I bought this book for my daughter but since she was away this weekend, I read through it myself. I ended up writing three pages of bullets/notes! Some things I already knew and was going to suggest to her so it was nice to have validation but I learned a few new things myself. I would tell her to recommend this to all her friends in school but I think I'll wait until after she finds a job because the tips are so clearly spelled out that I think this book will be an advantage for her.I also appreciated the fact that she recommends the best way to use your parents as a resource.My favorite advice beyond the very important (lock down your social media sites now) and the very practical (add a signature line in your email) was Follow Every Rainbow.Now here's hoping with a graduation one semester early, four internships and this great book that she gets that very important first job on her way to enjoying her career as much as her father and I have enjoyed ours.

As a Career Coach, I find this book to be a great resource for college students and recent grads who are interested in preparing for a rewarding career after graduation. Lindsey Pollack is both knowledgeable and encouraging, and presents multiple strategies for students to be career-ready in today's competitive job market. A few topics include interview preparation, networking, service events, and blogging. A great read for the millennial student or job seeker, regardless of whether they have identified their career path or not.

I first heard about this book from a counselor at my college and the way he was describing the book automatcically grabbed my attention. I got the book that same evening. As soon as I opened the book I couldnt put it down. The contents in this book shares some information that you can never forget. The author speaks to you in an easy way and there is a level of understanding. I'm so glad I got this book its like my best friend.Get the book right now! I promise you won't be disappointed.

The pages are loose and the cardboard box they come in is intended as the frame to hold the pages. All of that is well and good, except that then HOW the item is shipped becomes important. My package was damaged. I have it taped together to get through the year. For those who are buying primarily the quilt designs, I encourage you to go ahead and buy it. So far, it appears that there are a few to several days that are devoted to one pattern, with the first day including the material requirements and subsequent days providing the block patterns. For those hoping for a sturdy calendar, buy something else.

I love it! I was worried about being overwhelmed with too many new projects too fast but it turned out better than I thought.Rather than having an entirely new quilt pattern every day, it is broken down so that each day you are introduced to a single block or part of a whole quilt.The instructions are clear and the illustrations are beautiful

Sent as a gift. My friend had already had one of these in another year and she said the day-to-day patterns are wonderful so I call Quilt Block and Patter-a-Day 2016 a hit.

This was Just what I wanted. It's has so many cute and cleaver ideas. Will be ordering the 2017 calender too.

I order this item every year and keep on my computer desk to enjoy the colorful patterns as they change every day. I have also found many of the patterns on the reverse to be useful for small projects. They can also be enlarged.

Alexander Smalls is a restaurateur and co-owner of the celebrated Harlem jazz club Minton’s. As the former chef/owner of Café Beulah, Sweet Ophelia's, Shoebox Cafe, and The Cecil, Smalls has received great acclaim in the restaurant scene―including cooking at the James Beard House and being named one of Zagat’s 19 NYC Restaurant Power Players. When I was in New York last October for my birthday, we went to dinner at the Chef's Club and JJ Johnson was the featured chef for that month. My friend Stephanie decided to split the collard green salad and the fried sea bass. One of the best meals I have ever had.I reached out to JJ Johnson on Instagram to get the collard green salad recipe. He told me that it was going to be in his cookbook coming out in March 2018. As soon as the book came out, I purchased it. So far I have made the collard green salad, the cornbread and the apple cider-glazed Brussels sprouts recipes. Everything came out great. I can't wait to try other recipes in the book.

