Reading this book was so amazing because I actually felt like Ms. Novack was talking directly to me. Her voice in this book was understanding and kind while addressing some very tough topics. How do I start to prepare? What should I wear to an audition? Who will be there? What if I forget my lines or make a mistake? Do I stand or sit during an audition? All of these questions and many others are answered while we learn how to prepare for the entire audition process. Ms. Novack chooses various scenes to give the reader ideas about how to prepare for the many different kinds of questions which might come up. There are situations that could make an actor very uneasy while getting ready to do an audition. Ms. Novack addresses these situations and solves many of the challenging thoughts that an actor may have before an audition. The actor does not have to fret about it any longer. An example of this would be, do I use a prop or not? In this book Ms. Novack explains whether or not to use a prop and if it's not appropriate to use one, what to do instead . She addresses that issue and so very many more. I loved every page of this book. It was not at all like reading a "How To" book. Reading this book actually felt like I was like having a good friend sitting across from me in a coffee shop and explaining to me how to make my auditions really good.

This is one of the most helpful books you will find on auditioning/and acting in general. Everything you want to know is here, easy to read and easy to understand. I couldn’t recommend it more!!!

This book helped me feel sooo much more prepared for auditions-- I finally started getting callbacks! It made me feel like I could actually do my BEST WORK in the audition room, and show them how good an actor I am, rather than being paralyzed by my nerves. It's direct and easy to follow!

This Book of Spells is well written and covers a lot of details. I don't know enough yet to comment on accuracy, but I would recommend it as a good starting point.

Arrived quickly! My great grandmother and grandma were wiccans and I recently just became very interested and decided to purchase the book, has a lot of interesting spells my dad who is also a Wiccan looked over it and approves(: probably going to buy a couple more books!

Contained a lot more than I had thought (after reading some of the reviews before purchasing). Reasons why to sometimes not believe everything people have to say about a product. Looks very interesting. Can't wait to hear what my grandpa has to say. Got this for his birthday since he is a proclaimed wiccan. The ingredients for the spells are very easy to attain as well.

Theirs nothing in this "book" that you won't find on any cheesy spell web page online. It's a joke! I'm just glad I bought it cheap enough that I don't feel totally ripped off. Not a single picture in the book.. Seems like she will turn anything into a spell such as the "Magic Motivation Morning Potion" COFFEE, cinnamon, honey. Seriously!?.Get WICCAPEDIA instead.

Another amazing book by Lisa Chamberlain. To be honest I'm not surprised since this is the 10th book of hers I've read (4th book of her's I've read today). This book provides many useful spells for begginers, many of which I'm excited to try. Great for beginning practitioners need some simple spells to start with.

This book offers a range of spells, mostly focusing on the ones that most people use frequently (love, money, health).

A little short, but useful, and well written. A good beginning Book of Shadows

A nice beginning but could contain a lot more. There seems to be a never-ending series of these slim books. Wish there were an unabridged tome or two (or three or ...) instead of these skinny books. Still, it is nicely written and easy to understand. Just wish there was more to it.

Well written in an informative way. However, I feel that the book could delve much deeper into the essence of Wicca. Also, it is very short, because my trained eye can see that the person behind the book wants to split things up into as many books as possible (more sales for less effort) and that a ghostwriter very likely created these book series on payment order, and that is why the book is informative rather than deep and personal, and the author shows no image of herself (read himself). There is a tiny chance that I am wrong-ish, though!

I was waiting for this book and got it on the same day it was released. I am very interested in WW2 fiction and Shanghai Story didn't dissapoint. A part of WW2 history that I never knew about. I was suprised to read that China allowed the Jews to enter their country with no restrictions when other countries denied them entry. For me that's what made the story so interesting. Clark took an American name when he was studying in the US. He comes home with the intention of helping his father in the family busniss. When he meats Eden, a Jewish refugee, when he brings a thank you gift to her father, a doctor who had treated his father.Clark takes a job with the government and soon finds that corruption and bribes rule Shanghai. Eden calls on Clark for help when she is accused of murder and the more they see of each other the more they can feel an attraction to each other. Clark now has to find a way out of the arranged marriage. This book not only has a love story but it's a history lesson. Alexa Kang has written a story that makes you want to keep reading. I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the series.

