I rarely read books more than once. But my continuing interest in all things Korean and my appreciation of Cumings' book induced me to read it a second time.Cumings has a unique perspective on Korea not just as a scholar, but also as someone who has a personal connection with Korea going back to at least the 1960s. His perspective is not ideological -- not left or right. A good example is his two chapters on modern Korean history. In the first, he presents the positive aspects of the regime of Park Chun Hee, and how Korea went from a 3rd world country to an industrial powerhouse. In the second, he discusses the brutal measures used to get Korea there and the heroism of those who fought it. (He's not ideological, but he's definitely pro-Korean.) He's no fan of North Korea, but does a good job of trying to understand why they are the way they are, and to see the current regime in light of Korean history.

I like the information provided in this book. It quickly covers the ancient kingdoms and how they became Korea, then slows down to focus on more recent history. Cumings seems to be quite knowledgable and does great research, but I do not care for his writing style. Multiple times I found myself groaning or rolling my eyes because of an unnecessary, seemingly conceited reference to an aspect of his personal life. This would be fine if found in the preface, maybe to emphasize his personal ties and how he came to be an expert. But suddenly mentioning his wife's family when talking about a town in modern North Korea did not seem relevant.

Really eye opening history of Korea. Starts with ancient Korean history to 1890. In 1890 the West decided to "open" Korea against it's will. Around 1906, the West (Including the USA) gave Korea to Japan, as a colony, until 1946. After that, the West split Korea, North & South, due to the Cold War. Today, the Two Koreas remain as an artifact of the Cold War. Reunification is a chimera, like the Holy Grail.First published in 2001 & updated in 2005, before Donald Trump & Kim Jong-Un.

A comprehensive, well-organized, and serious work, filled with interesting observations and comparisons, reflecting serious study and deep sympathy for the subject. As a PhD in political science with a specialty in international affairs, but limited knowledge of Asia, I found this book the most valuable history available in English.

This book is full of revisionist history about the Korean War. Examples include how POTUS didn’t have a firm grip on his staff and military commanders, and didn’t make the call on committing US forces to combat. Also, the author states that South Korea prompted the war by sending ~400 soldiers in the Kaesong heights area in 1949–never mind the 38,000 initially and ultimately 100k troops sent by nK southward in Jun 1950 with Mao’s and Staljn’s blessing.

Good factual book

Interesting book but rather out of date. Would prefer more current information since N. Korea is continually evolving.

While I found Cumming's writing to be very biased, Korea's Place in the Sun is an interesting read. The author's use of emotive language and a mixture of personal experience and historical facts is also interesting.

It's repetition without redundancy.For instance, multiplication is explained by grouping of similar items within sets on one page (3 pretzels each in four different lunch boxes equals how many pretzels?), followed by the number line skip counting on another page (counting by 2s or 3s) and the traditional multiplication table on yet another page. It's the same idea - multiplication - presented several different ways to ensure comprehensive understanding of factors and products.All pages are in full color with clear, engaging graphics and easy-to-read and follow instructions. As always, each Sylvan book allows plenty of space between problems to compute answers.There are only 118 pages to this Basic book. But it covers all the major areas such as regrouping, multiplication, division (particularly well done in this workbook), fractions, weights, measuring, volume and shapes. When your child completes this book they will be ready for Third Grade Super Math Success (Sylvan Super Workbooks) (Math Super Workbooks).

Great for a child who needs more than just one or two pages and then moves on without memorizing things. These books have page after page after page of problems that the child needs to know repetitive work means they will memorize it. I homeschool all 4 of my kids, and use this alongside all curriculums I use. Great for visual learners.

This book is very colorful and simple and a great introduction to 3rd grade math. However, there aren't very many problems on each page, so kids won't get (in my opinion) enough practice to cement the learning. This has been a great book for my kids who don't really like school work but like to feel like they're making progress because it goes fast.

Got it in the mail... Couple days late but that's ok. It seems to cover the most basic 3rd grade mathematics and has bright colorful attractive pages with examples on each page. I am looking forward to using this with my son.

