This is the bible for golfers who want to learn to have a better mindset when playing and practicing the game. If you find yourself getting worked up during a round of golf, or feel like your game is stagnating, this book can help get your mind right. Well-written and straightforward I recommend this book to anyone who takes the game seriously (maybe too seriously). I learned that the way to improving my game was not in perfecting the golf swing but in improving my thinking and emotions on the course.

Bought this for my 14 year old to help him tackle the mental side of the game. He's enjoying the read and says he's got some good stuff out of it. My understanding is that is is written petty plainly and directly with many annectdotes and examples from famous golfers. He's not a big reader, but this seems to be one for him.

The pro at my course recommended this book to me. A nice reminder that the game of golf will always win and we can have a good game but it won't be perfect. Some of the chapters were better than others at soothing me after a not so good game. The best chapter, in my opinion, was the about how to practice.

As a 21 handicap the weakest point of my game has always been mental. My practice sessions were focused on long irons/driver, and to a smaller degree putting, with a little short game thrown in. I analyzed and tweaked my game during the round based on what the previous shot did, and couldn't help but get *upset* when the inevitable triple bogeys came along.I now rarely get upset over a bad shot, never practice putting, never practice long irons, haven't changed anything about my swing/grip, and am playing the best golf of my life. I love his simple mental approach when you're playing a round.I restrict any analysis/tweaking of my game now strictly to the driving range.

Book is perfect. I will read this book many times because it hits a chord in golf, life and overall thoughts. I really enjoyed the stories and the advice. I hated to read the last page but am eager to read it again for some reason. My son is a soccer player and we discuss routines in his sport, training techniques and balance. I have read him sections and we talk about them back and forth and we end with something we are doing or going to do, which brings a smile as we drift off into our own thoughts.

Using positive visualization to set your mind right to put you in the position to succeed. Practice with a purpose. Don’t just pound balls. Focus on speed on greens hitting to collars and making chips and putts when you practice. Doesn’t matter how easy or short the chip or putt is. Just make them. Then later focus on your 135 and In wedge game. Hit different types of shots. Make those priorities. Then practice the long clubs that are the ones that absolutely give you supreme confidence that you will execute the best shot in play. Most time should be spent on putting chipping and wedge play.

I've taken golf lessons for years, but haven't been able to break through. I bought this book this winter hoping to see if I could develop a new approach to the game. I was so impressed with the book that I've read two other Dr. Rotella books since. I also recommended it to a golfing buddy. With the extended spring, I haven't been able to see if there are any effects. But I certainly am taking a much different approach as I head into this spring.

Very interesting. I found myself applying the theories not only to me, but also my playing partners. I will be reading this book a second and even a third time to improve my attitude towards the game of golf.

This book is simply amazing. I have tried reading about book by Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange but it was a little too much for my brain. I found this one easy to read (for the most part) and it could be a life changing book for many. It gives information about death, purgatory, hell and heaven that I have never read before, and I have read much about these topics from great authors. I thought I wasn't too interested in heaven (because we all want to get there anyway) but I was very interested in purgatory (as usual!) - and this has taught me a great deal about heaven that I never knew about. This book fills me with hope, and a strong desire to pursue holiness even more. How I wish this was preached everywhere and all the time! This would release souls from purgatory by our sacrifices, and help many to be saved! Fantastic read.

Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange has written an excellent treatise on the four last things. The book is broken up into 5 sections- the present life, death & judgement, hell, heaven, and purgatory. The first section deals with man. What is out final cause or our raison d'etre? Of course, it is to be united with God for all eternity. How does this life prepare us for our final ends? We grow in charity while meriting in this life. As Garrigou-Lagrange is famous for, he discusses how we are called to become holy and totally purified in this life, bypassing purgatory and going straight to heaven. The second section of the book has to do with death and judgement. There are no second chances and where we end up is permanent. Fr G-L gives reasons for why this is the case and how it works practically. Wouldn't we realize that we had made the wrong decision by going to hell, and hence change our minds and decide to love God? No, for we do not undergo change after death. We cannot learn anything new and hence, nothing can "come to light" that would convince us to want to turn back towards God. We may be sorry that we are suffering, but we will not feel remorse or true sorrow for sin. Then there is the section on hell. Discussions of hell are always difficult to read, and this is no exception. Fr G-L discusses the pain of loss and the pain of sense. We will feel a deep burning pain at knowing that we have not fulfilled our ends as human beings, that we have been reduced to a mere shadow of what we were meant to be. This is a pain far worse than the pain of sense, even though the pain of sense is beyond anything that anyone has ever experienced in this life. Terrifying. Why screw around with sin? Father G-L also discusses whether or not there are literal flames in hell. The opinion of many theologians seems to be "yes." Again, terrifying. The section on Purgatory was also quite scary. It is less well known how deeply painful purgatory is as well. The primary pain from purgatory comes from the fact that we know we will see God, and we desire to see him so much. As Fr G-L explains, though in one sense teh pains of purgatory are comparable to the pains of hell, there is also a certain sweetness to the pains of purgatory because you know that through these pains you are becoming more holy and close to God. Fr G-L is careful to note, however, that one cannot merit in purgatory, which is why we need to be perfected in this life. If I am purged from all my attachments to sin in this life, I will merit for myself and others. However, if I am purged in purgatory, those pains that I suffer shall not be meritorious. This illustrates just how important it is to be perfected in this life. The final section on heaven was very exciting. Fr G-L discusses that which brings us our eternal bliss primarily; namely, God. But secondarily, we will experience immense joy and intimacy with each other, especially those that we knew here on earth. That was something that I was very excited to hear because while I realize God alone is our final ends, I always hoped that there would still be some sort of "interaction" with those that I loved on earth as well as the blessed I have never met. We will also be aware of the doings here on earth of loved ones and be involved in their journey. Finally, Fr G-L discusses the number of the elect. What I like so much about his style is that even though he discusses that the majority of theologians historically have said that the number of the reprobate probably are greater than the number of the elect, he is not dogmatic about it in saying a that we must believe this. He also discusses the popular opinion that the number of the elect IN the Catholic Church is probably GREATER than the number of reprobate in the Catholic Church. That was a very cool thing to hear, and I wish we'd hear that more. He also discusses the possibility of those outside the Church being saved (of course, they would be in invincible ignorance). The book ends with an epilogue. It begins with a great lament concerning those who have traded the ways of God for their own intellect (as Mark Shea would say, worshiping the intellect). Fr G-L introduces the 3 personality types based on our 3 duties to God- that is, to know, love, and serve him. These correspond to those who whose primary mode of spirituality is through the intellect, the will, and daily ritual, respectively. He gives examples of saints in history who can be classified in each one of the spiritual types. He discusses the positive aspects of each of these spiritual types as well as the common traps that each of them are more prone to falling into. Of course, the goal is to have a balance between all 3.Everything by Fr G-L is the greatest thing ever. If you are interested in a book on teh last things, there is no reason to read anyone else. He is by far the most trustworthy theologian of the 20th century.

In the midst of the tumultuous times before and after the Council, Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange stood as a bastion of orthodoxy and holiness. His writings, always clear and rigorous, demonstrate a logical precision not found in many of his contemporaries. This text examines the Catholic understanding of the soul and what happens when it is separated from the body, along with the teachings on the angels, and the Four Last Things. Defying the unsatisfying and uncritical response "it's just a mystery and we can only know after we die," Lagrange reasons to doctrines one can hold with certainty based on a solid metaphysics and the Catholic Tradition. When compared to Congar, De Lubac, Balthasar, and Rahner, Lagrange ranks far above them, being carried by the momentum of a pure, and true, Medieval theology.

This book is truly a great work. Fr. Lagrange lays out and explains the four last things in great detail and leaves the reader satisfied but wanting more because these mysteries are just so sublime. I highly recommend this book as well as Father's other books.

I am partial to this writer, Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange. I happen to love his writing. Reading his works is equal to listening to one of the greatest Catholic teachers in our age. His extensive books/topics are treasures for us to delve into, to gain steps toward Heaven. Serious, clear, and true: the best of truth and direction.

I have been looking and looking for this indepth philosophical, theological, mystical and scripitual base for the last 4 things, Death, Judgement, Heaven and Hell and a bypass to Purgatory. I know now in this life, I am what I am....what I pursue the most. Getting on in years this is a wonderful piece to help me arrive at a synthesis that I can really live wiith, Pray, Hope and know I am moving toward ultimate Love.

A treasure

I choose this for guidance in my own contemplative spiritual growth. The authors approach was simple and comforting.Would strongly recommend it for one's own spiritual growth.

Plunkitt of Tammany Hall: A Series of Very Plain Talks on Very Practical Politics (Signet Classics)

About the Author

George Washington Plunkitt was born into poverty in New York in 1842. He had only three years of formal schooling, but this lack did not hinder him from becoming one of the most powerful men in New York City politics. He died in 1924, a renowned civic leader and a millionaire. William L. Riordan, a newspaperman for the New York Evening Post, interviewed George Washington Plunkitt and preserved his philosophy for posterity. He recognized in Plunkitt an exceptional frankness that set him apart from his fellow political bosses. In Plunkitt of Tammany Hall Riordan admits readers into an area of life that mystified middle-class Americans at the turn of the twentieth century. Peter Quinn is a former speechwriter for Mario Cuomo and the author of Banished Children of Eve: A Novel of Civil War New York.