The authors made “The Cecil” iconic. A publisher’s blurb mentions “soul food,” but I recently heard one of the authors rail against the term. It is a false way of categorizing a cuisine. Afro Asian American can be a more descriptive, wider in scope, historically correct term.The book opens with a prelude by author and restaurateur Alexander Smalls on his birth to a rice-rich, Lowcountry (Sea Island) household residing in the Upcountry of Spartanburg, SC. Like the explorer Matthew Henson, Smalls writes that he has has spent decades researching… not the Arctic, but the foods and foodways of the Asian-African diaspora and the Afro-Asian-American flavor profile. Chef JJ Johnson follows with an essay on his Caribbean-flavored childhood. He advises readers to be open hearted and “scat” read the book, picking up from here and there, replacing rice pilaf with their pineapple black fried rice, or using purple yam puree instead of standard mash.The chapters are: Salads; Meat & Poultry; Fish; Vegetarian Entrees; Rice & Sides; Sauces, Dressings & Spicy Sides; and Cocktails. There are also essays on a variety of topics, including Bengali Harlem, Bourbon Tea, and Minton’s Playhouse.“Salads” opens with Grilled Watermelon Garden Salad with Lime Mango Dressing and Cornbread Croutons which recounts how in 1935, George Jones opened a Harlem movie theater with an adjacent ‘watermelon garden’ of picnic tables and umbrellas. The Lime Mango dressing in tangier than lemon. In a recipe for Collard Green Salad with Coconut Dressing, the authors make light of those friends who think it is a kale salad. The Roasted Beet Salad has North African roots; they are sweeter than skittles, he writes, and roasting them gives a deeper flavor (wear gloves, don’t stain your counters). The Harlem Market Salad uses spinach, shiitake mushrooms and black lentils. The Heirloom Tomato Salad with Curry Lime Yogurt Dressing is a flashback to the markets in Ghana.“Meat & Poultry” starts with a Cinnamon-Scented Fried Guinea Hen. They serve it with Charred Okra, Adzuki Red Beans and Roasted Sweet Potatoes; and brine the bird in chiles, cinnamon, palm sugar and thyme. Their Afro-Asian American Gumbo uses a slow cooked roux which reminds them of Senegal. Bebop Chicken Chili uses 18 ingredients in addition to beans and chicken, and is better and more complex if you wait til a day later to serve it. Nigerian inspired Suya Kebabs are a mild version that uses lime juice and peanuts as a foundation. The chef’s tip on making BBQ Smoked Brisket Egg Rolls with Gumbo Spice BBQ Sauce is to seal them tight before frying. “Chapter 3: Fish” opens with a roasted whole red snapper in a lemon/black pepper marinade. It reminds the authors of Ghana and Accra’s Labadi Pleasure Beach. The Salt Crusted Salmon with Collard Green Salsa Verde inserts aromatics into the fish which call upon their Afro-Asian-American flavor profile. Moqueca Brazilian Fish Stew uses a bold broth of green curry, tomato sauce, coconut milk and chicken stock. Curry Crusted Cod is paired with Hominy Stew. “Vegetables” opens with a recipe for “King Mushroom with Harissa Vinaigrette, Roasted Carrots, Carrot Curry Puree and Cipollini Onions.” The goal is to post it to social media and then to eat it. Tofu Gnocchi is paired with a Black Garlic Crema and Scallions. Plantain Kelewele takes plantains, rice flour, and a chile as main ingredients and fries the batter in hot oil. Spiked Rosemary Macaroni and Cheese Pie with Carmelized Shallots is a Harlem staple for Chef Smalls. He uses penne rigate. Roti followed the British slave trade, and is found in their historic ports of call. The authors share a recipe for Roti with Black-Eyed Pea Hummus, Eggplant Puree and Carrot Curry Puree. “Chapter 5: Rice and Sides” opens with an essay on rice. (Chef Johnson is so taken with rice that I read that he is planning a rice-focused restaurant in the future). Oh, it took me back to my beloved place, my home for three years, 2005-2008. Such nostalgia and beauty in the stories, recipes, dishes, and pictures. I also have Grace the Table by Mr. Smalls, which I have cherished for many years.

This is such an AWESOME cookbook! I love the written pieces as much as I love the pictures and recipes. The authors combine American Soul Food with foods from other countries with recipes requiring ingredients I've never heard of. But, those I won't make right away lololol. This is a beautifully developed item, and I'm so very glad I found it!!

Although a different twist and an effort to bridge culinary interests, the book was not quite what I expected. I applaud the concept, but with a name like "Between Harlem and Heaven" I was looking for more Afro and less Asian, especially with the authors. The introduction of Asian influences warrants more adjustment for me.Also, the photos didn't always do justice to the meals. Maybe it was the lighting, composition or setting; but it could have been more appealing.

I love maps. I won't lie. I have oodles of them for places I've explored and those I plan to visit soon. On my list of places to check out this year is Copenhagen and this little map caught my eye. Unlike traditional fan-folded maps, this thing is folded in a way that is nothing short of mind-blowing. Open the map like a little book and the map unfolds before your eyes like a dazzling flower. Close the book and the map refolds on its own as if by magic. Who ever came up with this design should be given a corner office with a nice view, the best desk chair money can buy, and free hot lattes for life. Along with being incredibly clever, it seems to contain all of the information I will need to navigate this city. There is even a stand-alone transit map. I wish every map maker was so thoughtful and inventive.

