The book is beautifully illustrated and the overall sentiment is sweet but it sort of seems disjointed. It lacks a flow with content going from general folk-type statements to statements about ancestors to how to cope when people aren't kind to you. It's meant to be a letter from a father to a daughter but it just reads like random statements that don't really feel like they work together or even communicate a point. For this reason it makes it difficult to engage in the story. I had hoped for a little more substance that would help introduce my daughter to a different religion and culture but unfortunately this book doesn't do that.

I loved reading this book. It is so simple, yet poetic. I do not have kids yet, but I plan to read this to them when I do iA. I also enjoy that this book highlights that Latinos can be Muslim, too. I have yet to see another book like this that makes Muslim Latino youth feel included and that they belong. Excellent work, Mark!

A gorgeous, gorgeous book. I bought it to read to my 5 and 8yo. We are neither Muslim nor Hispanic, but you don't need to be either to appreciate a beautiful book that celebrates the fact that strength and beauty come from diverse experiences and perspectives. This book was an interesting read as it talks about various cultures, but most importantly it gives ideas on why the culture adopt and the ideas and beliefs that it has. For instance, it gives the reason that males fear their female partner committing infidelity because of the possibility of them having to care for any possible offsprings that results from the relationship. Whereas, females are afraid in losing their male "provider".Even though the book was originally required for me during my college years, I still find myself rereading it now and then as it is a good read.You will find many interesting theories and ideas from the book.

Great book, but can become boring if you spend long amounts of time reading it. I didn't notice it before buying it, but the cover says that it should't be sold in the US. It worked just fine for the class that I was taking though. It brought up how must psychology is fake because it only focuses on college students in America. Tons of interesting topics that challenge modern accepted psychological facts. Overall this is a very interesting book about psychology. May not be good for someone who is just starting to learn about psychology because it barely covers the american studies.

Had to buy it for my psychology class. I love reading even reading textbooks but I had to force myself to read this.

Interesting moments but as pointed out during the entirety of the book, the theories are only generalisations of different cultures. If you don’t live it, you will never truly know it.

This book was required for a course. The authors writting style is aweful! I ended up reading the chapter objectives, then researching using other sources. The concepts covered are important, but unreadable.

The information is great, but it's the matter of getting the information that is the issue I have with this book. Keywords are not in bold, and sections are difficult to navigate with little to no headings. If you need this book, then you should obviously get it, but if you're looking for a textbook to just read and learn from, I would not recommend this.

Great little booklet to have in my quilting library! Initially I thought to whip up a quick flannel rag quilt to place on my chest in the foyer for the holidays..but after seeing more possibilities in this booklet I am convinced that I will sew more for gift giving and my grandchildren will love them in the guest bedrooms for their overnight visits! I plan to do some experimenting with the minky fabric that I have on hand here. Not sure how it would work as a backing with flannel in the middle and cotton on the top but we will see. I plan to use a half inch seam allowance vs 3/4 in as I prefer a less shaggy look. Glad I purchased this simple book BC it also includes nice layouts for my all time favorite..the half square triangle. I love quilts done by a long arm machine for some things but between this book and the quilt as you go method I know that I will be sewing many more quilts as gifts now. Perfect. My husband has 8 brothers and sisters( huge Italian family!) and there are certain to be many many baby showers coming along in the near future!

This is an excellent book. The writing is clear, easy to understand. The pictures of all the beautiful quilts made me want to try making a rag quilt right away. I highly recommend this book for beginners such as myself, I love sewing, but panic when I see patterns. Quilting is different, and the rag quilting is a little forgiving if you make a mistake.

This truly is a book for beginners. I appreciate the clear, step-by-step instructions and tips. The book is organized logically, and the illustrations are very helpful, as are the patterns. I am disappointed in the small number of designs/projects included--I was expecting more than 3 basic projects. There are several variations of the triangle layouts but besides those, there are only the basic strip and the square layouts.More variations of those would have been nice, especially for those of us who need that assistance when it comes to design creativity. I made a quilt for my grandson's toddler bed out of flannel using a basic squares layout, and he loves it..and so do I. It is a perfect weight and very snuggly. I can't wait to get started on another one.

I bought this book because I wanted to make a rag quilt. I had a general idea how the process should work, but decided it would be best to get REAL instructions BEFORE I started my project. One of the best decisions I've made!!! Who knew you could make rag quilts out is something besides plain squares!!! This is a great book for beginning quilters,..... or people like me who have a good idea of how the process should work....but need a few pointers. My favorite part was learning an easy way to make the edges of the quilt look extra full.

Very clear instructions. I was able to make my first rag quilt without any problems. It turned out beautifully. The photo illustrations are great. I am starting my second quilt .I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn to make a beautiful rag quilt. Several variations are included.