There is a long tradition of American politicians using their offices to barter power and influence and to enrich themselves. I know what you’re thinking—I am about to launch into a tirade about Donald Trump. No, actually, he is by no means the most famous such politician. He isn’t the most famous such New York politician. For who can possibly beat Tammany Hall?Tammany Hall is shorthand for the political machine that controlled New York democratic politics for 150 years. Ed Koch is the man most often credited with ending their mafia-like reign in 1960. You have probably heard of how Tammany Hall stole elections, intimidated political antagonists and shook down businessmen. You have probably read about the Boss Tweed’s antipathy to African-Americans, Hispanics and Jews. (Indeed, it is this antipathy that may at least partially explain Trump’s own discrimination against those same groups—he was a New York contractor after all.)But Tammany Hall survived for as long as it did not because it hated people but because it provided for them. If you gave Tammany your vote, you could count on social services and a job at a time when the poor had no services and there was no unemployment insurance or a safety net. Tammany Hall provided that safety net in exchange for your vote. And in a series of frank and disarmingly charming, informal lectures of sorts, Plunkitt revels in this corruption. Plunkitt may or may not be book-educated (in any event, he takes a dim view of people who are) but he does understand people very well. He understands that when you ostentatiously help someone when they’re in a poor way indeed they will remember you at the polls. That (he explains) is why it’s so important to chase fire engines and ambulances. And it’s important to be there when people celebrate life events: from weddings to funerals. That too will get you a vote. And sure, Plunkitt made money off the deal and he provided jobs for his friends (why would he provide jobs for people who were political ingrates?). But as he saw it, there was nothing wrong with that. After all, his business was politics and, since people depended on him doing well in his business (and he did; he did quite well) and people rely on him doing well for their livelihoods, the people’s interests and his interests coincide. What is wrong with that, he repeatedly asks in his disarming and funny way?The fact that Tammany Hall lasted for 150 years and that we have now elected Trump (who asks that exact same question often in exact same words Plunkitt uses) indicates that we have yet to come up with a good answer to that question. Are you OK with political corruption if you get something out of it too?

Forget about political theory, right- or left-wing approaches, grandiose philosophies, demographics, and so on.If you want to know how to get yourself elected to public office, maintain that office, get re-elected, and expand your power base, "Plunkitt of Tammany Hall" is THE book to read. Regardless of the century.Mr. Plunkitt was a Tammany politician, State Senator, and holder of a number of critical posts in the Tammany organization during the late 19th century. He grew rich on deals, brokered issues, and was a walking example of an organization (machine) politician of the day. He gave a bunch of speeches from his rostrum, the New York County bootblack stand, on how Tammany and politicians should and did operate, and everything he says (except maybe about excise and "blockades on the elevated roads") is still true today. He told his Boswell, a reporter named William Riordan, the following:Study human nature and act accordingly.Reach out to all elements in your district. You cannot succeed simply through degrees and book-learning -- you have to understand people. The most important commodity in politics is being able to deliver votes for the organization. The more you can command, the better.Reciprocity is critical in patronage.Do not violate the penal code -- that's how organization politicians get in trouble.See your opportunities and take them.Do not wear a dress suit when dealing with residents in the district.Provide services for your constituents or outlets for their abilities.Display patriotism at all times."Reformers are only morning glories."Support the organization at all times.Ensure that your supporters turn out to vote.Everything that Senator Plunkitt said in 1886 is still absolutely true today. If you want to understand politics in America, or make a career of it, read this book, cover to cover, front to back, keep it on your desk, refer to it, read it again, and do what it tells you.

This is not to review the work "Plunkitt Of Tammany Hall" by William L. Riordon, but this particular edition.First of all, this work has no editor or publisher listed, which is very strange. It has (very) numerous typos and stylistic errors (e.g. four instances where a line or two was continued unnecessarily on to a new page). But most disturbing of all (besides the fact that an "author/editor" - not Riordon - is listed above in the Amazon listing, but nowhere in the book) is that at the very end of the book, on the last page facing the inside cover, is a barcode, and the following: "Made In The USA; Lexington, KY; 13 April 2012." Mind you: I *ORDERED* this book late on 12 April 2012. You may imagine my total confusion at this point.Did they receive my order and print this book the next day?I was dubious at first, but I'm beginning to think they did!For $5.99, next time I'll order ten! They should just READ the text before they print it, for goodness sake. Periods and commas are easy things to get right!

Awesome book with an insider's prospective on machine politics. It reads like a series of how-to essays that let you know what it takes to be a political boss. Of course most of the stuff in the book is now illegal. As a bonus, it is very short and quick to read. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in history, politics, or local government.

A Tammeny Hall ward boss of a bygone era speaks with a bluntness that people crave in politicians today. He is open about his involvement in what he calls "honest graft," in contrast to the high-sounding but even more corrupt politicians of today. His words also have a subtle humor and cleverness that make this book entertaining as well as informative.