Thin with few problems and almost no word problems which is what my granddaughters curriculum seems to be based around. Mainly a big advertisement for signing up for tutoring by Sylvan, which they don't offer where we live.

In this second book of the Baker Street Cozy Mysteries series, our heroine Georgie Tanner has taken a tour group to watch a Revolutionary War reenactment. When a real bullet is used and one of the reenactors is killed, Georgie is drawn into solving the murder. There are several good suspects, and Georgie seems to be on the spot when a new clue emerges.I enjoyed this book though maybe not quite as much as the first book in the series. I like that there was more information about Georgie's lost fiance and I can see a growing romantic relationship with Frank. The supporting characters are always fun; Oscar, the neighbor, is a great addition. However, there were enough proofreading errors to distract in reading, and I also thought there were a few plot holes that weren't resolved (was Patrick Armstrong a good guy or not, why would a museum advertise a new find without actually holding it and establishing provenance).Anyway, it's still a good read, but I'd rate it three and a half stars. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

I love the reenactment setting of this book! It created such a fun cast of characters and suspects. While I loved the first in the series, I liked this one even better, especially because of Georgie's relationship with Frank. I like how they're slowly realizing that they like each other and I'm a total sucker for the teasing banter between the two of them. I was honestly guessing until the very end with this killer and the twists made the last section speed by. Can't wait until book 3!

This very entertaining novel takes us to a Revolutionary War battle. General Washington, now President, resumes his uniform to lead a battle against the Whiskey Rebellion. Every year a reenactment of this battle is fought using replica rifles etc. This year the crowd, including Baker Street Bed and Breakfast Tourists are shocked when the opening volley leaves a general on the field...dead.Georgie Tanner, tour guide of the B & B has a mixed group with her on the fateful day. In fact, one of the businessmen actually tells her about the differences in artillery. This difference leads to finding the murder weapon but, with the victim having so many enemy's this case will be hard to solve.I was very entertained by this story line and the characters are so believable. Good series.

Georgie Tanner who moved back to work at her Aunt Cecelia's B&B helping her out in addition to taking the guests on tours of historic Gainsville, PA. She moved back home after her fiancé died, trying to get her life back together. Cecelia's grandson Frank is with the Sheriff's department and grew up with Georgie. The characters are developing and new ones are added. Her friend Kari from High School is in this book. Plus new people are always at the B&B. I totally enjoyed this book easy reading. New books are coming to the Baker Street Mystery Series.

During the annual re-enactment of a revolutionary war battle, Patrick Armstrong, the high school history teacher, is shot and killed. There has been an ongoing dispute between Patrick and his neighbor, Terry Brooks. Since Terry was the person who fired the fatal shot, he is the most obvious suspect.As the Tour Guide for the Baker Street B&B, Georgie escorts tourists to the various sites and events around town. One of the tourists that Georgie brought to the re-enactment is a curator from a New York Museum and he points out that the rifle used by Terry is not an authentic rifle from that period. This realization only makes Terry look more guilty. Terry claims that his regular rifle was missing and that he took the only one left on the table.Although Patrick appears to have been well liked by his students, he was known to have had problems with other people in the community.Is Terry really guilty or is he being framed? Can Georgie figure out who was responsible for Patrick's death?The trivia details and historical information from these books is great and really adds to the story.

Taking guests to the reenactment turns out to be murder for the history teacher. Georgie ends up in the middle of the investigation. She just be to figure out what happened to clear her friend.

Well Georgie is in the middle again! Taking her Aunt Cecelia’s B&B guests to a battle re-enactment Georgie finds herself involved in another murder mystery. As in book 1 lots of suspects with motives galore. Is the killer a disgruntled student, an unhappy football player’s father, a fellow teacher, a B&B guest, even an estranged brother? Georgie realizes that she needs closure to this death especially because she has never received any from the death of her fiancé. While she finds herself in quite a few scary situations, Georgie keeps her head & saves herself. I enjoy watching the blossoming of Georgie’s relationship with Frank. Aunt Cecelia’s curmudgeonly neighbor, Oscar, makes me smile as he responds to Georgie’s offers of friendship, too. It’s good to see Georgie finally moving forward with her life. Besides being a well-plotted mystery, there is a bonus addition of a delicious “cookie” recipe that I can’t wait to try! Chocolate & marshmallows, yum!!

