I just graduated from college, and I wish I’d read this in high school. My roommate’s mother who works as a financial consultant recommended it. This book is the clearest introduction to investing I’ve found anywhere. It helped me understand all the options, and it uses academic research to back up its recommendations. It’s easy to read, requiring very little prior knowledge, and gives you great advice about how to invest your savings responsibly. I’m lucky to have found this gem so early in my career so I know I’ll be able to save for long term goals like buying a house, having kids, and retiring comfortably!

Great book for beginners. I buy these to give to people who have given no thought as to how to prepare for their future...and there are a lot of these. I was one of them, and thankfully I woke up in time, so I have made it a point to try to urge young people to give some thought to their financial future. This book is very accessible to someone who "hasn't got a clue." Several people I know began saving and investing as a result of reading the copy I gave them, and it is going to make a world of difference to them when they reach retirement age. So if you are one of the people "without a clue," this is the book for you.

After my 35 plus years of investing, I totally agree accept with his overall recommendation to use bond mutual funds for the fixed income portion. Normally I would agree, however with interest rates at about 40 year lows, and going up, laddered new issue bank cd's between 1 through 5 years is better. Vanguard, Fidelity, or Schwab can 'hand hold' through the process for free and no commissions or annual expenses. Plus the are federally insured.

If you're starting out on investing, this book is a very-much appreciated start and this is coming from a fellow newbie. I really appreciated the addressing of the facts from fiction on the consumer economics behind the investment sector. The sector that monitors sectors. I believe this book sets the tone of the proper perspective one should have before investing.The book establishes a baseline and inserts itself right in the middle of most americans, investment instruments for wealth and financial advisers. I don't believe any favors were made by writing this book except to be honest with the readers. Having just recently started investing as I approach 40 I've become more of an open airwave antenna picking up all the market news and signals. We have input sensors on 16 hours a day and we need to be cognizant of 'decision triggers'. The author associates the same principles to investing and tactfully shows the alternate view. The polite presentation of the views allow room for the investigative reader to explorer riskier areas (stocks). The tech stocks these days seem to be a lighthouse (not like the light bulb on the cover, but I'm in Tech... can't.. reeezist).The author is a CPA as clearly noted on the cover. That is, the letter designation for passing the much harder Series test. Ok, so I didn't mention the contents of the book. Hey, it's a "100 pages or less" and the man deserves his keep.

This did a good job of demystifying a lot of investing concepts. Having done some additional reading since, I can say that this was a very solid introduction and I'm happy to have had the opportunity to start here as opposed to having to wade through the dregs of the internet trying to find clear, concise information.

As I write this review every other review for this great little book gives it five stars and that is well deserved.For new investors, or for ANY investor who is not really (and I mean *really*) sure they are on top of things, this book is where to begin. It will show you the big picture and give you a clear view of every important aspect of investing for the long haul.There are other books that go into more detail or that have more rigorous theoretical discussion. Some have very entertaining histories and anecdotes, but most of those swamp the beginner in side issues or details one can't appreciate without the concise overview provided here. There are also many other introductory books, and I have read a few, but this one stands out for its clarity.You actually don't *need* any more than is in this book, but if you start to dig into the resources listed at the end you will probably want to dig deeper and learn more. When I came across this book I had already read most of what it lists in the Resources section and can say it contains a great selection.I read this book after about six months of self-education about investment strategies and can say that it covers all the important aspects in a highly organized way that is easy to follow. After reading this I bought three more copies to give to my (adult) children. I didn't think any of the other books I read would have been of any use to them. Perhaps after they read this one they will follow up on their own.

But that's ok, I knew that going in. If you are completely new to investing, this is actually a fantastic book because it will instil that important first impression that is critical when you first realize it's necessary for you to at least start reading about this stuff... that there is really not all that much to know! this easy to read book is guaranteed to take a weight off your shoulders and point you in the right direction for the small amount of reading you'll need to do over and above what's in this already. This book has almost nothing to do with the practice of milling, please don't waste your money. It will answer none of an artisan bread baker's questions about how to influence the final loaf, nor does it more than superficially cover such key topics as the effect of milling different grains, different particle sizes, tempering, sifting, starch damage, judging milled flour based on its look and feel, etc etc etc. In addition, if you are interested in the health benefits of eating whole grains - the primary subject matter of this book - there are much more competent authors that have taken up the subject. The factory inspired recipe section at the end of the book is worthless (the "basic" loaf calls for TEN ingredients, several of them industrial), and virtually any artisan bread baking book would be a better purchase (flour, water, salt!). Clearly the nuance of the WHOLE baking process, and the role of natural fermentation in unlocking many of the nutrients the author spends so many pages discussing - not to mention FLAVOR - completely escapes her. Apparently it's enough to mill your own flour and that's all that matters, and then a kind of Wonderbread logic takes over - it's like making your own pasta only to top it with a can of Cheez Whiz.I would go so far as to say that the subtitle of this book, "A guide to modern home grain milling", is an outright lie. There are a number of positive reviews to this book, but these bread machine using reviewers seem to like this book based on the "revelation" that whole grains are good for you, and that you can, in fact, mill flour at home. I don't need a published book to give me that obvious, internet searchable information, but that seems to be the primary value of the book for the positive reviewers. Had the book been more honestly titled I would have never purchased it - and that's why I'm returning it.

