The first anniversary of Prince’s passing has been an unsurprisingly busy time for publishers. At the end of February, there was Alex Hahn’s and Laura Tiebert’s authoritative biography on the artist’s first three decades, The Rise of Prince 1958-1988. Then, in the first week of April, we had Mayte Garcia’s touching, intimate memoir of her time with Prince, The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince. Finally, coming in just last week–ten days prior to the anniversary itself–was Ben Greenman’s Dig If You Will the Picture: Funk, Sex, God, & Genius in the Music of Prince. Greenman’s book is neither a conventional biography like Hahn’s and Tiebert’s, nor a personal narrative like Mayte’s–though it does contain elements of both of these approaches. In the canon of “Prince literature,” it most closely resembles two other books: Brian Morton’s 2007 Prince: A Thief in the Temple (later reprinted in the wake of Prince’s death last year), and Touré’s 2013 I Would Die 4 U: Why Prince Became an Icon.Like those earlier books, Dig If You Will attempts to present an overarching analysis of Prince’s body of work, the bulk of which occurs in a middle section of thematically-grouped chapters: “Sex,” “Self,” “Others,” “Virtue and Sin,” “Race and Politics.” But while Touré organized his analysis as a set of extended, interlinked essays–making it, for me, the most successful entry in this “genre” of Prince books–Greenman can’t seem to settle on an argument; he glosses over the surface of these major themes in Prince’s work, moving on to the next subject just when things are starting to get good. Perhaps, as Questlove suggests in the foreword (between this and Duane Tudahl’s recently-announced Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions, Quest has had a busy year of foreword-writing), Dig If You Will works best as a kind of frame, laying the groundwork for deeper dives in the future. But if you’re the kind of hardcore fan who would purchase an extended, quasi-scholarly analysis of Prince’s music, it’s sort of questionable that you would need such a frame in the first place.This is not to say that Dig If You Will isn’t an enjoyable read–it clearly is. Greenman’s writerly credentials are evident: he’s a novelist, a frequent contributor to The New Yorker, and has co-authored books with Questlove, Brian Wilson, and George Clinton. He is, I have little doubt, smarter than I am (he certainly knows more about the oeuvre of William Blake than I do). At its best, his book puts aspects of Prince’s music into fresh perspective. His chapter on the “Slave” era is perhaps the clearest explication I’ve read of that thorny period; and the section on Hungarian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihályi’s concept of “flow” offers a fascinating and plausible theory for both Prince’s near-supernatural focus and (implicitly) the coping strategies that led to his death. But Prince fans, as Greenman noted in a recent New Yorker essay, can be unforgiving; and, while dwelling on minor factual errors can be nitpicky, I suspect that there are a few such errors that the community will find unforgivable. Particularly unfortunate, in light of Mayte’s book, is the misidentification of Prince’s deceased son Amiir by the tabloid-proliferated moniker “Boy Gregory”: an avoidable mistake made actively tasteless by the accompanying misreading of the lyrics for “Anna Stesia.”In the aforementioned New Yorker essay, Greenman described Dig If You Will as both a “passion project” and an “opportunistic” one. Both of these descriptors are accurate. Greenman’s passion for and knowledge of Prince are obvious, and some of the most compelling passages are when he’s writing from a fan’s position: recalling his teenage record-shopping experiences in the 1980s, or providing a discography annotated with brief writeups on his favorite tracks, or describing a writing break in which he watches a flock of birds in the sky and waits for them to form, True Detective-like, into the artist’s “Love Symbol.” But the book’s “opportunism” makes it difficult to recommend: it feels rushed and padded, like it could have used a little more time in the oven or a more demanding editor, but was nevertheless pushed out the door to make that all-important mid-April deadline.For that reason, it’s for the best that the next major Prince book (Tudahl’s) isn’t scheduled for release until November. Greenman, like many of us, clearly had something to work out in the wake of Prince’s death, and I’m glad he did what he had to do; his contributions are appreciated and well worth checking out, especially in this week of sad memories and ghoulish speculations. But at this point, we need polished, rigorous books more than we need timely ones. There isn’t as much money in the former for the publishing industry, of course, but there’s a lot more potential benefit for Prince’s legacy.

