a magic bullet the first few times we read it... but that changed. After the first few nights, he started asking for it at bedtime. Now he's out like a light by the end of the book. It seems to be more effective as he understands more and more of the language used in the book, and also gets better as we have become more accustomed to the book's tone and rhythm. My biggest complaint is probably the book's biggest strength - it's boring. The artwork is minimal, it's very wordy, and the paperback version is not easy for my kid to hold himself. Those are all probably good things, though, for a bedtime book.**UPDATE**After a month or so the magic just stopped. Like dead stop, no taper, no warning, just POOF. Now it's just a boring book that neither entertains nor tires out my kid.