I have been milling grain at home since the 70's. I didn't purchase this book with the thought that every page would be new information for me. Unlike a prior reviewer, how is an author to know how much information is enough or too much for each reader? I would prefer too much information; I can filter out what I know quite easily. This is an excellent primer for someone interested in, or just starting out in, whole grain work. I wish we'd had something like this back in the early seventies!I have an employee who has approached me, interested in doing her own whole grain work. This was the book I have loaned her. Unlike a prior reviewer, please understand that this is not a cookbook in the conventional sense. It's more like a food science book on a specific field.I am delighted to have this informative and well-written reference book on my shelf.

I purchased this book after reading the reviews as I am new to milling my own flour. This book has some very interesting information about grains, what kinds, how they work, how to use them. I was very impressed and have told everyone that I know to get this book if they want to get some very useful information regarding grains and milling. I can't go back to baking with regular wheat off the shelf anymore after reading this book. Whole grains are soo much better for you and milling your own is what really makes it better for you.I use the recipe for bread as my go to recipe for baking my own bread now and sometimes I switch the wheat berries to give it a different taste. Also used the stuffing recipe this last Thanksgiving and it was great, everyone loved it and wanted more. Well worth it to buy this book!

This book is a wonderful education in the world of wheat and I am very glad that I took the time to study the subject and learn about wheat, milling processes, grain nutrition, modern nutritional history (and its shortcomings), mills, and whole wheat recipes.Purchased a Nutrimill in the summer and now I use it to mill fresh flour once a week or so. I am on a quest to lose weight and improve my health by eating whole foods in appropriate amounts at appropriate times during the day, and by walking 30 minutes every day. So far, I have lost six pounds in six weeks and hope to lose a total of 30 pounds by the end of the year. And I am eating bread, cookies, bars, pies, crackers, and pasta, all made inexpensively at home with fresh milled whole wheat!For me, Flour Power was the education that gave me the will to change something very unhealthy in my life. I encourage you to read and study the book. Good luck.

I love this book, have highlighted many many pages. Trying to find grains that I can make cornbread with that will be less prone to spike my hubbys sugar, hes type 2. I found I can sprout wheat & turn it into flour & it metabolizes slower than regular store bought flour. Luv, luv all the great info I have learned...I keep reading it over & over very well written & documented with sources backing up the data. I finally found real concrete answers...I ordered a sample of berries & plan on trying many other grains...The Country Living mill is the choice I made for my mill ... we ARE what we eat!

Homeschooled for most of her life, Stargirl shows up in public high school and really shakes things up. She’s a free spirit who cares deeply about everyone else. But there is something very wrong with her according to other students. She doesn’t conform. And not conforming in public school is bad.Told from the point of view of her boyfriend, Leo, Stargirl is a quick, but emotional read. All teens should read it because pushing others to conform is common in school, but not a good idea. You never know what you might miss that would make your life better when those pushed become (or pretend to be) what you want them to be.

I enjoyed this book. I thought it was fun to read and I was interested to see what would happen to Stargirl. I was reading to my sheltered 4th and 5th graders, so some of the relationship stuff [kissing] was too much for a few of them. They were not as interested in the book, but that is my fault for trying it on a younger/immature group.

Fabulous book for girls 8-14 to read. Stargirl is very comfortable with who she is and embraces herself fully. Great role model for girls who are kind, smart, and not 'in the pack'. I give this to many young and YA girls to read and they always love it.

Read this book a long time ago. Moved and left the book in our house so I didn't got to re-read it. I chose this for a book club so I had to order it again (cheaper than flying to my house). It was a delight to read again. I picked up so much more insight the second time around. For me this is a life changing book. Bullying happens (on various scales) and it is good to be aware. I also love Stargirl's character. If I could be like her then I would be doing pretty well-we all would. Such a poignant, well-written, timely, relevant little book.