Unlike other books about Prince, which are structured as biographies, or focus on a particular project like the spectacular Let's Go Crazy: Prince and the Making of Purple Rain, Dig If You Will The Picture is an overarching analysis of Prince's career, with the author Ben Greenman breaking much of Prince's life and career into thematically-grouped chapters. As a Prince super-fan, reading this book was akin to talking to another Prince super-fan while waiting at the merch table at a concert. Since the author didn't interview Prince or his collaborators for this book, all of the analysis presented in Dig If You Will are his personal opinions. So your enjoyment of this book is dependent on how much you agree or disagree with his take. Sometimes Mr. Greenman's musings veer off into self-indulgent ramblings ("We break time into segments so that it can be apprehended and if not overtaken, at least undertaken" - what does that even mean!?!?!) and some chapters feel like a literature major's thesis paper. But there's no denying that Greenman knows his stuff and is passionate about the subject. I particularly appreciated the analysis of Prince's later output, from the "Love Symbol" or O(+> era. Most of the serious writing about Prince's work focuses on Purple Rain or Sign O' The Times so its refreshing to get in depth critical writing on work like Emancipation or The Rainbow Children even if I didn't always agree with his take on them. And as a former contributor to Uptown Magazine, I was thrilled to read about the heartbreaking lawsuits between Prince and the fanzine he inspired. Unless you are looking for a traditional biography of Prince's life, I would recommend any hardcore Prince fan to give this book a read. It will certainly make you rethink some of your favorite songs, and revisit albums you haven't listened to in awhile after reading Greenman's thoughts on them.

This book focuses almost exclusively on Prince's music. I loved Prince so it was still an interesting read, but it wasn't quite what I expected. The author dove deep into different albums, songs, lyrics, beats/rhythms, etc. and was clearly a huge fan in his own right.

Greenman's book is a deeply intellectual and analytical look at Prince's impact on music, film, fashion, and culture. While there are biographical details strewn throughout, Greenman doesn't focus on the same old stories Prince fans have absorbed over the years. This is no dull chronicling of events. Instead, the author mines the more esoteric aspects of Prince's indelible influence on modern culture through the lens of his personal experience as a fan. Greenman references lofty authors and texts in seemingly tangential non-sequiturs but always relates them to either Prince's lyrics or the beguiling artist's perceived worldview. This tactic is not always successful, but Greenman's fandom is sincere and his analysis, whether you agree with it or not, shows substantive thought, craft, and care. Greenman's passion for all things Prince jumps off the page, but he's not immune to criticizing many of Prince's defiantly puzzling decisions and artistic missteps over the years. I related to this book more than any other book on Prince I've read, mainly because it was written as an obsessive fan.

Horrible. The author could not confirm information that was common knowledge. Things Prince had share publicly and in television and magazine interviews. He would make statements like "I heard he was put out by his father but I don't know the story". So reading this was difficult because I realized I knew more about Prince than he did. I felt like it was a book pieces together without any research involved. I read three chapters and decided it was be a waste.

CURTIS C. THOMAS served as pastor of several Baptist churches in the central Arkansas area before recently retiring after forty-four years in the ministry. Most recently, he served fourteen years as executive pastor of The Bible Church in Little Rock. He has coauthored two books: Romans: An Interpretive Outline and The Five Points of Calvinism: Defined, Defended, Documented. John MacArthur is the pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, where he has served since 1969. I am in the process of reading this book at present. Because of its rich devotional style, I am intentionally reading it slowly so as to thoroughly benefit from the grace3 and wisdom of the author's decades of ministry experience. I have already sent a volume to a young pastor new to the ministry.

THIS WAS A GIFT FOR MY SON AND HE REALLY LIKE THIS BOOK. IT WAS ONE OF THE BOOKS HE WANTED AND WAS VERY HAPPY THAT HE GOT IT.

This book was given to me as a gift for Christmas, from my father. Little did I realize how much I would like this book too. Even though I received the paperback, since I did not have a Kindle yet, I have highlighted a lot in the book, to reference later on.I began reading Practical Wisdom For Pastors on Saturday morning, June 26th during both of our flights from New York to Kansas. Sunday I did not read, but did finish the book over Monday and Tuesday and I think the total time it took to read 272 pages of this book was approximately 8 hours, which is probably the fastest I've ever read a book too.I hope that many seminarians will consider having this book in their library and one that will be easily accessible and referred to often. This book would especially be helpful for those seminarians that are preparing for an internship within a local church too.My only regret is that I didn't read this book sooner because I've been serving as a pastoral intern since January 2010. I'm glad I have it now and look forward to reading some of the other books that are recommended by the author.

This is a must for ministers starting out in ministry. It deals with a lot of subjects that you deal with in ministry. From preaching to counseling to how you dress, it deals with most things inexperienced pastors don't know about. Great book. Highly recommend.

I used this book as a resource when writing a term paper, and it was great! It is also a good resource for pastors, ministers and evangelist who are going into ministry.

I just want to thank the author. I have personally experienced pastor's insensitivities of one of Korean presbyterian congregation in Huntsville Alabama. He is the only one to be preaching and afraid someone who knows more than he does. Calling him brother is insult to him. Calling Plymouth Brethren church cult because he is threatened by his only pastorship unlike biblical model of plurality of elders (pastors). He is not listening to congregation although he is not well read. Listening to only his supporters to stay on the job. Most of the time pastors are imported outside and his desires and finishing seminary qualify for pastorship instead of congregation and other five things mention in the book. It's time to check psycological condition of pastors like we do check astronauts.