Convenient in size but hard to read without magnification. This is the typical trade-off of the features. Size does also limit the labeling of all smaller streets in some circumstances. But you will need to weigh the trade-off in the size of the book and convenience versus all the features and bulk you'd have with several larger maps. So overall the pop-up maps seem to slightly outweigh the needs for having the bulk of several larger maps which would be needed for all the coverage of the pop-up maps.

We used this as much before our trip as during it to map out our trip w hotel as base of travels by highlighting the hotel, nearby metro, and attractions. By the time we arrived in Copenhagen I had a good idea of where we were going. Recommend!

Writing is a little small but otherwise a great and compact map. It doesn't hold up super well though.

Good enough for close-in walks, historical sites and museums in the city.

I purchased this book after visiting The Villa Medici's enchanted garden; the garden of Iris Origo's early life. I wanted to learn about the person who grew in this inspired and inspiring place. What was her life?This is a book one can read at one sitting, or open anywhere to enjoy her evocative writing. It's not just about the love and planning of gardens, but also about the vicissitudes of her family life. life.

Iris Origo had a difficult, if not charmed, childhood. Her education was unusual yet thorough. Her marriage was not the norm for her social standing yet worked. Her steadfastness during WWII (Please read her war diary) invoked a strong, sensitive woman who did not become afraid in the face of the horrors that came to the farm.

I read this book and "War in Val d'Orcia" which lead me to my current stay at the Tuscan farm "La Foce" (lafoce.com). It is a wonderful story and Iris Origo's background is remarkable. I came here as a sort of pilgrammage after reading the book. It is also a great location for visiting the hilltop Tuscan towns like Montepulciano, Montalcino, Orvieto etc.

I haven't read the book yet; bought it for my husband, the greatest of Italy fans who could not put it down from the moment it arrived. He finished it and now wants to go see Origo's houses in Tuscany and Long Island. He had already read her diary and loved it. He loved this even more; had many asides to tell about as he read it. The extremely wealthy Origo family should be recognized for their compassion for those less fortunate than they and are a great family to emulate, he says.

Lovely recounting of one's life and social influences molding the character of this brave and humane woman who believed personal success was based on helping others.

I found Images & Shadows by Iris Origo fascinating.. Coming from such a wealthy family she was so modest and unassuming. I also purchased the coffee table book with stunning pictures of the estate in Tuscany. Definitely books worth owning.

After reading War in Val d'Orica I was anxious to read more of her books.This was a great disappointment, she spent half of the book on endless details of her relatives and complaining about her shallow privileged life. The chapter on Writing was dull and the book didn't become interesting till page 199.I am happy I did not buy more of her books.Pat Sica

This is a very lovely book. Full of great information for the more advanced decorator. It is a fine one to add to your permanent library, especially if you really enjoy making fondant/gumpaste flowers. She offers some of the more interesting and unusual flowers. She is from the U.K. so some of the flowers are not ones we get in the U.S.A. Most of these flowers require cutters, but she does include some that do not. There are good step by step directions, provided you do have some knowledge of this medium. The only flower that I can't find a cutter for here is the carnation and it looks as though it would be a great way to make it, too.

This book is the one to get if you are interested in making sugar or gumpaste flowers. It is a complete step by step for common AND unusual flowers. Having pictures for each step eliminates mistakes. Excellent book which made my first attempt at gumpaste a snap. I made a difficult flower, cymbidium orchids, for a wedding shower display, and they turned out beautiful. Highly recommended.

Great book, very ugly and dated book cover, but the it has very good detailed info on how to create each flower. Missing some classic flowers, though.

The steps in this book are easy to follow and the flowers look fantastic. She is English, so some of the terminology is a little bit different. Plus, I had problems finding the stems to make my own stamens. Otherwise, this was a fantastic book. Must better than anything produced by Wilton.

This is an excellent how to book. It has lots of pictures of each step, so it is easy to follow. Please be aware that you should have a little experience in fondant/ gum paste work. The book also uses many cutters and veiners, but there are many things you can do without them. Very instructive text.

I ordered this book to try and learn to make gumpaste flowers. My flowers turned out great!!! I was able to use the books instructions and techniques to help me make flowers that were both in and not in this book simply by following the same steps with the flower that I wanted to make. GREAT BOOK IF YOU ARE WANTING TO LEARN AND YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH REAL FLOWERS!!!!