Summer reading project for my grandson. We have layered reading so I get to enjoy the books as well. Star girl is one I would recommend. Great value teaching in there. Be sure to discuss life experiences with your child while reading. We did.

If you like humor, love, and peer pressure first hand, this is the story for you. I goes through the emotions of wanting to be diffrent but not ,because of being scared of what others think.. I absolutely can't tell you how much this is true.. Every school has that one person who no one thinks much about, but you'd be surprised at what they can do. this is Stargirl.. This book is a brief catalog of landmark structures in Milwaukee, a city with an enormously important and beautiful building stock that also maintains its historical density. This book features about 150 structures within the city limits, ranging from public structures to churches to great mansions of gilded-age wealth.Although NOT an AIA publication, this small book is written and published in familiar AIA style. The entries are organized by geographic area, and are presented with a brief descriptive essay and small black & white photograph. The buildings are mostly what I would call historic, but there are also important modern examples included. The photography is purely functional. There are no plans or elevations, and maps are simple.It's a small book, so the catalog is quite selective. It's not anything approaching a comprehensive survey, but it's a nice, representative sample of Milwaukee's wonderful architecture. With a strong culture of preservation, Milwaukee is a city that deserves a comprehensive catalog of considerable length. This book fills the role relatively well while we wait for that still-to-be-published larger volume.Independently published in 1995, structures added to the cityscape after that date (obviously) are not included. Readers familiar with Dorsey & Dilts' Guide to Baltimore Architecture (Tidewater Publishers, 1997) will feel an immediate similarity between the two books.

Didn't realize it was YA when I started reading...I loved Night Film and STICP so naturally I was already on board....in fact, I didn't actually realize it was YA until after I had finished and started reading other folks reviews and I'm still not convinced it is totally YA. It's a great premise and unfolds with a pace that allows that we are a society that has seen Groundhog Day and doesn't labor on the minutiae of the purgatoria of living the same day over and over...so the pace is quite brisk. Some excellent explorations here of guilt and the darker natures of humans: what would YOU do if you had an endless supply of reset buttons at the end of your day? Smart urban (?) fantasy with great characters. Highly recommend...

Spoiler-y Song Selection: Trace the Lines by A Lot Like BirdsAfter letting it set in for a couple of days, I'm landing at a solid 4 stars and sticking with it. I don't know how to really compare this book to anything else I've ever read. I was so immersed in this story and this world that I couldn't pull myself away. I found myself questioning if this was a thing that really happened - what if every time some tragic accident/act of violence happened where only one out of many survived, the survivor was determined by an endless cycle of negotiating and reliving one day until everyone decided whose life was most worth living? I definitely recommend this book. It is a true one-of-a-kind and something that will stick with me for a while. Even if it's a kind of different that you don't end up enjoying, it's worth a shot because it's not a huge time commitment.SPOILERS AHEADI only didn't give it 5 stars because I'm one of those people that hopes that there might be an unhappy or tragic ending in like 9/10 books that I read. I expected Bee to end up committing suicide after she was spared. I was kind of disappointed that she was the one chosen to survive. Most people would be infuriated, but I felt like it could have just ended with them all fading away in the icy water because our main character and narrator hadn't survived. I assumed when Martha disappeared, it was because she was the one who had been saved.