The problem with some car books is that they are little more than expanded sales brochures. This one is much more. It has interviews with the engineers and Ford executives involved in creating this car, the problems they faced, and the market conditions. This book makes clear the thinking and rationale that went into the decisions designing this car. The book gives a brief history of the Mustang line, but that is not its main purpose. I was glad to see that it spends many more pages on the development of the 2015 Mustang; I already have several books on the history of the Mustang. There are also plenty of images showing some of the design ideas along the way as the car slowly took shape, and there are many interesting accounts about this process, including the decisions to build a right hand drive model for foreign markets, whether or not to have the V-6 return, and developing independent rear suspension across the line as standard equipment. There is much, much more in this book, but I won't spoil those surprises.

Many times books like this are primarily a bunch of pretty pictures without much "meat" to the text of the book. This book is VERY unlike that. John Clor took the time not only to thoroughly investigate the 6th Generation Mustang, but also the 1st through 5th Generation Mustangs as well. It is a GREAT read, well worth it and really in-depth "insider" knowledge of Ford and Ford Performance.

A decade later, Harrington has updated those classic works for today's tournament scene and condensed the result into a single, all-new volume.Actually, Harrington on Modern Tournament Poker is more of a sequel than a revision: It's organized differently (more on that later), and it's dropped some of the early sections that made it approachable to true beginners. This is an intermediate book, one you'll get the most out of after playing a tournament or two and wondering, "What went wrong?"The original Harrington books were a gentle introduction in part because common techniques like bluffing and slow-playing were relegated to the second volume, so that the first could focus purely on making reasonable value bets. The new Harrington is broken down instead into the different phases of a hand: pre-flop, the flop, the turn, and the river. At first, this structure is a bit jarring, but it has the advantage that it allows you to look up any scenario you've experienced and find Harrington's answer. "Should I have called my opponent's bet on the turn?" "Should I have led out on the river?"A concluding section contrasts Harrington's prescribed style of play (tight but imaginative) with the now-ubiquitous LAG style, and offers some basic recommendations for playing against the LAG players you've identified at your table. Page-for-page, this may be the most valuable section of the book. If you own the previous Harrington classics (Vols 1-2& 3 of Harrington on Tournament Poker) this tome is certainly a must buy. As usual, the writing is crisp, concise and loaded with information and advice.As the title says, "Modern" tournament poker. Updates previous books with the emphasis on how the tournament poker games have changed, from small buy-in to mega buy ins, so much more aggressive and hand ranges much wider.Actually liked the writing here vs. pervious Harrington books, as it is easier to understand and more to the point, with excellent examples in every section.You won't read it in one, or even 10 sittings, but you will be a better player once you have re-read it a couple of times.Get a copy, your opponents will, and this will allow you to stay ahead of their curve.

Ten years ago, I read all three volumes of Harrington on Holdem a minimum of six times each. I took notes on them and studied them like text books. Even with very limited opportunities to play, they payed great dividends. I have now read and studied the new book extensively as well. I have to say that Harrington and Robertie have outdone themselves. This book has brought me out of the worst poker slump of my life! The only issue that I have is that a lot of the sample hands give the player 200 or so big blinds. I have never played in a tournament yet with a starting stack of more than 100 big blinds. (I obviously live in the wrong part of the country). Other than that, I feel that the nuances of the modern game are covered in great and very useful detail. The hand samples alone are worth ten times the investment in the book. Thank you Mr. Harrington, and I hope to meet you someday on the felt!

Dan Harrington has written several exceptional books on a tight-aggressive style of poker. In this book, Harrington updates his earlier work on how to be successful in 2014 and beyond. He addresses a wide array of topics including how to play different hands preflop, analyzing the flop, turn, and river. He also covers bet sizing, when to 3-bet and 4-bet, and how to deal with the new super-aggressive players.

At first I was taken back by the non-discounted price for an e-book but I really love this book. Other reviews stated how this book was just another Harrington on Holdem with some minor updates. I totally disagree. this book is written to make you think like a poker player playing in a tournament in 2015. The game keeps changing and this book will help you keep up with those changes. It really trains you how to think through the progression of questions you need be asking when playing in today's tournaments. I am only 75% done and already noticed my thinking process is better. I already had a good result a few days ago (32nd out of 600+ players) after a 11 month/20 tournament dry spell. I needed something to kick-start me back in the right direction and this book was it. I am going to read it at least three times before August to get mentally prepared for a $1650 buy-in that is coming. Thanks for another great book Dan!!