This book has many different flowers. Detailed photos and directions will make it easy to recreate these delicate and intricate flowers. The cake ideas are unique and pretty.

This arrived today. I have glanced at it but haven't read it. It seems to be a beautifully illustrated book with plenty of instructions. Glad I bought it.

If you're interested in proofreading, you know you are no dummy. This is a good intro to both proofreading and copyediting, how to do them, and to some extent, how to make a career. I haven't had a chance to proofread this entire book, so I can't attest to its accuracy, but I'm impressed with the breadth of content.Published in 2007, it touches on electronic proofreading and editing but doesn't delve into the dozens (hundreds?) of apps and software in use for editing today, nor does it address the challenges of proofing collaborative and cloud documents. It might be time for an updated edition!

This is by far the most helpful book that I've read when it comes to learning how to edit. Being able to see examples was immensely helpful. There were a few things that threw me off, like EDITING errors (or at least inconsistencies), but I caught on. For example, on page 243 she explains some different basic codes in electronic editing. One of them is [NL] = numbered list. Then on page 250 she uses [UN] for an unnumbered list even though she never mentioned the "[UN]" code anywhere in the list of codes. There were a couple instances of that sort of thing happening.But overall I would absolutely recommend this book if you're thinking of becoming an editor or proofreader or going to school to be one. It's a must-have book on my shelf.

The first thing I did was laugh at the review that gave this book a low score and said she wasn't feeling it. Sorry, I normally wouldn't even read the other reviews for this type of book, but that one gave me my laugh of the day. Whether you want to break into proofreading and copyediting, or whether you just need a quick brush-up, this book isn't bad. There are things it misses going over, but they are things that the normal proofreader won't normally run into. I edit contracts, corporate brochures and correspondence, annual meeting documents, etc., and this book has come in handy numerous times. This is my second copy, because I needed an updated one (plus my first one had fallen apart).

Just started proofreading and copyediting and while "The Chicago Style Manual - 16th edition" is THE bible for the publishing house i freelance for, this has helped me realize many of the common questions I had: How to break into the business when you are new? How to present yourself to publishing houses (and their addresses are here!) using what for a resume? What are some common mistakes - such as "their, they're or there"? - which BTW if that rankles you when someone gets it wrong, you're in the right business. However, does not specify when to use "than or then".... Love Ms Gilad's style: friendly and unassuming and yet instructive. However, can be too simplistic at times, omitting heavier questions of usage. For that you can always go to the questions at "The Chicago Manual's" website. That's the only reason I gave it a 4 star review vs 5. Helpful by all means, BUT not in depth enough for me. All in all, this is worth purchasing for many good insights and info you wont find elsewhere.

Great book. Lot of great information of how to get started in fields as well as the difference between copy editing and proofreading. Great resource

I found this to be one of he better copyediting/proofreading books that I have come across - but I also love the "-- for dummies" books. It was nicely written and had really good tips, but for someone who is already good at proofreading, the practice test were wayyy to easy. This would be great for someone who is struggling or wants to put their foot into the door as a copyeditor.Overally, great tips but predictable practice tests.

I'm a professional writer and editor, and I think this book is a fantastic tutorial on how to dig into a proofreading or editing job. Though it's not really style-guide specific, I like keeping a copy of this book on my shelf for a quick reference — Gilad's grammar and punctuation examples are really top notch.

This book was so incredibly helpful! Easy to use and easy to understand. It was a great reference for me when I was editing a friends book. I originially ordered this as an electronic book, but I will order a hard copy so I can mark it up and bookmark pages that I need.

This book is very well done and has colorful illustrations that capture children's attention. I like this style of pop-up because while not as fancy as the style of Sabuda, it's more durable especially since the targeted age range is stated as 3-5 years old. I feel like this is written very well to that age range as an introduction to Martin Luther. I knocked a star off though because it left me wanting more. Given the young age range, it should be assumed that the book will be read to the children by an adult. I think the book would be an easy 5 star if there were a page at the back with more detail. I know many younger children's books that include such a page so that the adult can have more information to help answer questions the children will inevitably ask. Or even show some resources where you can learn more would be a great addition! It is just a brief overview of his life, but if you are unfamiliar with Martin Luther, it would probably raise a lot of questions. Again, excellent book, and I would buy it again. It just left me wanting a little more and needing to answer several questions for my children.

