Review

"Vickie Howell has done it yet again with her latest book, Finger Knitting Fun. My daughter keeps asking to learn how to knit so this book may just be the answer to my summer boredom prayers. I love that the projects are so versatile and can work for boys, girls, grade-schoolers, teens, and even adults -- there are several projects inside that I would make and wear for myself. Thanks to Vickie I learned to arm knit, so it makes sense that she teach (me and) my kids to finger knit!" --Jen Perkins, Contributing DIY Writer for BlogHer

This book is just okay--not as exciting or straightforward as I had hoped. My daughter loves to craft and loves making wearable items, so I thought this would be great. The projects are really pretty limited, though, and most of them require special materials. The wearable products, for example, require leather lacing, suede lacing, paracord, wool yarn, velveteen ribbon, ruffle yarn... Only a few of them call for run-of-the-mill, midweight yarn. I was expecting a book that my daughter pick up and do any project using simple yarn from around the house. In addition, most of the projects are very similar--especially in the third section, "Use It, Love It." Basically, you can make a finger-knit rope and...use it for a clothesline, or hang little lanterns from it, or use it for a jump rope, or sew it onto a pillow in a swirl design, or... I guess I was hoping for more variety. As for the wearables, they really didn't appeal to my daughter. Maybe at 5 one of the four varieties of finger-knit necklace (or three bracelets, differing only in material) would have been exciting, but at 7 they were not enticing. The one project she has really loved from this book is the little snakes--she made one for each of her cousins. On the plus side, the first, how-to section of the book is well done. The pictures and text very clearly illustrate finger knitting with two, three, or four fingers, as well as two ways to tie off your project and additional skills like attaching a new color or stitching knit pieces together. And the book itself is good quality, well-organized, and attractive.

This book delivered, it had way more patterns in it then I expected from online previews. My daughter is looking forward to raiding my yarn stash and making lots of snakes to give as gifts to neighborhood friends. Vickie as always has an excellent eye for whats adorable, fun and modern! Also perfect for when you need projects to knit as gifts.I remember finger knitting with cotton loops when I was a child and making a long chain that literally all around my house. We would sit outside in the sun all summer long making the chain and giggling while we chatted about school and other silly things. I have no idea what ever happened to that chain but I know every moment sitting in the sun with my friends was a priceless thing. Hoping my daughter can have the same experience with this book as her guid and my endless stash as fuel!

This is a really cute book for introducing kids to knitting...if you have a girl. I bought this for my 8 year old son and he was so excited until he started flipping through it and noticed that there was only one boy pictured in the projects and three- fourths of the projects were marketed towards girls.i do understand that more girls knit, but am very tried of the authors and publishers continuing to promote this in their books and patterns. There could have been some different choices made here, like marketing the sash as a belt for boys or maybe just not sticking flowers on everything and making it pink. He wants to keep the book after I discussed how we could edit some of the patterns to be more for boys, but I really to shouldn't have to edit more than half of the projects myself just to sell my child on it.

This actually doesn’t explain how to do the second line of finger knitting after the first line is done. So I had to hop onto YouTube to learn. Don’t get the book. It’s not that exciting and the projects aren’t that inventive. Would maybe be better for someone 10 and older, or for a child who already knows how to sew. Wasn’t that impressed with the book honestly.

Book was sent to a woman's prison that can knit and crochet. The books I send get passed around to the women (there is a crochet club) and a lot of the items they make are for charity, battered women, unwed mothers, newborns, and other such like organizations.

I'm a knitter, and a friend wanted me to teach her how. She had a kit that didn't have the instructions . So I looked up the instructions online and was introduced to finger knitting I had never heard of finger knitting before. So simple even a child can do it and the projects are useful.

The pictures displayed on the book show that there are several young youth projects, but some of the projects are more complicated for the kids shown on the book. I would say this is for 2nd-5th graders.

I teach elementary school and have a Craft Club after school. Finger knitting is a huge hit with boys and girls, and this book gave us some great project ideas. Very simple to follow directions and lots of good illustrations. Even my Second graders could read and follow the directions on their own...and then they taught some Kindergarten's and First graders! It's pretty cool to see a 6-year old very seriously making a scarf for his Mom :-)