I've been reading books by Harrington & Robertie (individually and as co-authors) for many years. This is just what you would expect: essential thinking by a pair of classic game theorists/practitioners.

He talks about how styles have changed and what you can do to compete. Overall not a ton of new stuff but always a good read to think about situations from different perspectives and to reinforce good poker habits.

This book is not a tell it all book but does cover a major percentage of everyday playing situations in tournaments.The author has wisely broken down the poker tournament into stages to explain better now the same play differs at each stage.I highly recommend it for people who never read a poker book before.

One of the most well written personal stories I have ever read. I actually read it twice! I have long admired Katherine Graham and the way that she handled the challenges that faced her. The death of her husband and the decision to take over the Post and the growth of the company were all challenges that she faced and she did it, not believing that she was worthy of any of it. She was an amazing woman who lived a one in a million life. I love her and this book. It is a great read.

Wow! Personal History is exceptionally well-written and the voice is authentic. I'm grateful to Katharine Graham for giving us this window into her life. Many of us were a part of the history of the periods she covers and have an attachment to the Washington Post, nurtured by her family for all of those years. She had many advantages in life, but much was expected of her and much was given by her. When the times called for courage, there was Katharine Graham (now being played by Meryl Streep in the new movie *The Post*) being true to her calling as owner and publisher of a great paper, with fidelity to the truth and a commitment to the good of our country. The Washington Post is still a great, inevitably imperfect, source of news and salvation for our democratic republic and we can thank Graham, her family, and the other truth-tellers for that. In Katharine we have a woman who served honorably, with greatness, only when thrust into a leadership role she never coveted. I wish I had known her personally.

I got this book after I saw the movie, “The Post.” The narrative is surprisingly engaging—to be honest I could hardly put it down for the 3 days it took me to read it. What a courageous woman Kay Graham was! She has my utmost respect. I felt like I was going through her life with her. A beautifully organized book. The first few chapters on her parents and her early life were such an excellent introduction to her future life. She was able to grow and adapt to all the change in her life, but you understood the pain and worry she was going through. An unbelievably honest woman who lets you know all about the problems of trying to run a company and help it grow both from a journalistic viewpoint of absolute integrity and a corporate viewpoint of maintaining profitability. One of the best books I have read!

I'm in my 60s, so Katherine Graham was a name I was familiar with. After watching the movie The Post, I interested in learning about her. While I found some of the chapters very dry, it was fascinating to learn of her very upper class and rather odd childhood. How her wealthy family was shunned by other wealthy New York elite due to her father's Jewish heritage. Her complete acquiescence to her husband, her volatile mother and her own admission of not knowing any better than to leave the raising of her children to nannies. It was a look into a world very different from anything I've experienced.

A very candid account of her life, packed with details of a different time to more current day issues. Particularly interesting reflections on the role of women over time, and how this intelligent and capable woman came to find her own strength. Lots of name dropping which annoys petty old me, but really the people in her life are interesting in themselves-- and interesting how all those paths crossed from early days when they weren't well known names. It is the story of the elite, and the great privilege that comes with wealth both inherited and earned, this can be irritating. But also refreshing in that these powerful folks were altruistic and idealistic, and acted on those ideals even at personal cost.

Mrs. Graham led an extraordinary life. She was born into privilege and money and worked as a reporter, in an era in which she was raised to be a wife, mother, and runner of households. She became one of the most powerful women in industry by pursuing the knowledge she needed, as she needed it. Mrs. Graham tells her story primarily through the peak events of her personal and corporate life: the suicide of her husband, the Pentagon Papers, and a major labor strike. A wonderful read.

Katherine Graham's Autobiography is long and exhausting - she unsparingly discusses all aspects of her life. She culls information from diaries, letters she sent and received, memoranda, interviews and articles and then she chronicles her life from the earliest days to her retirement from the Washington Post. "I recognize the inherent danger of being self-serving and have tried to retain as much detachment as possible, but I wanted to tell what happened just as I saw it." :Born into the wealthy Jewish Meyer family, close to her father, educated at boarding school and the University of Chicago, she became an aspiring reporter in San Francisco covering a violent labor dispute. She married Phil Graham, whose "brains, ability, and charm were legendary among his people." Alas he suffered from severe depression and committed suicide just after returning to her after a nasty affair that threatened her beloved Washington Post. We learn about the Grahams' relationship with the Kennedy clan, President Johnson, Nixon, Ford and Reagan. Many episodes (The Pentagon Papers etc) are spell-binding and Katherine often bet the very survival of the company on her beliefs. Often, her actions are difficult to understand - yes, she was deferential to the males (her father, her husband), but it often became a convenient crutch, While Graham's prose is very easy to read, the book is difficult to digest - it took me several tries to finish.