I gave this book to my pastor to use in children's sermons. It is fun even for an adult to read. It tells the story of how Martin Luther came to the knowledge, of the grace, that Jesus gives. He stood up to the church in Rome, & began to reform the way people learned about God, through being able to read the Bible themselves. He translated the Bible into the people's language, German at the time, and the printing press had just been invented, so the people could get their hands on the Word of God. The Lutheran church of today came out of this movement. The colors & fun pop-ups keep the kids attention, while they learn about a very important figure of history.

Great pop-up book for children. It is not terrible intricate which makes it good for kids. I love pop-up books, but usually do not want kids to handle them as they are too delicate. This will stand up to kids if they are careful. Plus it's a good introduction for kids to the great reformer, Martin Luther. Would also make a great read-aloud, especially to a small group where they could see the pop-ups as you read.

Fun, creatively and beautifully illustrated and crafted, this story book is written well and suited for young children. I love especially that animals are everywhere and the kids I babysit always love spotting and counting them with me! A must-have if you love children and love to impart with them this special treasure of history when the Lord used Luther and others to inform, reform and transform His church by going back to His Holy and living Word.

This is a beautifully illustrated pop-up book that makes the life of Martin Luther come alive for children and adults!

PLEASE READ**** Great books but pages swapped in 2 of the 6 books**OK we do LOVE the books that are printed correctly. However we have had 3 sets of these now and each set has pages swapped in two of the books (Ill add pics later) So if they had been printed correctly I would have given this 5 stars. We LOVE Daniel Tiger and these are great simple early reader books. After this third set the gentleman with Amazon that helped me with the refund said he put a note in to check them out so hopefully they will be fixed soon!! And as always AMAZON has been Wonderful to work with through all this.

These are NOT the usual Daniel Tiger books, so if you are looking for good stories to read to your child which closely mirror Daniel Tiger episodes this is not the set you want. However, if you have a child obsessed with Daniel Tiger who is just on the brink of starting to read these will likely give him/her the needed push.The stories aren't boring and repetitive like many of the earliest reading books, and the pictures are wonderful and reminiscent of some of the best Daniel Toger episodes. The print is large enough and the words simple enough to make a child think about trying to sound them out, and although there is very little actually written on each page, the needed story highlights come through. My 3 year old has been enjoying "reading" these books on his own (ie: intensely studying each picture over and over again, and pointing at the letters on the page), and he will bring it over to me to read a couple pages, then wander off to "study" the pages we just read.Daniel is a big star around here. He helped my son get motivated to try sitting on the potty, and I suspect that my son's desire to learn about his "hero's" adventure will soon have him reading as well.

I am very happy that my child likes Daniel Tiger. I think the social skills they teach are wonderful. I was very happy to get these books for my daughter. HOWEVER, 2 of the six books have mixed up pages. I have no idea how 4 pages of one story ends up in a second book, and 4 pages from the second book ended up in the first!! I returned the first set because I thought it must be an odd mistake, but the second set had the same thing!!! I hate taking books back from my child, but I can't have her reading books with a mixed up storyline and messing up her comprehension.

These are nice books and my son will be at the beginner reading level soon and these will be perfect. They are not however the same books as the other Daniel Tiger books. Most pages have one sentence each and isn't really a good story time book.That said they will be great when he starts to read on his own.

The stories are great, but the quality of the book is terrible. My daughter has had the books for 2 days and all but one fell apart. I've taped, glued, and stapled them back together because she loves her books. For books designed for toddlers, I would expect them to be better reinforced.

My 2 year old loves these books! The set I received did not have any issues with printing/binding or pages being out of order. So I’m assuming those problems have been fixed. Keep in mind these books are for Pre-Level One readers. There are only 1-2 sentences on each page. It is large print and they use simple words. Definitely a short read. Perfect for the attention span of a toddler. Great value for 6 books.

I guess I should have paid more attention to others reviews. The stories are great and simple enough that my twins are working on trying to say each page with me. The quality of the book are junk. I saw someone else already has pictures up of the bad binding. We have had the book for two weeks and they all look like that. The covers are all falling off, the glue on them is horrible. I am glad I got them because my kids love them but I am disappointed in the quality of the books themselves.

Perfect for my two year old! One of her favorite books and I love the messages.Unfortunately, I had to tape almost all the pages of the book bc everything falls apart.To reiterate all the other reviews, the binding is a hot mess. Weak as a post-it note.The only pro is that my daughter loves DT and I love its positive messages -- so for that my 3 star --> 4 star review.