The Baker Street series is a cozy, thoroughly enjoyable read. Fans of CeeCee James won't be disappointed- this may be my favorite of hers yet. No spoilers. Interesting and likable characters plus a knotty mystery with a side of will-they-ever-realize-they-are-perfect-together? Throw in a mystery that hangs over our heroines head and you have a wonderful book to curl up with.

This book was a good read for a person interested in religion, in philosophy and in chasidus. However, it was an extremely difficult book to understand, and it requires a good deal of knowledge in the area of Jewish mysticism before it even begins to try to discuss G-d. Not to mention an investment of time.All the same, I recommend this book - with the caveat that the person who takes up this book read it seriously, beginning with simpler books of the essence of Chasidic teaching. Bringing Heaven Down to Earth: Meditations and Everyday Wisdom from the Teachings of the Rebbe, Menachem Schneerson is a better book to begin with. True Existence is the next step.

Am so enjoying this book. Layer upon layer of deep spiritual insight awaits the reader. Would highly recommend to all searchers!

I gave this book five stars--I should point out that even in English it is difficult--perhaps the translators intention. For example often it is difficult to find the antecedent to a particular pronoun.I read this book first because it is one of the few I could find in English written by an Algerian (Feraoun was Kabyle and spoke no Arabic ironically) second because it is nuanced and though pro-FLN is not propaganda. I should state that after what my father told me he had witnessed at Setif in 1945 I am perfectly content with the most extreme condemnation of the French whose conduct makes any sanctimonious condemnation of "the brutality of Islam" a farce. (I should add the US follows the French --even to the point of having former French torturers train US army soldiers--this is verifiable ((see latest editition of The Question--by Alleg for verification)). Nevertheless I felt that the views of a "moderate"--and at the time one of Algeria's greatest writers should be respected--and indeed they complicate the whole problematic of the war--though not for me. I do not like propaganda and am not oblivious to the savagery of the war on both sides. But now more knowledable say about FLN's "brutality" my support for them has not wavered only grown. Anti-Colonial fighting is not a sentimental business and the FLN did things it should not have in my opinion. Having said that however it is well to remember that NONE of this would have happened had the French not decided to invade Algeria in 1830--had they not locked up whole communities in caves during the 19th century --and let them starve to death. Even Pontecorvo's great film does not present the real savagery of the French who are in the end responsible for ALL of the deaths of the Algerians between 1954-62 (1/9 of the whole muslim population) WHETHER OR NOT "indigenes" were killed by the liberation forces. It is the same in Iraq Afghanistan and Palestine.Feraoun--friend of Camus, lover of French culture--a man who deplored the few French "improvements" destroyed by the Liberation forces--a man who loved France and Algeria was murdered by the OAS three days before the war ceased.

