Review

A "Best Book of 1998" Library Journal selection"This is the definitive work on Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa.... The work is exhaustively researched and scrupulously documented; it also makes for engrossing reading, as Latin America specialist Katz takes hold of the legend, gives it a good shaking, and comes up with something far more complex." (Library Journal starred review)"The lifework of a great historian, this book is without rival as a biography of one of the enigmatic figures of the 20th century. . . . With scrupulous detail and objectivity, and with a fluid narrative style, this is the book on Villa that has long been awaited by both scholars and general readers." (Adolfo Gilly Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico)"A towering new biography.... The research here obviously represents decades of devotion, and it is formidable.... Gives broader perspective on the revolution, one that is sorely needed." (New York Times Book Review)"A splendid work that can be enjoyed by the general reader and by scholars of the period on both sides of the border." ―The Journal of American History"Anyone with any interest in Pancho Villa will want to have this book. It is the last word on the subject and will no doubt be the definitive work. . . . You'll be hooked." (Publication of the El Paso County Historical Society)"Friedrich Katz's The Life and Times of Pancho Villa is a masterpiece of contemporary historiography. . . . Diligent, extremely well-documented, fluid and elegant at all times, Friederich Katz presents Mexicans with our ghosts―alive." (Carlos FuentesLos Angeles Times Book Review)

From the Inside Flap

Alongside Moctezuma and Benito Juárez, Pancho Villa is probably the best-known figure in Mexican history. Villa legends pervade not only Mexico but the United States and beyond, existing not only in the popular mind and tradition but in ballads and movies. There are legends of Villa the Robin Hood, Villa the womanizer, and Villa as the only foreigner who has attacked the mainland of the United States since the War of 1812 and gotten away with it.Whether exaggerated or true to life, these legends have resulted in Pancho Villa the leader obscuring his revolutionary movement, and the myth in turn obscuring the leader. Based on decades of research in the archives of seven countries, this definitive study of Villa aims to separate myth from history. So much attention has focused on Villa himself that the characteristics of his movement, which is unique in Latin American history and in some ways unique among twentieth-century revolutions, have been forgotten or neglected. Villa’s División del Norte was probably the largest revolutionary army that Latin America ever produced. Moreover, this was one of the few revolutionary movements with which a U.S. administration attempted, not only to come to terms, but even to forge an alliance. In contrast to Lenin, Mao Zedong, Ho Chi Minh, and Fidel Castro, Villa came from the lower classes of society, had little education, and organized no political party. The first part of the book deals with Villa’s early life as an outlaw and his emergence as a secondary leader of the Mexican Revolution, and also discusses the special conditions that transformed the state of Chihuahua into a leading center of revolution. In the second part, beginning in 1913, Villa emerges as a national leader. The author analyzes the nature of his revolutionary movement and the impact of Villismo as an ideology and as a social movement. The third part of the book deals with the years 1915 to 1920: Villa’s guerrilla warfare, his attack on Columbus, New Mexico, and his subsequent decline. The last part describes Villa’s surrender, his brief life as a hacendado, his assassination and its aftermath, and the evolution of the Villa legend. The book concludes with an assessment of Villa’s personality and the character and impact of his movement.

First of all, I must say Friedrich Katz deserves a standing ovation for the study and writing of revered Mexican revolutionary general Pancho Villa. This is THE book to get if you are interested in Pancho Villa and the Mexican revolution as was presented to him and his environment and dealings. A must be read book for every American born Mexican like myself who want's to dig a little deeper in our historical hero. Friedrich does an astounding job in separating the man from the myth and legend only to have us see that he WAS/IS the legend without myth in this book. Villa the villain and Villa the revolutionary Generalissimo seem to go hand in hand as Katz really does an outstanding job of portraying him as he was without being biased. I can say hands down at the very end of this book, it left me with tears and a smile on my face and gave me a GREAT reconnection to my heritage and deep respect for a national hero. May Friedrich Katz be blessed and wins my respect and may the man known as Francisco "Pancho" Villa rest in peace, Viva la revolution!! Y muerte a los que se rrobaron su cabeza!!

Nearly 20 years since its initial publication, Katz's "The Life and Times of Pancho Villa" remains one of the most important books on Villa and the Mexican Revolution. Any serious student of Mexico or the US Borderlands should have a copy and its frequently cited by other authors covering this period, even if indirectly. Casual readers take warning; this is not a breezy non-fiction read, but a serious, heavily researched study on a controversial historical figure and a conflict that for many American is a total mystery.

Meticulously researched, beautifully written, very well organized -- an authentic view of a complex and controversial figure. Lots of background on the Mexican Revolution and its major players, the state of Chihuahua, economic and social relations during a time of amazing change, and Mexican-US relations. Helpful summaries of various points of view, so even though the author's own definite opinions come through, you also get a sense of the wider debate. Thoughtful comparisons of the Mexican Revolution with other revolutions and insights on the dynamics of revolution in general. Incredible level of detail. I don't know where else you could find a book on this topic that is this thoughtful, balanced, and sensitive -- and readable. It is also over 900 pages long. That's 900 pages of solid content -- it's not verbose, and it's not a data dump, it's all good stuff -- but daunting all the same. Sometimes I felt the author got too far down in the weeds and lost the big picture, but this was definitely the exception rather than the rule. If the length bothers you, (1) do not try to read it in a hurry and (2) pick and choose (guided by the well-written headings) if you want, there's no law that says you have to read the whole thing. Definitely a thing o' beauty and worth the trouble.

This has to be the most comprehensive treatise of the enigmatic Pancho Villa written. Friedrich Katz spent years of forensic type research to bring to life in immense, but highly readable detail, the life and times of one of Mexico's greatest historical figures. Replete with all the intrigues, humour, battles and politics of the those heady times, I can definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in powerful charismatic men who have shaped the world we live in. The book store delivered it well within the time quoted and the book was in excellent condition.

Katz provides the best biography of Pancho Villa. It is lengthy but is thorough and covers the relevant times in his life. Villa was a thug and a thief and Katz shows that well. His attacks against the government and the United States are clearly laid out and Katz analyzes the surrounding characters very well. If you are interested in the Mexican Revolution this is an essential book to have. For those looking to build up a library on Mexico history this is a must read. I loved every page of this book and have read it several times and each time I unlock a new level of knowledge about the revolution and Villa. Highly recommend.

We were a little surprised of the number of pages!!!! However, about 200 of the 985 pages are conclusion (had to read it first), notes, appendix, etc. We LOVE IT!!!As a Mexican, I say ... It is a GREAT BOOK, full of details and adventures of the Centauro del Norte, Doroteo Arango!!!

A long and insightful read.

This book gives a view of Mexico and Pancho Villa and President Woodrow Wilson and Germany before WWI that I never knew. Friedrich Katz wove a beautiful tapestry of words. The book is over 600 pages and I would read it again.