So... DevOps.DevOps is this mythical assembly line of progress that gets code from point A to point B in record time, and by record time, I mean no time. Coded, auto-tested, out the door, bing, bang, boom. The book was an entertaining read (and/or listen) and the authors cleverly couch the concepts of DevOps into a story about a failed delivery system (The Phoenix Project) built ala WaterFall, versus a new system hastily assembled (heh, see what I did there?) on an impromptu assembly line and delivered in record time, performing brilliantly - when compared to the failed behemoth Phoenix Project.So... here's the problem with DevOps, and the problem with this book.Companies with a nightmarish legacy code base (delivered or not as-of-yet out the door) that are attempting to build DevOps are using the same people that created their behemoth nightmare in the first place. As does the company in the hypothetical story in the book. Worse. The CEO in the book is a horribly bad boss, making wrong decision after wrong decision (I am sure to ramp up the tension to illustrate the saving graces of DevOps). So, I can tell you definitively that ANY company with leadership like that would lose their brilliant techs almost immediately. The market is in desperate need of brilliant techs so there is zero possibility that they are going to stick around a cess pool of politics when they can get a signing bonus and a raise from a company already doing it better and faster, and all without the drama. I'm just saying. And in order to pull off a DevOps operation, you absolutely need brilliant techs. You need tight, well executed product code with sufficient testing hooks so you can automate as you go. So you need brilliant QA that can understand and/or code the hooks right along-side the devs.In short, you need a whole lot more than a single Brent. You just do. And to imagine that there are a room full of brilliant techs writing broken down shoddy bloated code for Phoenix, but then can turn around and write the brilliantly architected code you need for the DevOps project... well... I am able to suspend belief when called upon, but this was more like taking it out back, shooting it, and burying it six feet under. I'm just sayin'.And with that being said, I am a huge, ginormous fan of DevOps (and the book was a FUN read / listen, thus the 4 stars instead of 3). It just takes an incredible talent pool to pull DevOps off and books like this makes companies think they just have to implement this process with the talent they have and poof! instant quality software that can be delivered instantaneously! Woohoo! They would be better served facing the reality of the mess they have, caused by (possibly) a lack of reasonable process, yah, but almost certainly by lack of talent as well. That's basically how they got where they got.Off soap box now. Doing the tango. Eating Oreos. Feel free to join!

The Phoenix Project is a business book masquerading as a work of fiction. As soon as I started evaluating The Phoenix Project in the context of a business book, rather than fiction, I started enjoying it a lot more, gaining much more insight into the concepts presented, rather than focusing on the unsophisticated prose and highly contrived scenarios. The "plot" serves as a vehicle for the authors to explore and pontificate on the business ideologies presented throughout. The main character, Bill, is mentored through each of these concepts, implementing them for the benefit of the reader to see the dramatic impact each can have on a business. For the most part, this is well executed, but it can become tedious when the characters "furiously take notes, so that they can google the terms later." Yes, the authors really write this, banging the reader of the head with, "Hey Dummy, are you paying attention? This is important."One of the best parts of the book was actually after the fictional plot ended, and the authors took the extra time to collect the concepts presented and revist them in a brief summary at the end. I hoped for this, as going back through The Phoenix Project to find each in turn, and learn more would have been difficult. If I could suggest to the authors an improvement, it would be to break the 4th wall during the fictional telling of the plot, and provide footnotes or references to the reader referencing where in the summary section they can read a bit more about a given concept. Nothing would be lost by this approach, as the reader quicky realizes the point and purpose of the plot anyways.Overall, The Phoenix Project provides an easy way for non-business people to get their feet wet with process improvements, without making the explanations and concepts too burdensome. I find myself quoting passages with co-workers who've also read the book, realizing that all too many of the scenarios presented are real life problems we face everyday (though perhaps less severely than in the Phoenix Project.) As such, I know I've already taken something away from the book, even if I won't have a chance to master every improvement, or even experiment with them all. It provides a new way of thinking about software development, and all the organizations it impacts. Four stars.

I have found a great way to eat more salads and low calorie foods and am already down 5 pounds since beginning. More than that, this book helps you with your lifestyle choices and keeps you focused on your goals. Another book that had also helped me on this weight loss endeavor is 50 Healthy Slow Cooker Recipes: 50 Simple and Healthy Recipes for Slow Cooked Meals. I am a Southern girl and grew up with my mom cooking in a slow cooker often, so it was nice to eat some of these comfort foods and still stay on track. And the best part is, when I come home from a busy day of class and work, dinner is already made! I would definitely recommend both of these books to those who are looking for weight loss that is healthy!

I just got this book and felt like something spicy, so chose #6 Indian Kachumber Salad. I picked up a few ingredients from the store and assembled it. I was a little concerned when the summary mentioned lemon juice and sugar, while the recipe states lime juice and has no sugar. I went with the recipe and used the lime. All I can say is...AMAZING! I have never had any salad recipe taste this phenomenal! I was going to make a main dish to go along with the salad, but I think I'll just eat more salad and skip the main dish. After tasting this recipe, I can't wait to try some others! Well worth the price!

I was waiting to write a review until I came up with a better name for the Pear, Watercress, Hazelnut, Beetroot, Dried Fig salad on page 98, salad #49 but I couldn't come up with one. Here's my best shot. Pear, Fig, Filbert, Beet, Watercress. In any event, it doesn't matter what you call it, it is delicious. Gabrielle says. "What you eat and how you move are 2 fields in which being mindful and present are vital", "I love that I help people do both!" We love that you help people do both as well. Thanks for 132 +. We'll never be without a recipe for a Cooked, Uncooked, Dairy, Vegan, salad, dressing or dip for any occasion for as long as we live!