The story begins with Clark (Yaun Guo-Hui) arriving in China after six-years. He has been studying in America and is returning to help his father with the family business. (He has adapted the American Westernized name of "Clark" to fit in with the other students).The next day his mother sends him to visit his father's doctor to thank him for a favor he granted his father. There he meets the Levine family. A Jewish family from Munich escaping the Nazi's. They have found refugee asylum in Shanghai without restrictions after other countries rejected them. Clark is immediately smitten with the beautiful Eden Levine; the daughter of the couple. He volunteers to walk her to visit a friend after dinner where they get to know each other. Later in the book. Clark meets his friend Tang Wei who tells him about a secret communist group inside the government called the KMT and asks Clark to be secret agent for KMT and to spy on them for the sake of his country. Clark considers it. He then takes a government job only to find things are not what they seem. Meanwhile, Eden one day asks Clark to help her when she is accused of murder. No spoilers. You will just have to read the book to find out more. Lol. I finally finished this book on Monday. This book was really an interesting. It kind of reminded me of the movie "Casablanca" the do or die part anyway. ( That's my opinion) lol. Like another reviewer said already. I didn't know that Shanghai accepted Jewish refugees in without restrictions. That was interesting to learn. This book kept my interest from beginning to end. I loved the characters of Eden and Clark and their forbidden love of a time of War. I look forward to reading more of Eden and Clark's story in this series. I received this book from Hidden Gems without payment for an honest review and then bought the book after b/c I wanted it for my home library. Lol. 5stars. Very nicely done.

This book should have been edited down. The characters were as boring as watching grass grow. What could have been an interesting segment of the story, a trip to Kaifeng to learn about a small population of Chinese Jewish people stopped short and went no where. I've read several accounts and novels, about Jewish people who escaped Nazi Germany and settled in Shanghai China. This is a very interesting topic and this story just didn't measure up. I am not going to read the sequels to this trilogy.

Shanghai Story is a new and refreshing genre of the Second World War. A young westernized Chinese student (Clark) and a Jewish refugee (Eden) meet in the city of Shanghai. Together they must learn to navigate the political fractions within the city and the age old divisions of race and tradition. As they trust in each other they come to realize that they must make their own way, a new way, which defies the old and embraces a new thinking. The history is vivid and the characters are believable. The book held my interest all the way through. I highly await the second book in the series and I would recommend this book to anyone.

Don't start reading this book at 5PM as I did or you will find yourself releasing a satisfied sigh at 5AM as you sadly put it aside until the next of Eden and Clark's adventures is ready for publication. Congratulations Alexa, for a gripping well written, well edited work. Obviously, I enjoyed it from start to finish. I was particularly taken by the author's delicate but presumable accurate portrayal of Madam Chiang whom I happened to meet while visiting my grandparents in Wartime Washington DC.

The intricacies of corruption in China can leave one's head spinning. From financial support to tradition, escaping the chains of war was impossible. For the Jewish families who fled Hitler's Germany, cultures collided. While Shanghai became a melting pot of ethnicity, the Chinese were oppressed in their own country. Bringing this history is to light is well done in this book. Even though the end sets the tone for the next book in the trilogy, it was weak.

One of the best stories I have read this year. I have read all of Alexa Kang's stories so I knew I had to purchase this one. Although I have been reading WW2-era fiction and non-fiction books for years I'm not that familiar with China during the 30s-40s, so this was extremely interesting. Fascinating read. Cannot wait for the next one.

First of all, I follow this author due to her excellent writing and her characters. The scenery of Shanghai and the relationships of the characters were absolutely wonderful. I'm definately looking forward to her next book. I wouldn't miss it for anything!

Excellent ideas presented. In examining one's existence one should read first Socrates, then Kierkegaard and then Fromm... This is a collection of essays/lectures concerning the way one makes decisions to compromise on the values held dear, the language we use to describe them and how a therapist relates to the patient. The art of listening is an essential part of modern mindfulness. Listening to one's self as we relate to both the internal and the external... How we adjust ourselves to become happy or clear think and thoughtful. We must first be ready to relate as a whole individual and second to actually relate. Fromm jumps back and forth as though in a debate with Frued and Jung, but his ideas are clear and concise, easy to understand and easy to implement... Brilliant!!!