That sentence from Mouloud Feraoun's JOURNAL, 1955-1962 summarizes the Algerian War of Independence as he experienced it. JOURNAL is one of the major, if lesser-known, eyewitness accounts of the political atrocities that marked the twentieth century. It belongs in the same group of books as Primo Levi's "If This Is a Man" and Eugenia Ginzburg's "Journey into the Whirlwind". Hitler's Holocaust and Stalin's Gulag are much better known, but for many Muslim Algerians caught up in the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962), life was almost as hellish.Feraoun lived through that maelstrom as a Muslim Berber from Kabylia. In November 1955 he began writing a journal from the maw of the War of Independence. He was one of the most respected writers in colonial Algeria and a friend of such noted figures as Emmanuel Robles and Albert Camus. He also was a schoolteacher, living in Fort-National, in the middle of Kabylia. In July 1957, due to the death and mayhem that had overwhelmed the Kabylie, Feraoun and his family moved to a suburb of Algiers. (That was during the Battle of Algiers, but still Algiers was safer, less violent, than was Kabylia.) Feraoun continued to live in the vicinity of Algiers until March 15, 1962, when he was assassinated by the fascist OAS just days before the cease-fire ending the French-Algerian war.Reading JOURNAL, 1955-1962 is profoundly depressing. It contains a litany of barbarities; it is a testament of inhumanity. Time and again, it documents physical torture. Example: A friend tells Feraoun: "What got me talking more than anything else is the spring * * *. It is a tool that is introduced into the anus and that increases in size when they push on the spring. Then they pull it out brutally, and you feel your entrails tear." Torture leads to false confessions, which lead to more arrests and more torture and more deaths. JOURNAL also documents psychological torture, both of individuals and of entire towns and, indeed, of all native Algerians.Who are the native Algerians? The French wanted to think that Algeria was part of France and that there were such people as "French Algerians". Feraoun would have none of that. "This people of eight million men is not French, and on its soil the French * * * are battling for the sole purpose of deciding the manner in which they are going to continue to impose their will upon it, to continue to live there, to continue to exploit and despise it, in the name of imperishable principles, in order to fulfill a highly civilizing mission."But Feraoun's world was not an either/or world. His implacable anti-colonialism did not place him in the camp of the FLN. In January 1956, he wrote: "The rebels' expectations are both excessive and disappointing. They include prohibitions of all kinds, nothing but prohibitions, dictated by the most obtuse fanaticism, the most intransigent racism, and the most authoritarian fist. In a way, this is true terrorism." In March 1956, he asked: "Can people who kill innocents in cold blood be called liberators? If so, have they considered for a moment that their 'violence' will engender more 'violence,' will legitimize it, and will hasten its terrible manifestation?"Curiously, JOURNAL, 1955-1962 was written in French. (Feraoun, who was born in 1913, was one of the Muslim elite of Algeria and he was educated within the French system. He also spoke Tamazight, the native Kabyle language, but he did not speak or write Arabic. There was, in fact, much friction and some violence between the Berbers and the Arabs, but Islam and anti-colonialist sentiments tended to unite the two groups. Certainly, the French looked down on and exploited both of them.) JOURNAL has long been known to be one of the seminal documents of the Algerian War of Independence. Alistair Horne lists it as one of his sources for his classic account of the War, "A Savage War of Peace". But it was only in 2000, with the publication of this volume, that it was made available in English.James D. Le Sueur, a French professor of history, contributes a useful forty-page introduction. In it, he compares Feraoun and his JOURNAL with Frantz Fanon and his "Wretched of the Earth". Le Sueur discusses how Feraoun and Fanon "held antithetical views on violence." "For Feraoun, the question was not whether violence could be used, when need be, as a response to colonial oppression but was a matter of when violence should stop and what the effects of violence were." Feraoun feared that the unrestrained, often unprincipled, violence of the FLN would result in a new "colonization" and a social environment that would breed yet more violence after independence. In this regard, Feraoun was prescient. Le Sueur concludes: "Because [Feraoun] was alive and writing throughout the war, his insights into the apocalyptic violence of decolonization are far more revealing than theories written about the conflict out of harm's way, especially the observations written by Fanon in 'The Wretched of the Earth' and celebrated by Sartre in his preface to that book."It is not always easy to follow Feraoun. Often his reactions to events happening around him -- in his town, outside his house on the street, to people he knows -- are raw. Sometimes his writing is impressionistic. Sometimes he is not altogether logical, and occasionally he contradicts himself. He often refers to people by a single initial, and one also has to deal with a kaleidoscopic alphabet stew of organizations -- FLN, SAS, ALN, CRUA, MNA, SAU, OAS, etc. But the book is not inordinately difficult, and it is very rewarding. Certainly any student of the Algerian War of Independence should read it.

There are a few important works on the Algerian Civil War available for the English reader. Franz Fannon, Alistair Horne's history, the film "Battle of Algiers, and recently Feraoun's diary are the ones that readily come to mind. Feraoun was a western educated Algerian and well accquainted with the French. His desire for an independent Algeria was strong, but tempered by a strong sense of historical reality. He reveals the day to day impact of the violence. It is in this respect that the work is most moving, and reveals the senselessness and degradation that occurs to all people involved, Feraoun eventually a victim himself. An essential view of the psychological costs of guerrilla and anti-colonial war.