This book is highly informative for how to make great tasting salads and dressings - with an almost endless variety of flavour-texture combinations. I first learned about 'super salads' from Gabrielle more than 5 years and although I had been a salad fan all of my fairly long life (so far), this new way of preparing salads was totally amazing to my tastebuds - initially I couldn't quite believe the difference that it made. I have been an advocate ever since - I was so pleased when she published a book on this topic. I would also recommend Gabrielle's Green Smoothie Magic as a great partner to this book.

Excellent primer.I love salads, but I need some help to get away from the lettuce/tomato/carrots/cheese rut.This book opened my eyes and imagination.Well written, well edited and a great setup.I love the way certain recipes are given with the salad "recipes," but then are recapped at the end.Written by a vegetarian/almost vegan, but it is not preachy. "Flesh" food is even mentioned a time or two.Will look for others by this author.I think this was an Amazon freebie for me.

Baker received his second Pulitzer Prize in 1983 for his autobiography, Growing Up (1983).In addition to his regular column and numerous books, Baker also edited the anthologies, The Norton Book of Light Verse (1986) and Russell Baker's Book of American Humor (1993). From 1993 to 2004 he was the regular host of the PBS television series Masterpiece Theatre. Baker was a regular contributor to national periodicals such as The New York Times Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Saturday Evening Post, and McCalls. One of his columns, “How to Hypnotize Yourself into Forgetting the Vietnam War,” was dramatized and filmed by Eli Wallach for PBS. Baker died in 2019 at the age of 93.

This may be the most enjoyable autobiography I have ever read. My husband was a little older than I was and often told stories from his depression era living so it was interesting to compare their stories during those difficult years. Bakers writing flows beautifully without confusion over the time periods. His writing is warm, honest almost to a fault, humorous, and detailed at the right time. As a syndicated columnist for the NY Times, I frequently read his articles in the Richmond Times Dispatch for many years. Loved the book so much, I bought 8 of them (all used except for one new audio book) for Christmas presents for friends and family. All the paperback books I bought were 6" x 9" and strongly recommend you get that size rather than the old time mass market paperback.

Eager to make a sale, I replied: "Ok, I promise!"I fully intended on keeping that promise, but autobiographies never really interested me (they still don't), unless the entire story is about what makes the author famous in the first place. In Baker's case, I wanted a book on what it's like to work for the Times - not what his childhood was like. Obviously, I concluded, a title like Growing Up suggests the latter, and so I put it off. I still don't like autobiographies, but that's no reason to give it a bad rating. For what it is - it is great. So, if you want to read about a boy's coming of age in rural America from the days of the Depression to the end of World War 2, you won't find a better book.I hope that some way, somehow, and in some dimension, the man on the phone who asked me 34 years ago to read Growing Up knows that I have - finally - made good on that promise.

I first read this Pulitzer Prize winner when my son was growing up. I would read a page outloud, and then he would read a page. A line from the book is, "Make something of yourself." When I told my son, with a wink, "Make something of yourself," he would laugh; and he did make something of himself. The story of Mr. Baker's life is one I will never forget, and the time that my son and I spent reading together was a special time, made even more so by this book. Of all of the books we read together, this was our favorite book.Now that my husband and I are retired, we are reading this book to each other. The other day I read to my husband the part of the book that talks about Mr. Baker's wife when he didn't know he was going to marry her. He thought that he would just be a playboy until he saw his future wife kissing another guy . . .More than a wonderful story about a wonderful man who made something of himself. Well written and well deserving of the Pulitzer Prize. This is a book that will be enjoyed 100 years from now. Today, Mr. Baker is in his eighties. He has left for us this gift of telling us about his life.

The book by Russell Baker is an excellent memoir.Framing 1925 - 1946.The book gives a very intimate detail of his growing up in the depression era and later on, and how his family dealt with the hardships.It shows Baker's character being formed by the love of his family. All in all a very enjoyable book and educational book.Baker received his second Pulitzer Prize for this book.

This is a homespun feel good story of an author remembering his youth and doing a fine job of it. The time is many moons gone by...the 30's and 40's and depicts the flavor of those days and of a domineering mother greatly respected by Russell;. Family is the star of this book and loving results the answer to a fulfilling life.

Everyone should own this book. It should be next to other staple books on the shelf.

Russell's story was engaging and told about a difficult childhood in a hard time. His characterizations were descriptive and helped tell the story. Much detail was included in many aspects whether it was describing a street, or the contents of a room, sometimes more than seemed necessary. You commiserated with the young Russell as he battled life, home, family, and his own demons. A very decent read!

Russell Baker tells the reader that he wrote a book about growing up and the publisher never responded to him. After reading it again he said he learned it was not good so wrote a new one, this. After reading this one one wonders how bad could the first one have been. I feel I know nothing about Russell Baker.