I knew this was some sort of YA mystery-thriller, but I never thought it would take such an astonishing turn. Marisha Pessl takes you on one thrilling ride that knows no bounds. So many crazy twists and turns, every time you think you've figured it out...BAM! Sorry buddy, try again.This story follows protagonist, Beatrice Hartley, who is back in her Rhode Island hometown, attending Emerson college, living with her parents, helping them at their café and nursing her grief after the sudden death of her boyfriend and first love, a year ago at Darrow-Harker School.Beatrice had tried to forget that fateful day, when her boyfriend, Jim, mysteriously died. Everyone ruled it a suicide, but Bea knew that there was no way Jim would opt out and she was also certain that their friends knew more than they let on about that night. Since his death, Bea had completely detached herself from her friends, an elite group that had taken her in even though she came from more humble backgrounds and was not as privileged.That summer, Beatrice receives a very random text from her best friend Whitley, who invites her over to her house (mansion) to hang out just like old times. Beatrice is very tempted to go, because Jim's death is still nagging at her and she needs to know what happened to him in order to put that chapter in her life to rest. She decides to go to and see her friends again, even though her parents think it's a very bad idea.Upon her arrival, the group - consisting of Kipling, Martha, Cannon and Whitley - is slightly surprised she showed up, but quickly accept her with arms wide open that felt a bit...forced. You could sense there is tension and that the dynamic has shifted in the group in the year that's passed, but everyone was trying to act normal. They go out to a concert, and spend the night drinking and dancing without a care in the world. On the drive back home, it is raining heavily, and Whitley, who was driving, loses control of the car and almost collide with a tow truck. After the scare, they get back home drenched in rain and feeling a bit subdued. As they are drying off, they get a knock on the door and an old man speaking in old English introduces himself and tells them..."You're all nearly dead. Wedged between life and death. Time for you has become snagged on a splinter, forming a closed-circuited potentiality called a Neverworld Wake."The rules of this world are explained to them. He informs them that the driver of the tow truck is dead, and that 4 of them will also have to die, and only one can survive. They have to vote who that person will be, and it has to be a unanimous vote. Until they decide, they will be living the same day over and over and over again, in a constant time loop straight out of Groundhog Day. There's only one way to break that loop, during the last 3 minutes of their day, they will be given the chance to make their vote. Until they can reach a consensus, the loop will repeat itself, with the day playing itself out endlessly from the moment they hit the truck. Every day, they will wake up at the exact moment they hit the truck.In that time, they are able to leave, go home, see their families, live their lives normally, until they go to bed, and then they wake up repeating the same cycle, with their loved ones completely oblivious to their plight and no memory of the day before. I mean, absolutely insane. Think the violence of "A Clockwork Orange" kind of insanity. The group goes into a rampage, stealing, lying, thieving, seducing and turn into absolute monsters. When they all end up collapsing...and we are never sure how much time has passed or how many Wakes they've lived, Bea confronts them and tells them of her need to find out what happened to Jim. Enter Martha, who has figured out how they can move through time and space during the loop. They use that new knowledge to try and find out what really happened that night, and the deceptions and lies begin to reveal themselves, breaking the group apart, then bringing them back together, defeated and desperate.This is where Pessl's true skill shows as she is able to really navigate the readers through all the confusing timelines, clues and complex bits and pieces in a way that was always easy to follow and understand. As we race towards the end, and the true events of that fateful night is revealed to us, we think we have it all figured out and reach acceptance, only for Pessl to pull the rug from under us with another explosive twist.Everything we thought we know, the stereotypes that we set ourselves and other people go out the window. That is one of the many things Pessl tries to convey with this story. I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the book that really sums up that thought:"We swear we see each other, but all we are ever able to make out is a tiny porthole view of an ocean. We think we remember the past as it was, but our memories are as fantastic and flimsy as dreams. It's so easy to hate the pretty one, worship the genius, love the rock star, trust the good girl. That's never their only story. We are all anthologies. We are each thousands of pages long, filled with fairy tales and poetry, mysteries and tragedy, forgotten stories in the back no one will ever read."

This is an incredible story! Beautifully written, interesting characters about whom I cared, twisting plot continually surprising me, much wisdom throughout, still I'm not an academic so I fear I don't have the proper terminology/language to adequately describe its appeal. Obviously shorter and less complex than her first two novels, which I love too and have gifted numerous times as presents, but still compelling enough for readers like me who are (much) older than a "young adult." There are so many thought-provoking ideas jammed into this book that you might need two sessions with your book club! So, if you buy this book for your son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, nephew, or niece, definitely borrow it off their bookshelf and read it yourself, better yet buy it for your self and let them find it on your bookshelf. And if you end up agreeing with me on how enjoyable a read is, pick up Carlos Ruiz Zafon's first four books which are also "marketed" for young adults but as intriguing as his Cemetery of Forgotten Books tetralogy.

This was a huge waste. The author had a great premise to work with and totally wasted the opportunity. She kept tossing out totally nonsensical stuff. Real people wouldn't act like that. At times it sounded like her characters were on drugs and had forgotten how to think. I hung in there, hoping against hope that there might be a story in there, somewhere. There wasn't. Save your time and money. Get a good book and enjoy.

I didn’t even know this was out there until I was browsing on Amazon, and what a pleasure to find. I adored NIGHT FILM and while this is YA it’s sure to delight anybof Pessl’s fans - dark, creepy, a delightful mystery/thriller full of complexity (actually she could have gone further and I wish she had).I didn’t want to leave this strange world.