Listening is the art of catharsis. Catharsis is not the product of speaking or free association as one might think because it does not occur if we wander about saying the same thing in our homes. Lying alone on a couch speaking the same words produce no affective change. It is in the art of careful listening that the healing process occurs. While the very end of this book deals with that art the use of this title is a misnomer for the bulk of the content. But in Fromm style, the academic thoroughness makes him a great summarizer and synthesizer of the Vienna Analytical Movement. The reader should know that another less known hero coaches him from the shadows. Karen Horney his senior and mentor can be heard between the lines, thoroughly present in spirit in this and many of Fromm's works.

Interesting at first, but eventually it lost my interest. I will go back and try it again one day. I expected it to be a lot about how to be a great listener, but really it is more of an explanation of psychoanalysis.

Fromm has always been a favorite of mine, "The Art of Loving" continuously on our book shelves, in fact while looking for another addition as a gift was when I stumbled on Fromm's "The Art of Listening" . It was one of Fromm's unpublished books recently released, and a treasure. Well written sensible, everyone listens, it's just that most of us don't do it very well, and this book helps to really move that skill up a notch. A great companion to the Art of Loving, in different time it could have been the prequel. Try it you'll like it, a great read, written with Fromm's sensible but interesting, scattered with anecdotes, it's on my gift list for this year.

I expected a book on listening and the art of conversation. It is instead a textbook for Psychiatrists and the title is derived from the last chapter. Not what I wanted and the title was misleading for me, but probably not if you were a young psychoanalyst in training.

Though it was composed from lectures plus other formal and even informal contacts with Fromm, it speaks with his voice and presents his thinking on issures not earlier addresses in his published works.Though it's constructed from Fromm's oral lectures and other formal and informal talks it speaks with his voice and deals with important issuers not addressed in his former written works. A major addition to the understanding Fromms positions on some critical aspects of psychotherapy and life.a real

Excellent summary of the therapeutic process. Many valuable insights. Short and informal, easily read and very accessible. I recommend it highly to patients or therapists.

It was a relief to receive this book - a Christmas gift - and find it to be a full size hardbound book as promised. (We have had some disappointments in the past.) This was the ONLY book to contain the information my husband has been looking for .. something he remembered from college 50 years ago. No other bookstore or library, or even Google, could help us.

I am very nostalgic about living in Shanghai, and I like food. The basic idea of the book sounded fun, even if I was suspicious from the low number of reviews and because it's written by the local English paper. Anyway, I kept my eye on it as the price dropped from like thirty to ten, and finally decided to just give it a try.I made the wrong decision. Book is terrible. Basically, it's just a bunch of restaurant reviews of the sort of places a wealthy ex-pat might go to. The reviews are boring, just breathlessly positive with no real insight into food culture or Shanghai. They were clearly written by somebody with little experience in using the English language. There's a whole lot of color photographs, but the photographs are not great (often very small, and showing the table setup more than the food), plus the book is printed on shoddy paper with shoddy ink, so the colors are all weird.

Después de leer este libro de Mark, estoy seguro que tu vida será más ligera y tendrá un sentido más claro sobre lo que es realmente importante.

Considero que representa un nuevo tipo de lectura alejada de las falsas promesas motivaciones que tanto están de moda. Hay que aprender a aceptar la vida como es, una montaña rusa de emociones y sucesos el aceptar los fracasos y las derrotas nos dan las herramientas necesarias para volver a empezar pero cada vez con mayor experiencia, madurez y con la tranquilidad de que conocemos el fondo del abismo.

La idea en general se pudo haber escrito en un articulo. Lectura entretenida al inicio, pero a ratos se vuelve aburrida. El autor cuenta sus vivencias y como deberia ver el mundo, aunque no sabemos realmente si lo hace como dice, pero en general un punto de vista diferente.

Un gran libro que nos ayuda a ver que la vida es extraordinaria, que en realidad saber que estás vivo y ser consciente de ello es el verdadero éxito en la vida.

Faácil de leer, con buenas enseñanzas y anecdotas que te recuerdan como sobrellevar situaciones de la vida. No es un libro que descubra cosas nuevas, pero te guía desde una perspectiva poco común. Recomiendo su lectura.
